In the first year of implementation, Butler University has seen success by

leveraging the ClearScholar platform.

At Butler, the app is known as The Butler App and succeeded by an early focus

on strong adoption (app downloads). Once adoption goals were accomplished,

the utilization of the app has been driven by functional product features, an

overall strategic mobile-first IT approach and active app administrators creating

relevant content. With this combination of student adoption, utilization and

institutional support, The Butler App has revolutionized how Butler students

receive communications and has laid the groundwork for a deeper connection

between students and the institution.

ClearScholar Makes An Impact At Butler University

78%78% of target students downloaded the app

Driving app downloads was a collaborative effort between the Client

Services team at ClearScholar and Butler’s Marketing, Student Affairs

and Information Technology departments. By driving excitement of the

app through an exclusive pilot group of students during the fall semester

and having a waiting list of students interested in joining the pilot group,

there was a strong amount of word-of-mouth excitement created. Once

the app was released to the full student body, signs were posted at

key locations where the digital student ID component of the app could

be utilized. On top of these activities, emails were sent to students to

drive downloads. These emails often promoted a variety of contests and

use cases for how the app would help students in their everyday lives.

Additionally, a grassroots approach was leveraged to create additional

awareness of the app, including a presence at key campus events and

providing students with promotional items and a variety of giveaways to

create excitement.

advertise events, promote new services, as well as share immediate notifications to

our campus community. We have easily adapted and adopted the use of this new

70% of students utilize the app at least once per week

ClearScholar drives 8x’s more app sessions than the previous app. Utilization of

the app was a key component of early success metrics. Like many institutions,

Butler University had deployed a mobile app in the past. This app had low

utilization and few students regularly used the app, which ultimately limited

the ability for this tool to be effectively leveraged. The factors that have driven

student utilization are outlined below:

Administrator Activity

The ClearScholar platform effectively leveraged existing content and integrated

with several RSS feeds to ensure the platform was always rich with content.

Additionally, custom curated and created content by the administrators within

the ClearScholar platform has been a key to success for Butler.

Over 90% of administrators that were trained by the ClearScholar

Client Success team have posted custom content into the app.

On average, administrators were trained and ready to post content in

under 30 minutes.

On average, over 40 pieces of custom app-specific content were

created each month. This is in addition to thousands of additional news

and event content items that were pulled from existing RSS feeds.

Product Functionality

Having student-centric tools within the ClearScholar platform was an

intentional step in developing the product and gives students many

reasons to access the app. These functional tools lead to more views

of the personalized newsfeed which is where the platform’s ability to

leverage data science and personalization is fully realized.

Information Technology Vision

The ability for the Information Technology team to quickly adopt and

align to a vision of ClearScholar being a mobile onramp has allowed

their team to focus less on supporting and deploying multiple apps

and has positioned ClearScholar to be the mobile solution for

Butler University.

The Butler App provides access to a variety of campus

resources including:

Aramark (Dining): Students can see dining menus, dining

hours, dining balances and more.

Salesforce Service Cloud (IT Knowledge Base & Case

Creation): Students have the ability to quickly access a

mobile friendly IT knowledgebase, and if they are unable

to get their question answered quickly, they can submit a

case. There are plans to roll this out to support additional

departments (beyond IT) in Fall 2017.

A robust “More Tab” giving students access to a variety

of campus resources, including, but not limited to

their learning management system (Moodle), student

information system (Peoplesoft), and Tutoring Resources.
