‘But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
gentleness and self-control.’ (Galatians 5: 22-23) Dear All,
This verse from Paul’s letter to the Galatians is the bible
verse for the month of June. I think it is ever so beautiful
and rather encouraging for the work which lies ahead of
us before the summer. Patience, kindness, peace,
goodness and peacefulness – what wonderful promises
and reminders how we have to conduct our lives as
Christians!
On Saturday 21st June we will have our last Kids Kirk of
this session and will finish the day with a grill party
(barbeque). Everybody in our church family is invited
and we hope that many of the Chalmers’ faithful
members will join us and mix with the Kids Kirk
families. It will be a good opportunity to get to know
people better and to share what we as God’s
congregation in this place are all about.
Sunday 22nd June will be a special Cradle Roll Service
with Sunday School Prize giving. What will make this
service particularly special is that we will baptise Luke
Davidson and his sister Summer in this service. Luke is
eight years old and has been attending our children’s
club at Chalmers, and he came forward on his own
account and asked to be baptised.
There will be more baptisms in the weeks ahead and a
couple have been in touch and asked to join the church
on profession of faith (a date has not been fixed yet). I
am going to lead a new communicants’ class in
preparation for this. If you know of other people who
might be interested in joining the church or perhaps want
to become a member yourself, please don’t hesitate to
contact me.
There is still some preparation to be done for things that
will start in autumn (e.g. YKirk and the Bereavement
Support Group) and then I think we can look back to a
year full of blessings and enjoy the summer before we
will set out to do new things.
Let us praise the Lord for all the work He is doing in our
community and ask Him to teach us to live according to
His commandment: to show love, joy, peace,
forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness
and self-control, and not to lose faith in Him but to take
heart and work for His Kingdom.
God bless,
Rev Kristina Herbold Ross

As I write this we are in the midst of preparation for the final weekend of Kids Kirk for this session! And what a session
we have had!! Each month God has blessed the team of leaders with enthusiasm and energy to share the love of God
with increasing numbers of primary school children. The children have enjoyed taking part in games, crafts, singing,
listening to the stories about Jesus and his friends, and eating together at the feast time (which is very popular!!) All
wrapped up in 2 hours of fun and sharing, bringing the Good News of Jesus to some of the young people of our
community!
We are planning our final session which will include a Family Fun Day, 12.30 – 2.30pm, where we will recap all the
children have learned and experience some crafts that they have done throughout the session: and you are all invited
to join us!! Come and see what's been happening on a Saturday morning, come and meet the children and young
families and welcome them into our fellowship through the sharing of food, outside if the weather permits! Tickets £3
from the team, if you don't have one just come along and pay at the door! See you on the 21st!! Amanda Johnston
Kids Kirk contact details are - [email protected] or text on 07980 059 974
Our Easter Superbook Holiday Club in April was a fun filled day. We had 25 children, 8 leaders and 3 youth helpers.
The children enjoyed various activities throughout the day and learnt the story of Jesus death and resurrection. The
countdown is also on for the Summer Holiday Club, ‘Fit for a King’ – Monday 14th – Friday 18th July 10am – 12.30pm.
This has been especially written to coincide with the Commonwealth Games. In the coming weeks you will all be asked
to make a face, so we can decorate the Church Hall as a stadium, look out for Sheila or Amanda with a pile of paper
plates and felt pens! The club is open to all primary school children. There is a small fee of £3 per session, or £12 for all
5 mornings! Please contact Sheila if you would like to register a child/children at the Kids Kirk contact details above.
Chalmers Memorial Church Youth and Children’s Committee
YKirk: Some of the P7 children at Kids Kirk are disappointed to think that as from this summer they will no
longer be part of Kids Kirk and Holiday Club, both of which are for Primary School age children. The Youth and
Children’s Work Committee decided in February that we must build on the good relationships which we have with
the children and develop programmes for post Primary School young people. Some members of the Youth and
Children’s Work Committee agreed to consider the way ahead and in March a small action group was set up,
agreeing to be responsible for taking any necessary steps to develop this work. This small group of three people is
led by our minister Kristina with the support of youth worker Nicola Bruce and drawing on the experience and
ideas of Gillian Halcrow. The plan is to move towards the setting up of what is to be called “YKirk” for children
and young people from P7, S1 & S2. The action group in March set as their target to
have the first YKirk meeting on Friday 5th September from 4.00pm - 6.00 pm
have a monthly meeting thereafter. More details will follow regarding YKirk over the summer through the intimations and advertising, so watch this
space!
Sunday morning: The 10.15 am all age service continues to be a most significant half-hour of worship for many
of us, and it is encouraging to see how relaxed and at home are the children who attend as we share in hymns,
prayers, action, visuals and reflection. The numbers of children attending throughout Sunday morning continue to
vary greatly, but “busy bags” are now available when required for children at the 11.00 am service. The Sunday
Club continues with a varied pattern from week to week.
Kids Kirk and Holiday Club:
An article about Kids Kirk and the Easter Holiday Club are included above. It is important, however, to stress that
without the team of volunteers neither of these could happen. If you think you might be able to help please contact
either Sheila Bulloch or Amanda Johnston. John Knox
Thanks
Nanna Naples would like to thank the Church for the flowers she received while in hospital. Also for the cards and all the phone calls. It was much appreciated. She is now at home making good progress.
John Marshall would like to thank all the Guild Ladies who kindly gave him a donation towards his trip to Belarus. The money will be used in a project once he arrives, and he'll let everyone know what that was on his return!
Tonia Stewart would like to thank the church for the flowers and good wishes received at Easter.
Nessie Craig would like to thank the minister, friends and family for the hospital & home visits. Also for the flowers, cards, and food parcels following her recent accident. The prayers and kindness are much appreciated. Christian Aid - Forth Bridge Cross Sponsored Walk - Duncan & Helen Morgan, Jessie Hobbs, Pat Berry and Eleanor Willins would like to thank everyone who sponsored us. We raised £721 for Christian Aid. Thanks for your continuing support.
Thanks are expressed to all who donated to our Day of Commitment. We raised over £5,000. Well Done.
Prayers Give thanks to the Lord for He is good, His
love endures for ever. Psalm 118. Prayer of approach: Welcoming God, Your glory fills the world that you have made; your loving imagination is ever present. We offer you our praise and adoration. Merciful God, Your loving heals our broken world; your strength upholds the fragile. We offer you our praise and adoration. Faithful God, You call us; you welcome us; you renew us in your love. We offer you our praise and adoration. Prayers of intercession: We pray for our minister Kristina and all who have positions of responsibility in our church We pray for the children who come to Kids Kirk and for the leaders who give of their time and talents We pray for those who are finding life difficult and feel unloved. May we be there for them to help and encourage. We pray for all those who are suffering because of war and we remember the people of Syria and the school girls kidnapped in Nigeria. We pray for ourselves, that we might respond to Jesus as the Loving One and be ready to show this way of love to others in his name.
Amen
Our Church – an explanation of the Interior Decoration and Symbolism
We return to looking at our Church and its symbolism.
True unity in the Church will only be seen when the people of Christ can meet together around the Table of the Lord.
The Rood Screen at the back of the Communion Table bears symbolic striped cords of the whip with which Jesus was flogged.
The fishing boat high above the Communion Table bears no religious significance, but is a reminder of the old days of sail from which our community here takes its general character. It was the men, and their wives, who fished under sail who built this church with much personal sacrifice.
The distinctive feature of the Communion Table is that it is seven feet long and has seven legs symbolising the Seven Churches of The Book of Revelation – Chapters 2 & 3. (Photo –Harvest 2013)
The archway above the Table has more stencil work and moulding. You will see the Roman flogging post, and the ‘lictum’, the whip with which Christ would be flogged. Also the head of an animal representing sacrifices offered before Christ gave the one sacrifice to end all sacrifices.
Bereavement support Our plans for a bereavement support programme for the local community are well under way. A group of Chalmers
folk will be going through a training programme in the summer, and we hope to offer our first support programme in
November/December. We'll get the relevant publicity out as soon as possible. We'll keep you posted, but if anyone
needs more information at this stage, please be in touch. Tom Gordon
