An interesting route which takes us to the Oiz wind farm situated on the top of the mountain of that name, from where we can enjoy spectacular panoramic views of the area of Busturialdea. It is a demanding route with a great elevation gain which ascends the north side of mount Oiz. We recommend that special attention is paid on the descent from mount Oiz because of the steepness of the path, and that enough water is taken as there are no drinking water fountains on route.

We leave from the Mendata Reception Point [km 0] and gradually ascend the BI-3222 road to Urrutxua [km 5,00]. From here we take the crossroads to the left, crossing the BI-3231. After about 4 kilometres of ascent by road we come to a junction with a track which goes into the slopes of mount Oiz. We take this cement path to the right. Here we begin a hard climb which takes us to the top of the crest right next to the hermitage of San Kristobal [km 12,00]. We continue the ascent up to the top of the mount Oiz [km 14,15].

Having got to the top, the views of Urdaibai are unbeatable. It is worth having a break here to enjoy the lovely scenery around us.

On starting the descent great care must be taken due to the steepness of the path.

From the first bend on the way down, a post indicates the descent along a path which we have to cross going over a fence. Having crossed the path we come to the windmills situated on the other side of the peak (south-east). Here the path is wide and clear, allowing for a fast and uncomplicated descent. However, care should be taken in some places.

The descent takes us near to the Santamañe farmhouse [km 26,15] where we join the BI-4223 and which we follow as far as the junction with the BI-3222 road. Turning right, in about 4 kilometres we come once more to Urrutxua [km 30,00]. We go in the direction of Albiz [km 31,50] on the BI-3222 and return to the Mendata Reception Point [km 35,27].
