There’s no doubt about it – summer is definitely a busy time in Northbrook and this year is no exception. The great weather brings everyone out for summer festivals, fairs and community events. There are wonderful music concerts, popular

art fairs, numerous outdoor recreational opportunities and perennial favorites including sidewalk sales. As part of its mission, the Chamber partners with the Village to spread the word about all of these events and activities. Through our community guide, newsletter and Live Shop Dine program, we play an important role in celebrating all that our great community has to offer. I encourage you to check out some of the summer events and activities listed in this newsletter and in our other publications, and take advantage of all that is offered right in our own backyard. Another great pastime is enjoying the

exceptional and diverse restaurants here in Northbrook. At every shopping destination in the Village, you will find no shortage of places to enjoy either a quick bite to eat or a fine dining experience. These restaurants have invested in our community and pay property taxes that support many wonderful amenities. I was glad to have an opportunity to speak up for these important businesses during the recent deliberations on food trucks. With input from all interested parties, I was pleased that we were able to forge a compromise that will make sure that mobile food trucks will have the opportunity to fairly compete with brick and mortar restaurants. We’re very excited this year to add a third Chamber for the upcoming Business Expo. This new partnership with the Glenview Chamber will bring additional energy to an already very successful event. Not only will you see some new exhibitors this year, but the wider circle of attendees will allow you to broaden your networking opportunities. So if you are a long-time attendee, or have never attended in the past, please mark your calendar and come out and join us for a terrific night!

Groundbreaking Planned for 770 Skokie ProjectAfter nearly two of years deliberations, numerous public hearings, planning meetings with the Village and community input, developers of the mixed use project at the intersection of Skokie and Dundee, expect to break ground this month. 770 North Shore, which many consider to be the gateway into Northbrook, will include 100,000 square feet of commercial space, anchored by a Mariano’s grocery store, and an 8 and 9 story, 347 unit upscale apartment building. According to Morningside Crossroads Development VP Brian Pawlik, once the closing on the property is complete, the project will begin to mobilize, starting with fencing along the perimeter and grading of the site. Contractors will dig a pond to install a wastewater detention vault in the center of the property, as part of the required stormwater detention work. Once that is complete, the project will move forward rapidly, he notes. The next phase will be to dig basements for the residential foundations. Construction on the two level parking garage will begin for the residences as well. The most dramatic part of the project will

be the construction of the 71,000 square foot Mariano’s grocery store, which is expected to open in the fall of 2015. All of the permits and approvals are in place, according to Pawlik except for the separate zoning requirements for the Panera Bread and PNC Bank. The Architectural Control Commission and the Plan Commission will look at the elevations and confirm that they fit in with the development. At a recent board meeting, Trustees approved a final design of the sign that will simply say “Northbrook.” The Village’s Architectural Control Commission approved the gateway feature which is a wall constructed of Hardie board, that will maintain a wood-grain appearance, with white lettering. The sign will be surrounded by vegetation. The $4.9 million TIF funds will be used to pay for infrastructure, site improvements and for relocating Zengeler Cleaners to the site, according to Pawlik. More information about the project can be found on www.northshore770.com.

at least 500 feet from the property line on which any public event takes place. Special events include fairs, carnivals, festivals or civic events that have received a special permit from the Village. Little Louie’s Red Hots owner Pete Weiss commented that he felt the new rules are fair and balanced. “I’m not anti-food trucks, I am just anti- trucks parked in front of my store,” he says. Weiss plans to operate his own food truck “Louie B. Fresh” this summer, mostly at summer farmers markets and other area festivals and fairs. Village Trustee Todd Heller commented that the food trucks could provide synergies in the vicinity of existing restaurants, with someone purchasing food from a food

truck who might also then head to a nearby restaurant for a different food item. He and other Trustees agreed that the rules will be re-evaluated next year to see if there needs to be any adjustment. For more information visit www.northbrook.il.us/foodtrucks.

Village Publishes Guide for Opening A RestaurantTo aid business owners interested in locating a restaurant in Northbrook, the Village Development & Planning Services Department recently published a Guide to Opening a Restaurant in Northbrook. The guide provides information on zoning, business licensing, permits, site design and other elements specific to food establishments. The guide was put together following feedback from the Village’s Industrial and Commercial Development Committee. It also includes helpful information for current restaurant owners. The guide is a companion piece to “Guide to Operating a Business in Northbrook.” To download either guide, visit www.northbrook.il.us

Members Encouraged to Take Advantage of Website Tools Members are reminded that they have access to many valuable resources and benefits on the “Members Only” section of the Chamber website. Several improvements have been made to help members navigate the site and take advantage of a number of new options. If you see a message asking you to upgrade your Login, click “yes” and you will have access to the new interface. Once logged into the site, a user- friendly interface provides easy navigation for finding information on fellow Chamber members, for posting a Hot Deal, and for registering for events. Members also have the ability to view and update their business information, see statistics about who has viewed their page, search for other Hot Deals, promote their social media sites, and upload photos.

Member Only Page Each employee in the organization now has the ability to have his or her own login name and password to access the site. If you do not already have one, e-mail the Chamber at [email protected] and a link will be sent to you to set one up. Once you are logged in, the new dashboard displays large visual buttons for each function. Under Account Settings you can manage your personal and company information, with the ability to add photos

and update your records. The Members Only page also offers a great way to obtain contact information for someone you met at an event or some you would like to meet. Click on “Directory” and enter a keyword or the name of the company. Once you select the business from the list, a list of all contacts at the business with their full name, title, phone number and e-mails will appear on a drop down list. It’s easier than ever to create a Hot Deal through the member portal. Click on the “Hot Deals” button to view a quick summary of all current Hot Deals, both by category and by alphabetical listing. Click on the “Add a Hot Deal” button to submit your own special offer or promotion. You can even post an image or picture to appear with your offer. Click on “Manage Hot Deals” if you would like to edit any current offer. Remember that Hot Deals are submitted to the Chamber for approval before they are posted.

Easy Event Registration The Members Only page offers a great way to register for Chamber events and programs. Click the “Events” tab at the top of the screen and a full list of upcoming events will appear along with a description

and any fees. There is also a tab to view events you are already registered for, and events that you attended. Check out the “Upcoming Events” Tab that appears prominently on the home page and scroll through until you find the event you would like to attend. Click on the “Register Now” button and you can register either with your e-mail address or your password. When your registration is complete, you will receive an e-mail, or you can print out a confirmation page. As always, the Chamber staff will be happy to walk you through how to take advantage of the Members Only section or help explain any member benefit.
