Investing in the future of local business
Our themes of supporting apprenticeships and employability have meant that some really positive work has been achieved this year.
Friday 19 July saw the launch of the Get East Hants Working initiative at Alton House Hotel. Grants for employers taking on an apprentice and an guide to employing an apprentice are now available. This local scheme complements the encouragement that the government is giving to apprenticeships. (More on page 5.)
Business EastHants supported the employability fairs held around East Hampshire.
The businesses in East Hampshire have had some high profile
events and nominations – from ADP Security Systems being a finalist in the Security Excellence Awards to Linda Barker launching Elstead Lighting’s wonderful new showroom and Wettone Matthews’ Director being Accountant of the Year.
The support offered in our area is instrumental in allowing these businesses to thrive. Such support was seen in the hampshire4business show at Old Thorns Manor Hotel, where local businesses were encouraged to view the exhibitions, network and attend seminars. Many local businesses were recognised at the East Hampshire Business Awards in the evening.
A sign of a thriving local economy is that vacant units are being successfully let; the last unit on Riverside Industrial Estate in Alton was sold and Petersfield has obtained permission for a new business park.
I would also like to thank East Hampshire District Council for their continued dedication to supporting local businesses, apprenticeships and Business East Hants, and producing this newsletter.

A future that works
Apprenticeships provide the best of all worlds, according to the young people benefiting from a new East Hampshire District Council (EHDC) drive.
The council has set aside £170,000 to help hook up talented and committed young people with local companies. The money will be used to top up wages and cover apprentices’ travel and training costs.
The scheme, called Get East Hants Working, is run by EHDC
in partnership with Business East Hants and was launched in the summer with East Hampshire MP, Damian Hinds who called the scheme “a very creative, innovative, practical way to help businesses and young people”.
Cllr Ferris Cowper, Leader of EHDC, said: “The best deal you can strike is the mutually beneficial deal – and this scheme benefits young people, who get the chance to show what they can do, and employers, who
get someone they can mould and train with the skills they need for their business.”
Currently, the nationally accepted wage for an apprentice is just £2.65 an hour. But the East Hants scheme will boost this by up to £7,000 a year for two years.

East Hampshire’s best business brains to help boost local economyThe best business brains in the district are being invited to come together to advise East Hampshire District Council on its future strategy.
A new board of business experts is being formed to help the council create a better future for the district and EHDC is encouraging successful business people and entrepreneurs to sign up.
Cllr Nick Drew, chairman of the body, called the Non Executive Board, said: “East Hampshire has real opportunities to grow and develop its economy, employment and business. The council is committed to supporting this.
“The board has been created to provide the council’s Cabinet with
the best advice from people with a wealth of East Hants business knowledge and community experience.”
Board members will be asked to advise the council on strategy and policy matters to provide a brighter economic future for residents, businesses and visitors.
Candidates applying for the position must be able to show what they will bring to the role and demonstrate their connection with East Hampshire.

Local design company launch fabric collection at Kensington PalaceHorndean-based textile design company, Blendworth Fabrics, are well known for their elegant printed and woven fabrics that marry classic British design with beautiful modern textiles.
The company, established in 1921, recently headed to London to exhibit at Decorex International, a luxury interior design event held at Kensington Palace, where they launched their latest collection ‘Holland Park’.
Taking its influence from the old Victorian townhouses found in its namesake London district, ‘Holland Park’ is an eclectic mix of damasks, stripes, paisleys, geometrics and robust chenilles. Fabrics are coloured in a timeless palette of rich red and golds to willow green, cornflower blue and a wealth of versatile browns, greys and neutrals.
With Blendworth customers ranging from curtain makers and upholsterers to large retail outlets and interior designers, the new fabrics have been produced
on sophisticated dual-purpose qualities; robust enough for use on furniture, yet flaunting a supple handle for dramatic drapery.
‘Holland Park’ is the fourth collection to come from the Blendworth studio since their recent re-branding and the company could not be happier with the response. Traders and press flooded the stand for the duration of the show with ‘Holland Park’ making a very positive impression.
Along with a host of new customers and followers on the brands social media platforms, the company have already seen fabrics from the new range being featured in a number of top interior publications.

Local firm ADP is finalist in security ‘Oscars’ADP Security Systems, Bedford Road, Petersfield was selected as a finalist in the Customer Care Initiative of the Year category in the Security Excellence Awards 2013. This prestigious national awards ceremony, recognised as the ‘Oscars’ of the security business sector, was held at the Hilton Hotel, Park Lane, London, on 23rd October 2013.
Every October over 1,000 of the security profession’s foremost practitioners gather to recognise and honour the achievements of their peers in the security industry. Now in their fifteenth year, the Security Excellence Awards have
consistently broken new ground in highlighting the very best people, projects and processes the UK’s security sector has to offer.
This year saw a record number of entries, reviewed by a judging panel of representatives from all areas of security, the world of academia and the policing sector.
David Preston, director of ADP Security Systems said: “We were thrilled to be a Finalist in Customer Care at a national level, as this has always been a priority for our company. Our security officers and office team go the extra mile for clients on a daily basis and we hope
the judges agree.”
Alan Day and David Preston from Petersfield started their company in 1996 with a brand design from the Paul Martin Design Company and a tag-line ‘the future of security’. The company has gone from strength to strength, now securing many properties and handling remote CCTV monitoring for clients in the south-east and northern England. ADP currently employs 60 people.

Television presenter and interior designer Linda Barker launches Elstead Lighting’s new showroom Elstead Lighting was delighted to
welcome Linda Barker to officially
launch their new showroom in
September, marking the culmination
of 3 years of work and investment
for Elstead Lighting.
The new showroom is a key part of
a £2 million investment programme
into the business and showcases
almost the entire lighting range
Elstead sells into the marketplace.
As well as this 9,000 square foot
showroom, the company has
invested in adding more talent to its
already great team of staff, including
four young trainees / apprentices,
along with additional manufacturing
capability at its Alton-based facility.
The showroom has around 1,000
interior fittings on permanent display
from Elstead’s UK manufactured
ranges, over 150 table lamps from
the Lui’s Collection, Harlequin and
Flambeau ranges as well as Hinkley,
Feiss and Quoizel fixtures. There are
also 500 outdoor fittings, including
Elstead’s traditional English and
American-style lanterns, Garden
Zone landscaping products, plus
more contemporary styles from
Lutec and Norlys exterior brands.
In addition, Elstead has also recently
established a European Office,
based in Krakow, Poland, employing
10 staff to help expand export sales.
All of this infrastructure will allow
Elstead to realise its plan of tripling
its business over the next five years.
The company is continuing
to expand the manufacturing
undertaken in Alton, where currently
60 staff are employed and this is
expected to grow to 85.
Elstead Lighting now sells in more
than 25 countries around the world
and exports are targeted to become
a major activity of the company.

Wettone Matthews Director wins Accountant of the Year Award 2013Hampshire-based Wettone Matthews Accountants celebrated a prestigious accountancy award won by one of their directors, Paul Susans, who picked up the International Association of Book-keepers’ ‘Accountant of the Year Award’.
Paul Susans’ father and grandfather were both accountants and his passion for the profession is very much ‘in the blood’, with his career in accountancy covering four decades.
Wettone Matthews Director Wendy Croucher commented:
“We are all delighted that Paul has won this important award and he really deserves this recognition. He has a reputation for going the extra mile for his clients, helping and supporting them by putting tailor-made systems in place for them that
really enable them to work in the most efficient way. His clients know that they can rely on him to look after their needs and that they can talk things through with Paul.”
Paul was shocked but very pleasantly surprised at receiving the award. He was nominated by one of Wettone Matthews’ clients for the hard work and assistance he has given over many years.
Working at Wettone Matthews since 1985, and becoming a director in 2009, Paul has been in accountancy since leaving school in 1973.
Wettone Matthews is based in Paul’s home town of Alton and has been a thriving accountancy practice for half a century, helping a broad range of mainly Hampshire-based businesses with all their accountancy needs. Paul has three grown-up children and is actively
involved in the local community as a church treasurer, governor of a local school, Vice Chairman of the East Hampshire CAB and actively helps various charities.

Kitchen experts extend businessBeau-Port Kitchens and Interiors has been busy making changes to their huge showroom at Bentworth, near Alton, and has recently been appointed as the local AGA showroom for the area, installing the very latest Total Control signature colour AGA in ‘Heather’ within their latest demonstration Shaker style kitchen.

Hampshire4business Show a great successThe Hampshire 4 Business event brought together the best the county has to offer, helping businesses make new contacts, meet suppliers, grow their business and build a stronger business community.
The event show cased the most dynamic and ambitious businesses in East Hampshire and provided a one-stop-shop for business needs. Over 39 exhibitors and 200 delegates attended the event.
The successful business event, comprising an exhibition and series of seminars, also provided vital information for local business growth. Councillor Ferris Cowper, the Leader of East Hampshire
District Council, provided the opening speech and talked about Business East Hants, apprenticeships grants and the council’s support for business. The Apprentice’s Ruth Badger shared some of the secrets of her success.
The event was organised by SO Marketing in association with Business East Hants, East Hampshire District Council, Hampshire Chamber of Commerce, Hampshire County Council, Old Thorns Manor Hotel, Southpoint Films, Petersfield / Bordon Post and Chris Pearsall Photography.

Food Fiend Experience celebrates first anniversary – great progress made by local company It has been an interesting and eventful year for Food Fiend Experience, securing a place as a finalist in the 2013 Hampshire Life Food and Drinks Awards as best newcomer. Kathy Fitchett, founder and Chef of the cookery school which offers group experiences in international cuisine, is delighted with this endorsement.
Kathy has succeeded in gaining sponsorship by Kenwood, who have supplied a range of practical, contemporary equipment, used during her hands-on cooking courses which are continuing to create much interest.
On 1 July, Kathy hosted her first networking and food event - which sold out - supporting the Food Fiend premise that networking and good food in convivial surroundings is a winning formula. Kathy is adding a new twist to business networking - launching Networking Supper Clubs - with the inaugural gala event taking place on 13 December.

East Hampshire Business Awards 2013Businesses, council representatives and the Member of Parliament for East Hampshire joined in celebrating local business success at the East Hampshire Business Awards dinner. Winners in each category received Awards in recognition of their business success.
The awards also celebrated the role of businesses in supporting the community and local economy of East Hampshire. The awards were presented at a prestige dinner, held on 17 October 2013 at the Old Thorns Manor Hotel in Liphook, and was attended by over 140 delegates.
The black tie event was organised by SO Marketing and sponsored by the Petersfield/Bordon Post, East Hampshire District Council, Syn-Star and Antrobus Chartered Accountants.

Disability discriminationA major issue for employers and employees alike is what to do around ill health and work. With the population ageing and continuing to work, this is likely to become a hotter and hotter topic. Of course, not everyone who is off sick or ill is disabled. The law sets down a stringent test to meet in the Equality Act 2010. The issue for employers is how to manage disability in the workplace so as to ensure the workforce is as healthy as it can be and as happy as it can be. That will only make the workplace a better environment for all concerned and an easier one for business owners and managers to operate it.
Karen Jackson is an employment solicitor specialising in disability discrimination. She runs her practice
from Petersfield with a satellite office in London. Karen is a recognised expert in her field and has had her book on the subject published by the Law Society in May 2013. The aim of the book is to provide all the law in one place but also to make it accessible to non-lawyers. The book is written in a clear colloquial style and is designed to assist employees, employer-owners, HR reps, occupational health advisers, in fact anyone who needs to know how to manage disability and ill health at work. Setting goals and being successfulWe all know the importance of setting goals. At some point most of us have probably spent considerable time and effort focusing on what we want to achieve in our careers, business and personal lives. We have probably set some good goals that motivated us at the time but it did not last.
Goal setting is a discipline. Done well it becomes the differentiator between success and failure. Put simply – what gets measured gets done!
It is that time of year when businesses need to start thinking about 2014. The goal setting process can be a powerful exercise for unlocking creativity, renewing purpose, getting focus and finding new energy.
One approach that works well is to build a scorecard for your career / business. Divided into four areas it helps bring a balanced approach to the four key areas of any business - your people, your systems and processes, your customers and your money. It is often referred to as the Balanced Scorecard because it gives equal attention to the four areas. The logic is that if you get your people right and you have robust systems and processes you will look after customers well and income and profit will be the result.

Sit up and pay attention.Understanding costs is an essential aspect of managing any business – have you got control of your essential service costs?
Utilities are essential and the cost can be considerable, but many business owners get themselves into hot water because they fail to pay attention.
The supply of utilities is generally arranged over the phone. Imagine the scenario - the phone rings, interrupting you in some important task and the ‘seller’ quickly tells you they are from ‘X’ company offering you a great deal on energy or telephony. They rapidly read the ‘boring’ script to cover the complex legal aspects, but you are not really listening and before you know it you have agreed to take their services. ‘Job done’ you think returning to the task in hand. recording confirming your agreement to a 1, 2 or more years, contract!
Time goes by and your contract renewal letter arrives, advising you that your energy contract comes to an end in 4 months. Great you think, putting the letter aside because you have plenty of time to deal with it later. Before you know it, you have missed the 90 day termination deadline, which you didn’t notice in the letter, and your contract has been rolled over. Surprisingly, your services are now more expensive!

There’s no place like home for working Home businesses account for more than half the total number of UK small businesses, with over 400,000* across the South East. A local tax expert is urging Hampshire home workers to ensure they play by the rules to make the most of tax benefits and avoid hefty penalties.
The figures, according to new Office of National Statistics analysis from Direct Line for Business, show that the current 2.5 million home business owners now account for 52% of the total number of UK small businesses and cover a wide variety of business sectors.
Doug Clanchy who runs TaxAssist Accountants in Liss said: “Working from home can be very effective for many small owner-managed businesses, saving on premises and transport costs. With better wireless internet connections and the use of smartphones and tablets, it is becoming an increasingly attractive option for entrepreneurs.
“But there, are of course, tax implications and Hampshire home business owners need to ensure they’re claiming what they’re entitled to whilst playing by HMRC’s rules.”
Doug Clanchy said that home business owners should consider:
• Businessuseofyourgasandelectricity should be allowable- and you may even be able to make a claim if your use is only minor (for say, writing up your books).
• Althoughclothingisclassedaspart of your everyday wardrobe and is not tax deductible, if the clothing is necessary protective clothing or a uniform bearing clearly identifiable logos, it could be tax deductible.
• Youcanclaimthecostofbusiness calls on your home telephone and a reasonable proportion of line rental, in addition to expenditure on internet connections.
• Don’tallocateanareaofyourhouse solely for business use. Doing this could jeopardise your valuable Private Residence Relief (PRR) for Capital Gains Purposes. It can also make your home vulnerable to paying business rates rather than just domestic rates.

Buckmore Park, Winchester Road approvedPetersfield has recently received a major economic boost after Southdowns National Park Authority and East Hampshire District Council approved plans for a multi-million pound business park.
The council’s Planning Committee unanimously approved the outline plans for the business park, which will create up to 300 new jobs.
The scheme has been promoted by the Winchester-based Gentian Development Group and will see 5,500 square metres of commercial property space created on land at Buckmore Farm, north of Winchester Road.
The final architectural details of the scheme will be determined in due course, but the development will likely include a mixture of attractive office and other business uses.
Outline planning permission was granted in August 2013 for a business and trade park totalling 47,000 sq.ft.
Pre-let trade counter units should be available in 2014.

Successful First Aid session for summer youth club at Alton Community CentreAlton Community Centre offered a range of interesting and useful sessions during the summer holiday, including a First Aid taster session from training4healthcare.
As a local health care and first aid training provider, training4healthcare likes to ensure that training needs of the whole community are met, particularly when it comes to First Aid – an essential life skill.
Having been awarded European funding in 2012 to increase provision of first aid training, Karen Murrell of training4healthcare seized the opportunity to support the holiday youth scheme at the Alton Community Centre.
Youngsters of all ages had a fun and interactive session, learning how
to perform CPR, place a casualty into the recovery position, assist a choking casualty and deal with a range of other emergencies.
Once older members of the group had mastered and demonstrated the skills, they were encouraged to support the younger members to reinforce their confidence and encourage a sense of responsibility.
The session was positively evaluated by all those who took part.

‘Run to the Beat’ Half Marathon 2013Local lady goes the extra 13.1 miles to support children in Africa.
A massive 19,000 runners took to the streets of London for this year’s Run to the Beat half-marathon powered by Nike+. Amongst them, Custom Audio Design’s very own widely-talented Sales & Marketing Project Co-ordinator Anne James running in support of AfriKids.
AfriKids is a child rights organisation working in northern Ghana to alleviate child suffering and poverty.

Local businessman seeks adventure to aid local charitiesLocal businessman Michael
Henderson has always nursed the
ambition of sailing the Atlantic.
Therefore, in 2014, as he turns 60,
he will realise this ambition; not
only by crossing the Atlantic, but
also sailing all the way from San
Francisco, via New York, back to the
UK.
He has undertaken to do the last
two legs of the Clipper Ventures
“Round the World Challenge”, the
longest and toughest yacht race in
the world open to amateur sailors,
which set off from London on 1st
September.
A family man, and father of three
boys - now all in their twenties - he
has enjoyed sailing in a variety of
boats, starting off as a teenager
in dinghies and then transferring
to yachts. He now shares a 32ft
Dufour with his brother-in-law.
Michael is Chairman and Managing
Director of Englemann and
Buckham Ltd in Alton, a very long
established company supplying
capital equipment to the packaging
industry.
Despite his sailing experience, the
Clipper Race will throw up its own
challenges, not least sharing very
spartan living conditions with 20
other crew members, for weeks at
a time - it will prove a mental and
physical test for all of them. Each of
the crew is expected to participate
fully in all aspects of boat life, and
cooking for the crew may prove
Michael’s biggest hurdle. As he
points out, “I am no cook; and trying
to prepare dinner for 21 in a space
the size of an office desk heeled at
45 degrees is no easy task!”
By undertaking the adventure,
Michael hopes to raise funds for two
charities, Home-Start WeyWater
and MacMillan Cancer Support,
both of which are dear to his heart.
He would like people to donate
to either Home-Start WeyWater,
which is a local charity covering
the Alton, Bordon and Liphook
areas, supporting families who
need friendship and support. His
wife, Sally, has worked there for the
past six years and was previously a
volunteer for them.
He also wants to raise funds for the
cancer relief charity, MacMillan, as
he has lost close family members to
this awful disease, and knows what
valuable work they do.

Annual Farm Walk 2013
The Farm Walk took place on a beautiful evening on 13 June 2013. District Councillors and officers were able to visit Hall Farm, Bentworth near Alton courtesy of Julian Lewis and Shalden Farms (Peter Andrea and Andrew Shirvell).
Hall Farm is predominantly arable, with a few sheep. The visit also took in some diversification at Shalden Farms where they successfully converted redundant farm buildings to thriving commercial units for a number of small businesses.
A tractor and trailer ride through lovely countryside was followed by refreshments (all British/local produce) and a political overview given by the Hampshire & Surrey NFU Policy Advisor, Sandra Nichols.
Over 80% of East Hampshire is farmland/countryside so the farm visit is very helpful for District Councillors and Council staff to see what goes on in the countryside, demonstrating the importance of agriculture and horticulture to the area.
Every year Alton and Petersfield NFU branch with the support of the Economic Development at EHDC ensures that local decision-makers are updated regularly on issues affecting the farming industry.

Wheels to WorkIs your business in a rural location?

The scheme is funded by East Hampshire District Council and Hampshire County Council in order to benefit those living in the District by increasing the employment opportunities available to them, especially in rural areas.

TapBakResearch by Tourism South East* has found that 66% of consumers have searched for reviews by other travellers when looking for paid accommodation. 88% of consumers surveyed say that reviews are either ‘important’ or ‘very important’ to their decision.
Searching for reviews is now a routine part of planning a trip for many consumers, with 31% reading reviews every time they plan a trip and 27% reading reviews very often.
Tourism South East have developed a new service in Hampshire called TapBak that uses customer reviews and feedback to develop and promote businesses.
TapBak lets you hear from your customers first, using the technology that they are using. This gives you the opportunity to resolve problems, hear about what works and delight customers. Once you have been able to act on customer feedback, you can invite reviews from customers that will build your online reputation.
TapBak invites feedback from customers on smartphones while
they are on site and by email immediately after their visit. Feedback is sent to the business in real time in an easily manageable way so that they can act on it quickly.
TapBak helps businesses to give their customers an experience they will want to share with other travellers and makes it easy for customers to do so.

Is it too early to talk about Christmas? Most people shudder when they see the decorations in shops and chocolate Santas appear on supermarket shelves in October, so the answer is probably yes. There is at least one exception – planning Christmas celebrations.
As Jonathan Waugh, Director in charge of sales and marketing for the local Hollybourne Hotels chain says, ‘Christmas brochures go out as early as May! Mainly due to
customer demand and by October we would expect to have booked up 75% of the more popular dates’.
In more challenging economic times it is assumed that company Christmas parties and festive family gatherings at hotels and restaurants would have been cut back, however Jonathan reports a shift rather than decline, he explains: ‘Where companies and larger organisations cut back, individuals within these organisations and departments take it upon themselves to have parties with each person paying their own way with a company contribution. There has been a strong increase in demand for family gatherings at our hotels over the festive period. Overall December celebrations in 2012 were up by 20% on 2011’.
Hollybourne Hotels have introduced two ways to assist with current times, offering celebrations from just £14.95 per person and to secure a date with a £1 per person preliminary deposit.
