Why MBSE: general requirements• In short MBSE is:

–Systems Engineering

–Model-based (taking benefit from digitalization

and high performance computation capability)

• Business objectives on the use of MBSE are:

–End-to-end overall optimum to reach global optimization of the development, manufacturing and

support in operation of product & services

– Interoperability to connect heterogeneous models with different levels of detail / fidelity

–Dedicated views of the shared system of interest for different stakeholders objectives and expertize

including extended enterprise (given the increasing complexity of the product, production, operation

and maintenance)

–Reuse capability for agility and continuous improvement

–Collaborative development by formal interpretability and context of the studies, with

process/activities and decision management across entities

Why MBSE: importance for Airbus

• Airbus strategy: exploit digitalization to enhance products, services and operations, as well as pursue

new business models

• Airbus end-to-end Digital Transformation Program "Digital Design Manufacturing and Services" (DDMS)

–Global transformation that will change the architecture of:

– products, industrial systems and support & services systems,

– processes and information system,

– core competences

– Integrated platform across all Functions to define, deploy and support demonstrations and

applications that enable the next generation of product and industrial platforms

–Leverage the state of the art digital technologies

Product lines / out-of-cycle

Co-design and process integration

Modelling & simulations

Tool chain & digital continuity

Transformation & Competences

Collaboration across Functions, with our Supply Chain and with our Customers

Interoperability: needs to support MBSE

5

Interoperability based on standards

Point of view

• From local to global trade-offs

(across domains, tools and level of

details) to increase customer value

• Enhanced processes, methods and

standards for MBSE collaboration

within extended enterprise

• End-to-end consistency allowing

right-first-time (no iterations) with

different points of view (« filters »)

Model & simulate the overall system behaviors & performance to enable trade-offs

Interoperability: family of use cases

• Family of use cases to support MBSE interoperability:

– integration between heterogeneous authoring

applications (upstream, downstream, ...)

–communication with the extended enterprise or with

the customers,

–visualization,

– long term archiving and retrieval,

–data quality,

–analytics,

–migration,

–…

Need for industry involvement to develop standards implemented by MBSE vendors(example: lack of exchange of SysML models diagrams graphical presentation)

MBSE standards: recommended by Airbus

7

Airbus involved in OMG SysML V2, AP243 MoSSEC and EN9300-5xx LOTAR MBSE

• System modelling interoperability:

–SysML “System Modeling Language”

–STEP AP233 “Systems Engineering data

representation”

–ReqIF “Requirement Interchange Format”

–UAF “Unified Architecture Framework”

• System simulation interoperability:

–FMI “Functional Mock-up Interface”

• Collaboration interoperability:

–AP243 MoSSEC “Modelling and Simulation information in a collaborative Systems Engineering Context”

MBSE standards: importance of UAF

(Unified Architecture Framework)

8

To address the different stakeholders points of view in a standardized way

• UAF is the next step in standardized system of systems architectures

–approved metamodel for the NATO Architecture Framework (NAF) 4.0

– implemented as a UML profile on top of SysML

–aimed at improving strategic gaps in communications and interoperability

of complex systems of systems (e.g. operational and services system of systems, co-design and

manufacturing system of systems, …

• UAF views are well organized, meaningful and consistent (example for Operational Information)– Operational taxonomy (Op-Tx)

– Operational structure (Op-Sr)

– Operational connectivity (Op-Cn)

– Operational processes (Op-Pr)

– Operational states (Op-St)

– Operational interaction scenarios (Op-Is)

– Operational constraints (Op-Ct)

Summary – perspectives

Pro-active industry involvement is critical to achieve full MBSE interoperability

9

• MBSE is a key business success factor

• Interoperability (based on standards) is becoming a critical capability for MBSE

• Airbus is involved in:

–the development of MBSE standards (LOTAR MBSE, AP243 ed1, SysML V2, etc)

–the requirements of standards implementation by MBSE editors

–on-going activities in the aerospace industry via the A&D PLM AG MBSE WG

Airbus supports the set-up of implementer forums for MBSE interoperability

(e.g. preparation of RV&V implementer forum based on STEP)
