Introduced IMO measures to reduce CO2-emissions

EEDI - Energy Efficiency Design Index • as a future mandatory technical measure for new

ships (first interim Guidelines published in 2009 as MEPC.1/Circ.681)

EEOI - Energy Efficiency Operational Indicator • as a voluntary technical measure for ships in service

(first interim Guidelines published in 2005 as MEPC/Circ.471, revised in 2009 as MEPC.1/Circ.684)

SEEMP - Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan • as a mandatory operational measure for existing ships

(first interim Guidelines published in 2009 as MEPC.1/Circ.683 )

New good development: no emission trading

EU is no longer pushing an Emission Trading System, but “a simple robust and globally feasible approach towards setting a system for • monitoring, • reporting and • verification of emissions based on fuel consumption is the necessary starting point.”

GL Maritime Software | 04.03.2013 | No. 6

It all comes together in simple management cycle as laid down in the SEEMP already

Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan - Process

Measuring (Planning, monitoring)

Doing (implement energy measures)

• Define feasible monitoring KPIs (e.g. EEOI)

• Define the baseline (where you are today)

• Set the targets (to where you want to improve)

• Monitor the target achievement

GL Maritime Software | 04.03.2013 | No. 7

IMO even gives practical guidelines on the monitoring

The energy efficiency of a ship should be monitored quantitatively

Whatever measurement tools are used, continuous and consistent data collection is the foundation of monitoring

To avoid unnecessary administrative burdens on ships’ staff, monitoring should be carried out as far as possible by shore staff

Utilizing data obtained from existing required records such as the official and engineering log-books and oil record books, etc

How do Business Intelligence Systems come into play here

Excel is not a BI system A Business intelligence system is

• Standard software technology that

• facilitates the extraction, transformation and loading of data from different data sources

• into a user-friendly and interactive reporting and analysis package

Is all this new

• no, but only in the last years technology has found its way from corporations to mid size companies (effort and cost wise)

GL Maritime Software | 04.03.2013 | No. 10

GL is deploying the most widely used maritime BI technology today: GL FleetAnalyzer

• Allianca • Aegean Bunkering • Arpeni (APOL) • Chios Navigation • Eimskip • Feederlines • Furtrans • Hamburg Süd / Columbus Shipmgmt • Hartmann Schiffahrt • MACS • Norddeutsche Reederei • Temas Line • R. F. Laeisz • Pertamina • ...

GL FleetAnalyzer integrates own and other source systems

Inspections, Maintenance,

Repair, Overhaul

Purchasing & Logistics

Quality, Safety, Compliance

Finance, Controlling

Voyage Management

Chartering HR, Crewing

Source systems from several software vendors

Extraction, Transformation, Loading

e.g. GL ShipManager

What was the EEOI on a specific service, only on the ocean legs only counting fair weather conditions?

Examples: dummy figures

GL Maritime Software | 04.03.2013 | No. 14

Which port gave me the most air in my bunker?

Examples: dummy figures

GL Maritime Software | 04.03.2013 | No. 15

How much SOx we have emitted in ports? Examples: dummy figures

GL Maritime Software | 04.03.2013 | No. 16

You would have all the data already today, you just need to capture them electronically
