WELCOMEFROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

This year EFCLIN meets in the “heart of Europe”, in Brussels,

the capital of the European Union. I invite you to be inspired

by this versatile place and welcome you, our guests,

delegates, exhibitors and lecturers to the Art Deco Hotel

Crowne Plaza - le Palace.

WELCOME TO BRUSSELS

The EFCLIN Congress and Exhibition is once again distinguished

by its versatility. Keynote speakers, contact lenses lectures, IOL

lectures, commercial presentations and workshops will offer informa-

tion about the latest developments in the industry. The industrial

exhibition offers the opportunity for you to familiarize yourself will

all the new market developments and to widen your network at

the same time.

The Medical Devices Regulations (MDR) is still al big topic for us.

Should you have any questions, a highly qualified team of speakers

will be available during the conference and especially on Saturday

morning. Take the opportunity, because it is high time to be pre-

pared for the MDR. For all those who are less concerned with MDR,

we offer a general program of lectures in parallel. Our special

thanks go to our sponsors Contamac Ltd. and Boston Materials

Bausch + Lomb who are supporting these two tracks.

Also this year we remain true to the principle, lectures in the morning

and exhibition in the afternoon. The speakers and exhibitors

are delighted to support this format as everyone will receive the

attention they deserve. I can’t wait to see you all back in Brussels!

LOCATIONBRUSSELS

Brussels, officially the Brussels-Capital Region, is a region of Belgium compris-ing 19 municipalities, including the City

of Brussels, which is the de jure capital of Belgium. The Brussels-Capital Region is located in the central portion of the country and is a part of both the French Community of Belgium and the Flemish Community, but is separate from Flanders (in which it forms an enclave) and Wallonia. It covers 161 km2 (62 sq mi), a relatively small area compared to the two other regions, and has a population of 1,2 million, with a metropolitan area of over 2,1 million people, the largest in Belgium. It is also part of a large conurbation extending towards Ghent, Antwerp, Leuven and Walloon Brabant, home to over 5 million people.

Brussels is the de jure capital of Belgium. It has a population of 1,2 million inhabitants. The main language, is French (about 90%) as well as Flemish. The Grand-Place of Brussels is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage.

Brussels grew from a small rural settlement on the river Senne to become an important city-region in Europe. Since the end of the Second World War, it has been a major centre for international politics and the home of numerous international organisa-tions, politicians, diplomats and civil serv-ants. Brussels is the de facto capital of the European Union, as it hosts a number of principal EU institutions and the name Brussels is sometimes used metonymically to describe the EU and its institutions. The secretariat of the Benelux and headquar-ters of NATO are also located in Brussels.

However long you plan to stay in Brus-sels I can confidently predict one thing…it won’t be long enough! So, our

best advice is to visit the hotel reception desk, take a tourist map and ask the staff to mark just some of the following for you:

THE GRAND PLACE The Grand Place is the main attraction in the city centre and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1998. The square is dominated by the 15th century Flamboyant Town Hall, the Neo-Gothic Breadhouse and the Baroque guild-halls of the Guilds of Brussels

THE MANNEKEN PIS, a fountain contain-ing a small bronze sculpture of a urinat-ing youth, is a tourist attraction and symbol of the city.

HÔTEL DE VILLE – TOWN HALL While at the Grand-Place don’t forget to visit the Gothic Hôtel de Ville. It dates back to 1402 and is the seat of civic government. It is an attrac-tive building with arched windows, towers and adorned with sculptures including St Michael slaying a she-devil. If you are feeling ener-getic, climb the 96 metre high Brabantine Gothic tower and enjoy the amazing views over the city.

CITY MUSEUM – MAISON DU ROI (FRENCH) – BROODHUIS (FLEMISH) The French name of Maison du Roi is translated as ‘the Kings House’ but although the building is a richly or-namented masterpiece, no royalty ever lived here. The Flemish called it ‘The Bread House’ because the house replaced the town’s Bread Market which had been there for hundreds of years.

ROYAL MUSEUMS OF FINE ARTS – MUSÉES ROYAUX DES BEAUX ARTS This is, in fact, twomuseums. The Museum of Ancient Art founded by Napoleon and is particularly noted for its display of the great works of Flanders. The other is the Museum of Modern Art. This was added in 1984 and comprises eight floors, many of which are underground. Between them, they offer over 600 years of fine art comprising paintings, sculptures and drawings.

CENTRE BELGE DE LA BANDE DESSINÉE – BELGIAN COMIC STRIP CENTER Did you know that Belgium has more comic strip artists per square kilometre than any other country? If you love cartoons, you may appreciate this

WHERE TO GOWHAT TO SEE

Page 11: BUSINESS IN THE BEATING HEART OF EUROPE...4h6 t EFCLIN CONGRESS EXHIBITION BUSINESS IN THE BEATING HEART OF EUROPE 25TH – 27TH APRIL 2019 BRUSSELS, BELGIUM EUROPEAN FEDERATION OF

museum dedicated to the comic strip. It is housed in the Waucquez Warehouse, a master-piece in itself, designed by Art Nouveau archi-tect, Victor Horta. You will be taken on the jour-ney a comic strip artist has to make from concept to shop. There’s over 5000 original draw-ings and an entire sec-tion to Belgium’s famous cartoon character hero – Tin Tin. HEYSEL PARK AND THE ATOMIUM Heysel park, located in the west of Brussels, is dedicated to recreation and lei-sure. One of the highlights of the park is the Atomium. This is a glistening 102 metre (335 ft) high model of an atom made out of chrome and steel designed by André Waterkeyn. To really appreciate this structure, take time to gaze up and enjoy the sheer enormity. It was erected for the 1958 World Fair to sym-bolise a new ‘atomic age’. It is an accurate depiction of an iron molecule that has been magnified 165 billion times. It comprises nine 18 metre diameter steel spheres connected by tubes, all of which contain exhibits. It is probably more impressive on the outside than inside but a high-speed, glass-roofed lift takes visitors to the top in just 23 seconds where you can stop for a beer and a snack, take in the views and then get the escalators down stopping off at the various spheres.

SHOPPING No city break would be complete without a spot of shopping. Antique lovers should descend upon the antiques market in Place du Grand Sablon where on the square

1146thEFCLINCONGRESS&EXHIBITION

and the streets panning out from the square, the discerning antique lover may find that special piece. Rue de la Paille, Rue des Mini-mes and Rue de Rollebeek are particularly interesting. Brussels has its own flea market – the Jeu de Balle Flea Market. Rummage around here for gems, secondhand good and period furniture bargains.

Belgium chocolates are a must buy. For pra-lines go to Chocolatier Mary, for a tearoom

experience visit Wit-tamer and for a shop of exceptional displays try Pierre Marcolini. Some chocolates are en-crusted with real, yet edible, gold.

If it has to be designer fashion then head for the Galleries. There are three Galeries Saint Hubert, Galeries du Roi and Galeries de la Reine. They are worth popping into just to take a look at the amazing glass roof.

PROGRAMFRIDAY 26TH APRIL

OPENING CONGRESS Clarity & Vision 8th fl.

09.00 Congress Opening by ECFLIN President Armin Duddek09.05 Welcoming Address of the president of the Belgian Dr Guy Sallet Ophthalmology Congress (OB) 09.10–09.25 What benefit the EU has for small and Erik Hansson medium-sized enterprises Erik will present the reasons behind the reform, the main novelties

introduced, the gradual implementation throughout the transition periods, the Commission priorities for this work, the new governance setup and take a more global view looking at the effects of the reforms in a wider global context. He will describe the progress made with regard to the implementation and highlight some of the challenges in this process.

09.25–10.00 1. Keynote: Presbyopic Lens Surgery: Dr Guy Sallet Choosing the right IOL In presbyopic lens surgery, many attempts have been made to improve

material, design and optics of intra-ocular lenses (IOL) in order to get an improved multifocal vision with good contrast sensitivity. Multi-focal IOL’s as well as extended depth-of-focus (EDOF) IOL’s give great patient satisfaction although patients should be aware of possible side-effects and compromises. Different IOL’s on the market will be described, each with their benefits and possible draw-backs.

10.05–10.30 2. Keynote: Contact Lenses in 2020 Prof. Dr Lyndon and Beyond… Jones This review will take a look at some of the innovations and consider

how the efforts will change the way contact lenses are used, not only by those who wear them but also by those who fit them. The technolo-gies covered will include such diverse areas as drug delivery, disease diagnosis and management, myopia control and sophisticated imaging and augmented reality opportunities.

PROGRAMFRIDAY 26TH APRIL

CONTACT LENS LECTURES Clarity & Vision 8th fl.

11.10 Opening Session Tanja Malkus11.15–11.45 Controversies in Scleral Lens Wear Eef van der Worp Scleral lenses are high on the agenda – of any specialty contact lens

course around the world basically – with all the benefits that sclerals have to offer. But we also need to be critical on a number of controversies – topics that have been highlighted at the recent special issue in the scientific journal Contact Lens & Anterior Eye (the BCLA journal). This only proofs that scleral lenses are growing up and are taken seri-ously. The main topics of that issue will be covered and discussed in this lecture.

11.50–12.10 Commercial Presentation 1–4 – Optocraft GmbH / Boston Materials Bausch + Lomb / Contamac Ltd. / V-Optics-Visuol

12.10–12.40 Corneal Infiltrative Events (CIEs) Prof. Dr Lyndon and Contact Lenses: Avoidable or Not? Jones This presentation will provide a review of corneal infiltrates associated

with contact lens wear. The incidence, possible etiology, classification and clinical appearance of non-infectious corneal infiltrates in lens wear-ers will be discussed, along with methods to lower the chance of lens wearers developing them, through appropriate choice of lens material and wearing modality.

12.45–13.05 Commercial Presentation 5–8

Lambda-X / DAC International Inc. / Larsen Equipment Design / Contamac Ltd.

13.10–13.35 Myopia Management Eef van der Worp For years now in our industry and profession - optical and optometry alike - there is almost nothing else that gets so much attention as myopia man-agement. But where do we stand with this today? It is sometimes confus-ing: on the one hand special myopia clinics are opened and are very successful, on the other hand, not everybody is convinced of its effectivity – and there is some strong opposition as well because of safety issues of (young) children and contact lenses. This session tries to bring all pros and cons on the table.

IOL LECTURES Creativity 1st floor

11.10 Opening Session Michele Cornely

11.15–11.45 Intraocular Lens – For Better or Worse Dr David Spalton He will look at some of the successes, failures and new ideas in IOL

development for PCO prevention, for micro incision surgery, to extend depth of focus and restore accommodation.

11.50–12.05 Commercial Presentation 9–11 – Lambda-X / Larsen Equipment Design / Soleko S.a.P.

12.10–12.30 Calcification of Prof. Dr med.

Hydrophilic IOLs Ramin Khoramnia Even though calcification of hydrophilic IOLs seems to be a rather rare late complication of cataract surgery, there have been several cases in the last few years of IOL opacification. Explantation rates seem to be ris-ing during the last decades. IOL calcification has often been associated with a severe reduction of vision quality for the patient. The different types of IOL calcifications can be divided into primary, secondary, and pseudocalcification, as suggested by Neuhann and associates in 2008. Primary calcification is an IOL-related clouding attributable to a material defect or problem during the manufacturing of the lens. Secondary calcification has multifactorial external causes and can affect any IOL with certain material properties. A false-positive form is referred to as pseudocalcification. In primary or secondary IOL calcification, granular deposits that form below the IOL surface may result in a substantial decrease of visual acuity and even necessitate IOL exchange.

12.45–13.00 Commercial Presentation 12–13 – Optocraft GmbH / Boston Materials Bausch+Lomb

13.00–13.30 Rotationally Asymmetric Multifocal Intraocular Prof. Dr Jonathan Lenses Versus Rotationally Symmetric Multifocal Moore Intraocular Lenses

Both rotationally symmetric and asymmetric multifocal IOLs provide a range of clear vision and spectacle independence however in some cases patients may report a reduce subjective visual perception due to visual disturbances. Careful examination and consideration of preopera-tive characteristics is essential with multifocal IOL use to provide optimum postoperative outcomes. Correct selection of near additions and placement of asymmetric multifocal IOLs and the use of a combina-tion of EDoF and trifocal IOLs can be used to also provide enhanced postoperative outcomes.

11.15–11.45 MDR Implementation Challenges Steve Morganfrom a Material Suppliers PerspectiveThe imminent transition from the Medical Device Directive to the Medi-cal Device Regulation continues to pose tremendous challenges for device manufacturers and the supporting supply chain. For example, the historic use of generic test data no longer meets the requirements of the new directive, with the result that specific testing of device/material combinations is required. This presentation will describe some key considerations for supporting a successful MDR transition from a suppliers perspective.

This workshop will provide results from a market research study that details how Eye Care Professionals currently work with their labs, selection criteria for which labs they choose, and suggestions to deliver on the needs of your current and future customers.

09.55–10.45 The do’s and don’ts of lens care Eef van der Worp Contact lens care, maintenance & safety is highly undervalued. Much attention in our specialty lens field and industry goes to the fitting pro-cess, the indication range and the technical and material considera-tions - but a large part of the success, and failure, of specialty lenses relies on contact lens solutions, hygiene and handling. This course explores the possibilities, pitfalls and dangers. It focusses on know what to do and not to do regarding contact lens storage, know what to do and not to do regarding contact lens application & removal and most importantly, to understand the safety issues related to tap water usage in the specialty lens regimen.

THE EFCLINAWARDS

In short, award winners are those who have made a “special” contribution. Such contri-butions may have been of a technical

nature, relating to product or process design, the development of an instrument or maybe a novel technique solving a common problem. Those who have spent a lifetime in a commer-cial stream of the industry might deserve recognition, or those that have served another organisation, body or association may be worthy winners. Occasionally it might not be possible to identify a particular individ-ual within an organisation and perhaps a whole company or other body shall be regarded as right for recognition. Nomina-tions are encouraged from all EFCLIN mem-bers using the form on the page marked “Nominate” on the EFCLIN website Do you know someone who deserves recognition?

THE EFCLIN LAUREATE AWARDThis is the highest accolade that EFCLIN can bestow. It is reserved for those who, in the opinion of the EFCLIN Board have made an outstanding and long term contribution to the good of EFCLIN.

Since 1996 EFCLIN has attempted to recognise some of the more significant achievements in the industry by means of a series of awards. Awards are made to those individuals who have demonstrated a dedication and commitment far beyond what might normally be expected.
