Momox Business Case
Momox, founded in 2004, has offered an online platform for buying and reselling pre-owned media products since 2006. The platform targets amongst others books, video games, clothes and DVDs and is Germany’s leading ReCommerce company. In 2011, Momox started its internationalization by expanding to Great Britain, France and Austria. The Berlin based company has now 750 employees and in 2012 achieved a turnover of €60mn. Recently, the US has been added to its international target markets. More than 120,000 products are bought up by Momox on a daily basis. One of the investors is Acton Capital Partners (Burda Digital Ventures).
Momox uses third-party seller marketplaces, such as EBay and Amazon, to sell its pre-owned merchandise to its international customers. In early 2015, Amazon announced to its international marketplace-sellers, that they were obliged to provide either a local returns address or cover the return shipping costs, even if selling abroad. All resellers had to implement these new requirements by 12 March 2015, as they were otherwise in danger of losing their sales license.
Momox had a high number of returns from Amazon sales internationally and offering free returns to the logistics center in Germany became a costly business. In order to make international selling on Amazon feasible, Momox needed a local return address and returns handling in order to comply with Amazon’s rules without being faced with enormous costs.
