The schedule released last week by USD 342 Athletic Di- rector Mark Lackey has the MHS boys team battling the Cyclones of Riverside High School on Monday and the girls team facing the Eagles of Silver Lake High School on Tuesday. It also has both of Jefferson West High School’s teams playing on Tuesday, the Tiger boys against the Red Hawks of Hiawatha High School and the Tiger girls against the Seahawks of Bishop Seabury Academy. MHS, JWHS and four other schools, Riverside, Silver Lake, Maur Hill-Mount Academy and Cair Paravel Latin School, will be represented at the tourna- ment by both a boys squad and a girls squad. Veritas Christian School will be joining Hiawatha to round out the eight-team bracket for the Boys Division, while Kansas City Christian School will be joining Bishop Seabury to complete the eight- team bracket for the Girls Divi- sion. In recent years the field for the tournament has been Bulldogs, Trojans meet at “The K” in April The paper learned last Thurs- day that McLouth High School’s baseball team will be going up against Troy High School’s team Saturday, April 11 at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City, Mo., as part of this year’s High School Baseball Classic sponsored by the Kansas City Royals. The game between the Bull- dogs of MHS and the Trojans of THS is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. The contest is open to the public, and there will be no charge for either admission or parking. High school teams selected for participation in the base- ball classic sell vouchers for tickets to Royals games prior to the start of the Major League Baseball season. Area residents interested in catching “the boys in blue” in action at “The K” this year can pick up a Voucher Order Form at the MHS office. Tickets in two sections, Field Plaza and View Reserved, can be purchased through a voucher. Field Plaza tickets are priced at $25 each, View Reserved tickets at $13 each. The sale of vouchers will end March 23. MIT starts Monday, will feature 16 teams made up of either eight boys teams and seven girls teams or seven boys teams and eight girls teams. Where there were seven teams involved, four of them were assigned to a bracket and the other three to a pool for round robin play, but that always meant that one of the bracket teams, the one that lost the consolation game, only got to play two games during the tournament while everyone else played three. This year, every team will be playing three games. Here is the schedule for the first two days of the 2020 MIT: Monday, 6 p.m., the top-seed- ed Cair Paravel girls vs. eighth- seeded Kansas City Christian (Gold Gym); 6:15, the second- seeded Maur Hill-Mount Acad- emy girls vs. seventh-seeded Riverside (Purple Gym); 8, the second-seeded McLouth boys vs. seventh-seeded Riverside (Gold Gym); 8:15, the top-seeded Maur Hill-Mount Academy boys vs. eighth-seeded Silver Lake (Purple Gym). There will be two regional meets next month, one in Paola and the other in McPherson. Both will now take place Friday, Feb. 14 and Saturday, Feb. 15. They had been scheduled for the 15th only. According to the news re- lease the paper received from KSHSAA, because of the rule that prohibits a wrestler of either gender from wrestling more than five times a day, the organization was forced to extend the regional meets by a day to account for the possibility that a girl could be involved in more than five matches in try- ing to earn a berth at the state tournament. The female wrestlers at Os- kaloosa High School and Jef- ferson West High School will be competing in the regional meet at Paola. All told, 71 schools have been assigned to that re- gional. At each regional, the top six wrestlers in each of the established weight classes, 101 pounds, 109 pounds, 116 pounds, 123 pounds, 130 pounds, 136 pounds, 143 pounds, 155 pounds, 170 pounds, 191 pounds and 235 pounds, will qualify for the state meet. It is slated to be held Thursday, Feb. 27 in Salina. Over 950 girls are out for wrestling this winter, according to KSHSAA. The first basketball games of 2020 for the varsity teams at Oskaloosa High School and McLouth High School saw each of the schools record a win the evening of Jan. 7 in McLouth, Oskaloosa’s girls topping the Bulldogs 52-30 before McLouth’s boys downed the Bears 48-31. In the boys game, McLouth led 12-7 at the end of the open- ing quarter and was out in front by seven points at halftime, the score 23-16. When the two teams returned to the court for the start of the fourth quarter, the home side was comfortably ahead by 16 points, the score 35-19. Jaxson Pope and Tayshawn Barfield delivered a one-two punch for Steve Lilly’s Bulldogs, with Jaxson knocking down 16 points to lead the squad, while Tayshawn was right behind him with 15. With the victory, the purple and gold improved to 4-1 on the season. A.J. Kreutzer paced the Bears on offense with 11 points. Oskaloosa had three play- ers finish in double figures, Regan Curry, Reese Curry and Jenna Pfau. Regan led the way with 15 points, and Reese and Jenna chipped in with 10 points apiece. The victory enabled the crim- son and blue to go to 4-2 on the season under Drew Kraxner. Samantha Pope and Jaci Lackey shared scoring honors for McLouth, with each girl connecting for 7 points. According to the news re-lease the paper received from KSHSAA, because of the rule that prohibits a wrestler of either gender from wrestling more than five times a day, the organization was forced to extend the regional meets by a day to account for the possibility that a girl could be involved in more than five matches in try-ing to earn a berth at the state tournament. The female wrestlers at Os-kaloosa High School and Jef-ferson West High School will be competing in the regional meet at Paola. All told, 71 schools have been assigned to that re-gional.
