Amy Livingstone and Julie Wilson started award

winning nursery brand Cheeky Chompers

when they were on maternity leave with their

first children.

Amy and I were lucky to meet through having

children however we never imagined we’d set

up business together soon after! The business

came out of our experiences when our babies

were teething and we were constantly picking up

and sterilising dropped teethers – ‘Why doesn’t

someone invent a teether that stays attached to

the baby’ we thought…We launched the world’s first chewy dribble bib

the Neckerchew in 2013 and haven’t looked back!

We make all our fabric products in the UK and

have designed a range of stylish and innovative

everyday parenting essentials to make parents’

lives that little bit easier. All our products are

practical, attachable, machine washable and

stringently tested to worldwide standards. Our award winning Cheeky Chompers range

is now nine products strong, offering the

Neckerchew, Comfortchew, Neckerbib, Chewy

the teething hippo, the Cheeky Blanket and an

adaptation of our Neckerchew for older children

and adults with oral sensory stimulation needs.

In 2017 we launched the Muslin Collection

comprising four innovative products made from

100% super soft organic muslin: Neckerchew,

Neckerbib, Comforter and our latest innovation

the MultiMuslin, one beautiful teething muslin with

six clever uses. We launch stylish new designs

every Spring and Autumn and our latest product

will launch in May!We appeared on Dragons’ Den eleven weeks in

to business with the Neckerchew and whilst the

Dragons loved the product they did not believe

our projections. When it aired a year later we

benefited from a fantastic PR boost and traffic to

our website had an astonishing uplift during and

after the broadcast. It’s amazing the recognition

that early appearance has brought us. We’re

pleased to say that we smashed all the figures the

Dragons’ dismissed within a year of business so

we’re one of the ones that got away!

We founded the business with our own funds and

support from friends and family and continued

to fund our growth from company profits, with

no external investment. We have enjoyed rapid

growth and are delighted to have sold more

than one million Cheeky Chompers products

around the world. We are the baby gift of choice

in many high street stores such as John Lewis,

JoJo Maman Bebe, Boots and overseas export

accounts for over 70% of our turnover as we

export to 36 countries with the USA, China, Taiwan

and Australia being our largest. In 2017 we were

delighted to be the only Scottish winners of the

prestigious Natwest Everywoman Award and our

products continue to win awards across the world!

However, it hasn’t been all plain sailing. Neither

of us had backgrounds in retail and it has been

a steep learning curve understanding barcodes,

pallets, MOQ’s and the export documentation!

We invested heavily in IP and then successfully

gained first to market positioning in key markets,

but have had many battles enforcing our IP. We

have fought hard to manufacture our products

here in the UK and maintaining a competitive

price is a constant consideration. We work hard

to constantly innovate, refresh and stay one

step ahead which means you can never get to

the end of the to do list! All that couples with a

growing team, two on maternity leave and our

young children and families it’s all about effective

juggling. Running your own business is certainly

not the easy option- but definitely very rewarding!

Maternity leave leads toBusiness!

Do something you’re passionate about and excites you- this motivates you at work and home!

SPRING ARRIVALS INHAIRDRESSING

Taylor Ferguson Hairdressing | Tel: 0141 332 0397 | 106 Bath St, Glasgow G2 2EN

Anne Ferguson is a director of celebrity stylist Taylor

Ferguson Hairdressing. With Spring, the season of freshness

and renewal, almost upon us, Anne focuses on all that’s new in the world of hairdressing. MAD ABOUT THE CURLSWe have many clients who are all about the

curls. They have wonderfully natural curly hair

that delivers a unique look. We’re always on the

lookout for new products that can enhance that

curly appearance. Schwarzkopf’s Mad About

Curls & Waves collection is a holistic care and

styling regime dedicated to curls and waves.Their Mad About Curls High Foam Cleanser

is a sulfate-free formula that gently cleanses

all curl types. It adds softness, improves the

manageability factor and delivers curl definition.

The Mad About Waves Sulfate Free Cleanser

is a gentle cleansing formula for wavy hair

leaving the hair hydrated and giving your waves

definition.

GIVE THAT YELLOW LOOK THE HEAVEIf your hair colour preference is blonde, then

there can be many factors that could result in

your hair generating a bit of a yellow hue. None

of us would opt for it so if it happens we tend to

look in the mirror and panic then rush out to the

salon for a fix!

Goodbye Yellow is the very aptly named

new shampoo product from Schwarzkopf

Professional. It’s their first highly-pigmented

anti-yellow wash. It’s free of SLS/SLES sulfates

and so this wash provides a gentle cleansing

action and instant tonal deposit to counteract

and neutralize underlying warm tones. According

to the makers, their unique pigment combo

of purple and blue is created to neutralise

unwanted yellow undertones while at the same

time cleanses your hair. They’ve adjusted the PH level to 4.5 so there are effective and long-lasting results. So for us out there who do favour the blonding look, it’s farewell to any yellow tinges and hello to clear, bright and beautiful blonde hair. Also means that the warmer tones will be replaced by really Nordic, super cool, ice blonde looks.

NATIONWIDE CONNECTIVITY

#BWSMAGAZINE

Scotland-wide access to broadband and mobile

connectivity is key to a strong economy and a

more inclusive Scotland. The Scottish Government

and its partners (the UK Government, Highlands

and Islands Enterprise, BT, local authorities and

the European Regional Development Fund) have

invested over £400 million in the Digital Scotland

Superfast Broadband (DSSB) programme. More

than 800,000 premises in Scotland can now access fibre broadband, and by the end of 2017 at

least 95% of premises across Scotland will have

access to a fibre broadband network. Following

strong take up figures, £17.9 million was reinvested

back into the programme which will ensure thousands more premises benefit via an extended

build, by the end of 2018.Instant internetVivienne Seeley runs her graphic design

consultancy, VivID, from her home in the Scottish

Borders. Vivienne designs brand identities, websites and other marketing materials for her

local and UK-wide client-base. Vivienne says: “Fibre broadband has made a huge

difference to me. I need to send large design files

to clients and printers and in the past, this could

take ages. The internet connection would often

crash and I would need to start again, which was

really frustrating. Now, files are sent instantly. I just

don’t have to think about the technology any more,

I can get on with my business.” Upgrade promotes household harmony With two teenage children and a husband who

runs a recruitment company from home, Vivienne

says that before they had a fibre connection, all

four of them would compete for the available

bandwidth. “Our two

businesses tended to come first, which meant that

my sons were frustrated because they could not

do what they wanted online such as play X-Box

games or download videos. So it is fantastic for us

that now everyone can enjoy the same fast speeds

regardless of how many people are online at the

same time.”

Vivienne’s husband Paul agrees. “I log into our

office network from home and find that now we have fibre broadband, the connection is considerably faster and more reliable.” Key points to note:• Due to the scale and complexity of the task

at hand, it’s not possible to connect all areas

at once. • Both the current commercial and DSSB

programmes are still in the process of rolling

out fibre broadband.• To find out where and when fibre broadband

will roll-out in your area visit www.scotlandsuperfast.com• You’ll need to contact your service provider to

switch to fibre broadband as this doesn’t happen

automatically.• Beyond the current programme, the Scottish

Government has made the commitment of

delivering 100% superfast broadband across

Scotland by 2021.‎ • Some residents may be eligible for a subsidised

basic broadband installation; designed to

provide a better broadband connection for those

on the lowest speeds ahead of any future public

investment in superfast broadband. Further

BWS Questions with….INVESTING WOMENWhat was your own career background? In 1990 at the age of 25 I was appointed CEO of

regional economic development agency, Gordon

Enterprise Trust where I was privileged to work

alongside a board of inspirational entrepreneurs

who greatly influenced my own future thinking.

I went on to run three companies, ranging from

a 50-employee business to my own enterprise

policy consultancy founded in 2003. I later

became the UK’s first Advisory Board Member to

the Global Banking Alliance for Women, based in

Washington DC.What inspired you to launch Investing Women?

I was driven by both passion and frustration to help

overcome some of the barriers preventing female

entrepreneurs from achieving their full potential.

Access to finance for female-led companies

was a key area of focus through my work for

the UK Government; where I led on this issue.

Through my business activity in the US, I became

aware of the ‘echo effect,’ where a rise in female

angel investors has been proven to be closely

mirrored by an increase in women-led companies

gaining investment. I wanted to replicate that

phenomenon in Scotland. What has Investing Women done? We established a dynamic network of

experienced businesswomen who are keen to

help other female entrepreneurs achieve growth

and financial investment. We then created our

AccelerateHER Awards and annual Ambition

and Growth Conference to provide a platform

for aspiring businesswomen. This approach is

working: this year we doubled the number of

awards entries to almost 190. In the first two

years of the awards, finalists have raised over

£3.75m in investment between them. Investing

Women has invested in 10 companies to date, 80

per cent of which have female founders in their

growing teams. The overall investment leveraged

exceeds £10m as we frequently invest alongside

other investment syndicates. TC Biopharm,

Scottish Biotechnology and Sofant Technologies

are among those exciting companies we’ve

supported.

Is it right to focus solely on women entrepreneurs?

The phenomenal opportunity for economic

growth represented by women entrepreneurs

is still far from being fully realised. Achieving gender equality will be a

wonderful outcome from releasing this potential; and it is the wider economy that will benefit. Increasing the number of female-led start-up businesses to the same level of those run by men would

deliver a five per cent boost to our economy,

equivalent to over £7.6bn. And that’s before these companies start to grow and scale!. Does Scotland provide a good environment for

female entrepreneurs? There are many positives. Scotland is rich in

innovation and we lead the world in areas such as

life sciences and technology - including Fintech,

which offers great economic potential. We have

an entrepreneurial ecosystem the envy of many

other countries and both this ecosystem and the

Scottish Government are increasingly proactive

in supporting female entrepreneurs. Partners in

the ScotCanDo backed Framework for Women’s

Enterprise and emerging programmes like

Unlocking Ambition are achieving real impact

here. Thanks to the great support of LINC

Scotland; Scotland has a strong, collaborative

business angel community. This is of growing

importance to Scottish companies given 2017

saw business angels invest and leverage £54m to

boost Scotland’s most innovative businessesWhat would define success for Investing Women?

For us, success is seeing equal levels of female

and male business angel investors in the future.

This will mean a near doubling of current levels of

investment into Scottish companies and, applying

the ‘echo effect,’ will help significantly more

women grow their companies across international

markets.

HAIR EXTENSIONS IN YOURLUNCH BREAK?It’s a specific and expert art to deliver a full head of natural looking hair extensions for a client – and it takes time. We’ve built up our expertise over decades. Depending on the look

you desire – whether you crave extra volume or

length or both - and the number of extensions

strands we apply it could take anything up to

three hours or more. But a new 2018 product launch by Great Lengths, the quality hair extensions specialists,

has revealed the brand’s GL Tapes. Dubbed as

‘fast-track luxury’, the GL Tapes use the same

quality, luxurious real human hair as traditional

extensions. There’s no difference in the flexibility

– you can curl, trim and really treat like normal

hair. The extensions remain invisible – and only the desired effect is seen. Two major differences are the speed of application – a full head could be done in just over an hour, depending on head size etc – and the fact they can be reapplied. So the makers reckon

they can last up to eight weeks – and after that

you can have them reapplied. GL Tapes are especially good if you’ve never previously worn

hair extensions. They’re easy to manage – yet

have all the same luxury quality. Price for a half

head would cost around £400, depending on

the look desired and strands applied. We offer

free no obligation consultations.

STRAIGHTEN UPHair straightening, relaxing or smoothing treatments have come a long way in recent years. The systems devised by the Nanokeratin

brand have been well tried and tested for us and our clients over a long period. Some of our clients with particularly frizzy hair tell us the treatments have been ‘life changing’ – and

one raved about how she could now go out in

the rain walking the dog and no longer fear her

crowning glory would convert to a frizz-bomb!

Currently there is the treatment that requires

the client to stave off washing their hair post-application for a full three days. Wash it before

and the impact isn’t the same. Their newest application no longer requires that

wait-time so if you were heading off on holiday

or needed straightening or frizz removal for an

imminent special occasion that would tick the

box. Prices for both start from £250 including a

cut and blow dry.

A new haircare regime for curls or waves.

team, creating opportunities for new products,

new customers and new markets. Our journey

has been an exciting one and way exceeded any

expectations we had. The pace and challenges

launching this year and further expansion into

OUR TIPS FOR SUCCESS• Listen to your gut feeling- trust your instincts!

• Make sure you have identified a genuine gap

in the market then make the solution the best

constantly deliver the best product or service

you can to meet their needs• Do something you’re passionate about and

excites you- this motivates you at work and

home!• Prioritise a work/life balance and look after

CRÙBAG is no ordinary

textiles company. Borne out

of a desire to share the hidden

ocean, it fuses a knowledge of

science with luxury fashion. The

result; a high-end accessory

and interiors brand, dedicated

to marine ecology and its

ambitions set on being stocked

in some of the world’s most

renowned department stores.

Founder, Jessica Giannotti, a

marine science graduate had

little to no knowledge of fabrics

and fibres, but started her

business because she loved

aqua life. Jessica had trained in

a marine lab not an artist studio.

She was used to microscopes not

ink and print manufacturing.

From a young age, Jessica was

truly fascinated by the ocean and

spent much of her time by the

water, consumed by the variety of

colours, textures and movements

in the sea. Moving to Argyll

back in 2006 – a coastal town

blessed with idyllic beaches and

picturesque scenery – Jessica’s

love of the ocean was re-ignited

and a desire to share this with

others became her biggest

passion.

One summers day in her

hometown of Oban, Jessica

found herself taking notice of

the scarves adorning women’s

necks – which saw butterflies

and floral prints a plenty, before

it hit her, the eye-catching and

intricate details of the ocean

would make for an interesting

textile design.

So, turning the fascination of

phytoplankton and the strange

organisms, she had seen under

her lens into an evocative,

sustainable design business,

was a very unexpected turn of

events. One that was not without

its challenges, especially when

Jessica was pushing new print

and manufacturing techniques.

After getting Crùbag off the

ground, Jessica enlisted the

help of the Highlands and

Islands Innovation Team who

over time have played a pivotal

role in supporting Crùbag’s

growth and development. By

providing introductions to its

expansive network, offering

mentorship, small grant funding

and courses, HIE’s innovation

services enabled Jessica to

Jessica to improve Crùbag’s

existing products, expand its range

and move towards scaling up.

“Sometimes a good idea isn’t

enough. I wanted to develop a

product that could compete with

brands such as Hermes, and sell

in Liberty and Selfridges. But for

this I had to have consistency of

quality,” Jessica tells us.

“I work with digital printing, which

is a relatively new development,

and not without its hurdles. It’s

advancing very fast, but it’s not the

same as screen printing. With my

technique I don’t have to separate

the colours so I can show the

world of the oceans without losing

the nuances and the vivid shades.

“I’m able to work with photography

and research images and it gives

me a freedom that another type

of printing would never give me.

But with this novel technique I

faced many issues trying, from

the technicality of getting ink

penetration right to bringing the

right depth and richness of colour

alive on the fabric.

“I needed to improve the

product and push the

boundaries of what was

possible and I was able to do

this with HIE’s support. The

innovation project allowed me

to experiment and find the right

partners. Without HIE’s help it

would have been impossible. I

am now able to select and know

how to produce the right quality

for each type of fabric.

“I can now focus on my

production and supply chain

and match it to each specific

product. Through HIE’s

innovation services I was able

to find not just one solution for

all but a specific solution for

all the different materials I use

and that’s given me the overall

consistency which I’ve never

had before.”

Now based in a studio in

the old teaching lab at the

Scottish Marine Institute in

Oban, Jessica officially started

Crùbag in December 2013, in

what she describes as a very

‘subconscious process.’ That

process and the voyage of

innovation can feel very isolating

at times.

Jessica accessed HIE’s

innovation services very early

on her innovation journey and

said: “HIE has always been

on my side from the very

beginning. They have helped

me access knowledge which

has allowed me to become the

kind of company that can have

a product which can be sold at

the best shops in the world.”

A huge advocate of innovation,

Jessica believes it’s something

that we can all embrace:

“Innovation is an amazing tool

for everyone to use. It’s like a

motor, a flowing energy that

allows you to get out of your

comfort zone, think and transfer

knowledge. You can apply those

practises to other areas in your

business and invent new things

that could be helpful and keep

you competitive.”

Jessica’s story follows the

ebbs and flows of the ocean: “I

wanted to combine science,

design and innovation in a really

specific way. I had to learn a lot

and made many mistakes but

it’s been really rewarding and

incredible.

With HIE’s support Jessica has

gone on to fulfil her childhood

dream which was inspired by a gift

from her grandfather: “When I was

four he gave me the complete

Jacques Cousteau encyclopedia

of oceanography and it opened

my eyes to a different world. So,

when I moved to Scotland it all

came back and I just thought

yeah I need to do this. And I

did it and it wouldn’t have been

possible without HIE’s support.

It’s been a very generous, very

human, informative experience. An

essential one too as its really given

me that extra edge.”

As an experienced nurse, you might think

that becoming a personal stylist is a little

incongruent, but Denise Winton from Giffnock

saw it as a natural progression from helping

people medically to enabling her clients to

build their self-esteem and to look and feel

good. This month Denise was crowned the 5th

top stylist in the whole of House of Colour out

of scores of experienced stylists.

“My desire to make people feel the best they

could was the same when I was a nurse, as it

is now as a House of Colour personal stylist.

Seeing the positive change in anyone who have

had their colours analysed is magical. It is as if

lights have been switched on inside them. I love

the confidence and feeling of wellbeing it instills

- just with the right colours, no pills or potions. I

have always loved making people feel better -

what more could you want from a job?”

Denise was pregnant when she had her own

colours analysed and returned to work in

Glasgow in the Nurse Teaching Department of

Royal Hospital for Sick Children, wearing make-

up and clothes which she had been told suited

her. “I felt my lips were on stalks as my Spring

coral lipstick seemed very bright, but some of

my colleagues looked up from their books and

literally did a double take, everyone started

complimenting me on how well I looked and

started talking about how I was blooming in

pregnancy. I realized how amazing and powerful

colour analysis is and have never had a day

without my lipstick since!

“I love my job because it is so varied. I have many

connections in the corporate market and over the

years I have helped with branding and business

presentation skills for different disciplines from

stockbrokers to drug reps. In business many of

us who present, network and work with teams

internally and externally are memorable. But are

we memorable for all the right reasons?

Are we perceived as unique, presentable

professionals in our people-centered work

environment? Do we confidently engage with

clients, prospects and colleagues with an authentic

message and personal presence? Do we consider

the impact of colour on how we progress in

business? What people say about your business

and your brand is reinforced by your interactions

with others and so being memorable, conveying

the right messages about ourselves, but also

differentiating ourselves is increasingly important.

Teaching my clients colours and style means I can

help them develop their own look and to stand

out for all the right reasons. I love meeting new

people every day, learning what makes them tick

and hopefully making their life better with a little

bit of colour and style.”

One of Denise’s clients, Jackie Milligan an

Advanced Neonatal Nurse Practitioner from

Ayrshire, says: “Having my colours done meant

I discovered the colours that really suit me,

especially my reds and I now wear the right make

up especially lipstick. Talking to Denise about

style has given me permission to avoid stiff formal

clothing for formal occasions and shown me how

to wear clothes that make me look and feel great,

and are really me.”

Top Tips for Dressing to Impress at Work

1. Wearing the right colours and styles can make you more ‘visible’ at work meaning more

compliments, conversations, confidence, inclusivity and ultimately opportunities.

2. Wear clothes that fit you. Very baggy shirts and oversized jackets may look slouchy and

un-kempt. In the same way, overly tight-fitting dresses, skirts and shirts could give your

co- workers the wrong impression.

3. Pair bold-coloured shirts or blouses with neutral blazers or vice versa. Work doesn’t have to

mean boring, but you don’t want to dazzle your colleagues with a rainbow of colours which can

be distracting, one impact colour and two neutrals is a good rule of thumb.

4. Quality is important, so pay attention to getting quality shirts, blouses, jackets, cardigans etc. for

work, that extra investment will send the message that you are worth it!

5. Know your audience. If you have a big meeting, it’s important to wear something that suits the

atmosphere you wish to create. For example, if you’re meeting with a fashion editor,

what you wear is going to be different compared with if you’re meeting with an investor.

Glasgow-based Rebecca Pick started

her company, Pick Protection, after her

neighbour was attacked and nobody came

to help. 4 years on, having won multiple

entrepreneurial awards, Rebecca has raised

over £1 million funding to developed the next

generation of employee protection solutions.

Rebecca, 24, had the idea for a wearable

protection alarm that would link to the Police

when her neighbour was attacked and sadly

nobody came to the rescue. While studying

a business degree at the University of

Strathclyde Rebecca pursued her idea. She

pitched to angel investors that agreed to invest

in Pick Protection and invest in the mission of

keeping employees safe.

As Rebecca researched personal protection

she learnt that employee protection is an

underserved market. With the increasing use of

technology many employees are now working

alone at many points in their jobs such as client

meetings, traveling, working from home, and

the list goes on. Employers have a duty of care

to take steps to ensure the safety of their lone

workers and with increasingly stringent Health

& Safety legislation this is a growing market

in the UK. Rebecca spotted that lone worker

protection is a very under-innovated sector and

there is big opportunity for a new company to

deliver easy to use solutions with high quality

customer support to shake up the market.

Many employees aren’t fully aware of their

responsibilities to their employees and what

would happen if an incident occurred. Speaking

about this Rebecca said - “At Pick Protection we

work with employers to help them understand the

process involved to keep their employees as safe

as possible. Education is a big part of what we

believe in, the more people that are aware of their

responsibilities means the more they can look

after their employees.”

Every 9 minutes in the UK an employee is

attacked whilst working alone and Rebecca is

passionate about changing this horrifying statistic.

“I am really proud of the easy to use and cost

effective protection solutions that Pick Protection

have developed to help employers keep their staff

safe, nobody should have to feel unsafe in their

place of work.”

Speaking of the support she has received in

setting up Pick Protection, Rebecca said “I have

been incredibly lucky to have received fantastic

support from many different organisations

and individuals. I’ve learnt so much from very

experienced people that have been generous with

their time and have given me the benefit of their

experience and knowledge.

In 2016, through a fortunate encounter with a

fellow Strathclyde alumni Rebecca met John

alarm receiving centre. Pick Protection has

now partnered with Unipart and the highly

accredited UK based centre provides the back

end monitoring of Pick Protection’s solutions.

Rebecca said ‘as a start-up company we are

exceptionally lucky to have the fire power of a

company like Unipart behind us and I believe

they will be an integral part of our success in

the future”.

Pick Protection was named by the Scotsman as

one of the Top 5 Tech Companies To Watch in

2016 and most recently the company has been

shortlisted by the Health and Safety Excellence

Awards for Security Innovation of the Year. 2018

is set to be a landmark year for Pick Protection

as they further expand in the UK.

Rebecca said “Pick Protection has developed

technologically advanced lone worker solutions

to provide the best user experience for

employees and we are committed to working

with our customers to make sure usage of our

solutions is as high possible. I am so proud of

what Pick Protection looks like today and I am

so excited to see what the future holds. “

Top Tips for Success:

Take the first step today – Just start! Don’t focus

on everything you need to do, just look at what

are the first things you need to do and break

them down into small tasks.

Ask for help – Don’t be afraid to get in contact

with people and ask for help. There are so many

organisations out their ready to you help and

they want to hear from you!

Be cheeky – Never miss an opportunity! If you

think somebody can help you for example by

facilitating an introduction to somebody you

would like to speak to you won’t lose anything

by just asking.

Attend start-up events – the more people

you speak to the more you will find out what

support other start-ups have found useful and

also never know the interesting people you

might meet!
