CHANGE OF NAME I have changed my old name from MAHESHBHAI HIRABHAI MAKWANA to New Name MAHIRKUMAR HIRABHIA MAKWANA Add. : 9-B, Vikas Society, Gopalpuri, Gandhidham - 370201. 484 By Subhash Narayan New Delhi, The next wave of bank consolidation is planned during the October-Decem- ber quarter of the current fiscal with the Finance Min- istry starting to seek infor- mation from PSBs on pos- sible targets for amalgam- ation/mergers and acquisi- tions with justification on how such an initiative will synergise operations and strengthen the bank. Government sources said that heads of all public sector banks (PSBs) have been asked to be ready with their consolidation plan so that it could be placed be- fore the alternative mecha- nism (AM) of the new gov- ernment as soon as it is formed. The AM, or a group of Ministers under former Fi- nance Minister Arun Jaitley, was created in 2017 to fast track consolidation and help create strong and competi- tive banks, serving as cata- lysts for growth, with im- proved risk profile and one that can exploit economies of scale. “The next round of bank consolidation may take place in the third quar- ter of FY20 as enough room has to be given to PSBs to correct their balance sheets (in the first half of current fis- Finance Ministry starts groundwork for fresh bank consolidation cal) before embarking mergers as only this would ensure that resultant entity is strong and credible,” said the source quoted above. Last year, the AM approved the proposed merger of Vijaya Bank and Dena Bank with Bank of Baroda (BoB) that has become effective from April 1, 2019. In 2017, the State Bank of India ab- sorbed five of its associates and the Bharatiya Mahila Bank. This year, the consoli- dation exercise is expected to revolve around Punjab National Bank (PNB) to take some smaller PSU banks under its ambit. The names of Syndicate Bank, Oriental Bank of Commerce, Andhra Bank and Allahabad Bank is being considered for the merger. However, a final call would be taken only after both acquirer and the target bank come up with their re- spective proposals to the Fi- nance Ministry. Informed sources said the move would add muscle to a big bank like PNB, which has just emerged from a dark phase of fraud by dia- mond merchant Nirav Modi and also has posted profits. The buzz is also that banks such as Union Bank of India and Bank of India (BoI) may be called upon to give their views on the exercise. In March this year, there was also talk of a merger between PNB, Syndicate Bank and Indian Overseas Bank. Before that specula- tion was rife about a pos- sible merger of all Delhi headquartered banks: PNB, Punjab & Sind Bank and Ori- ental Bank of Commerce. The government has been nudging the state- owned lenders to go for merger so that there can be fewer and stronger banks. The Finance Ministry wants banks to undertake an internal exercise for the best match and then come up with the merger idea. This plan would have to weigh various aspects in- cluding regional balance, geographical reach, IT com- patibility, financial burden and human resource transi- tion. While only one-third of organisations in India have embarked on their AI jour- neys, those companies that have adopted this technol- ogy expect it to increase their competitiveness by 2.3 times in 2021, said the study that surveyed 200 business leaders and 202 workers in the country. “Economies and busi- nesses that have yet to em- bark on their AI journey run a real risk of missing out on the competitive benefits that are enjoyed by leaders,” said Rohini Srivathsa, Na- tional Technology Officer, Microsoft India. According to the findings, India needs to build upon its investment, data and strategy in order to accelerate its AI journey. The study also underlined the need for cultural changes and skilling and re-skilling workforces to make AI work for the country. The rise of AI means that there was a necessity for workers to re- skill and upskill to remain relevant and play a part in the workforce of tomorrow, Srivathsa said. “The jobs of today will not be the jobs of tomorrow, and we have al- ready seen demand for soft- ware engineering roles ex- pand rapidly beyond just the tech sector,” Srivathsa added. To help developers and organiaations build ex- pertise in Cloud computing, data sciences, AI and Internet of Things (IoT), Microsoft on Monday also announced the roll out of the “Week of AI” , a specially curated five-day workshop series. The next wave of bankconsolidation is plannedduring the October-Decem-ber quarter of the currentfiscal with the Finance Min-istry starting to seek infor-mation from PSBs on pos-sible targets for amalgam-ation/mergers and acquisi-tions with justification onhow such an initiative willsynergise operations andstrengthen the bank.

Government sourcessaid that heads of all publicsector banks (PSBs) havebeen asked to be ready withtheir consolidation plan sothat it could be placed be-fore the alternative mecha-nism (AM) of the new gov-ernment as soon as it isformed. The AM, or a groupof Ministers under former Fi-nance Minister Arun Jaitley, was created in 2017 to fasttrack consolidation and helpcreate strong and competi-tive banks, serving as cata-lysts for growth, with im-proved risk profile and onethat can exploit economiesof scale. “The next round ofbank consolidation maytake place in the third quar-ter of FY20 as enough roomhas to be given to PSBs tocorrect their balance sheets(in the first half of current fis-

cal) before embarkingmergers as only this wouldensure that resultant entityis strong and credible,” saidthe source quoted above.Last year, the AM approvedthe proposed merger ofVijaya Bank and Dena Bankwith Bank of Baroda (BoB)that has become effectivefrom April 1, 2019. In 2017,the State Bank of India ab-sorbed five of its associatesand the Bharatiya MahilaBank. This year, the consoli-dation exercise is expectedto revolve around PunjabNational Bank (PNB) to takesome smaller PSU banksunder its ambit. The namesof Syndicate Bank, OrientalBank of Commerce, AndhraBank and Allahabad Bank isbeing considered for themerger. However, a final callwould be taken only afterboth acquirer and the targetbank come up with their re-spective proposals to the Fi-nance Ministry.

Informed sources saidthe move would add muscleto a big bank like PNB, whichhas just emerged from adark phase of fraud by dia-mond merchant Nirav Modiand also has posted profits.

The buzz is also thatbanks such as Union Bank ofIndia and Bank of India (BoI)may be called upon to give

their views on the exercise. In March this year, there

was also talk of a mergerbetween PNB, SyndicateBank and Indian OverseasBank. Before that specula-tion was rife about a pos-sible merger of all Delhiheadquartered banks: PNB,Punjab & Sind Bank and Ori-ental Bank of Commerce.

The government hasbeen nudging the state-owned lenders to go formerger so that there can befewer and stronger banks.

The Finance Ministrywants banks to undertakean internal exercise for thebest match and then comeup with the merger idea. This plan would have toweigh various aspects in-cluding regional balance, geographical reach, IT com-patibility, financial burdenand human resource transi-tion.
