    PREREQUISITES:

    COURSE DESCRIPTION:

    The single most important resource in any organization is the people: the human resource (HR).This course focuses on the understanding and management of human behavior to assist theLearner in understanding the principles, policies, and practices related to the procurement,development, maintenance, and, utilization of human resources. The Learner will examineenvironmental planning influences, legislation influencing human resource management (HRM),job specification methods, and recruiting policies.

    PRELIMINARIES/PRE-COURSE SURVEY: Review the Learner Area web sitehttp://learners.ncu.edu. Access and review the Course Catalog, which contains all relevantpolicies and procedures applicable to Learners, and complete the Pre-Course Survey. Please readthe entire course syllabus before beginning course work. The survey goes directly to the Mentorand gives the Mentor information about new Learners entering the course.

    ASSIGNMENT SUBMISSIONS: When you "create" new assignments, use headers and footersto indicate your name, course, assignment number. For instructions about creating headers andfooters, go to the Help file for the word processing program you use. Name the file using thisformat: DoeJXXX0000-1. The "1" stands for the assignment number. Save the file in RTF (RichText Format). Open the Learner Area, click on the course code. Find the Course Work area.Read the Help file by clicking on the "?". When ready, click on the "+" and select yourassignment file by browsing. Your file will be uploaded to the server. Your Mentor will receive amessage that homework has arrived. When the Mentor grades your work, the Mentor will uploadthe graded assignment and you will receive a message that course work has arrived. You maythen view your graded assignment in the Assignment area. If you have questions, please contactyour Learner Advisor at 1-888-327-2877. Bulk assignments are not acceptable. Assignment

    The role of the Human Resource (HR) manager has changed considerably over the past decadewith more emphasis on global sourcing, multicultural cross dimensional teams, manpowerplanning, and new regulatory compliance issues.     HR must act as the unbiased solicitor of new company talents through targeted recruitmentefforts. Recruitment is a critical activity because the resource of people makes all of the assetswork and provides the intellectual energy to drive the enterprise. Finding the best talent,

    selecting the highest prospects, and training and retaining good people is essential to acompanys lifeblood and performance. The HR role must screen out and identify best candidatesto replenish key jobs and develop new human initiatives.

    The Human Resource Management (HRM) function must not only assist in the selection processbut develop corporate training programs that fit the companys needs and requirements.Educating individuals in company policies, benefits, and rules is only one aspect of employeetraining. New regulatory government laws dictate training on security, safety, and ethical issues.

    As the new HR Vice President for a company, the President has asked you to present new

    alternatives to the performance appraisal process. Traditionally employees have an annual reviewby their supervisor. You have been asked to introduce alternative methods to the traditionalapproach.

    Compile and Present OptionsCompare (explain how they are alike) or contrast (discuss how they are different) severalperformance appraisal methods. You might wish to review a 360-degree evaluation, or aManagement by Objective (MBO) program based on differing time intervals covering qualitativeand quantitative (subjective and objective) ratings. Please also explore the merits of eachappraisal program including its advantages and disadvantages.
