Waterford Emergency Center becamean Urgent Care facility on April 1, 2001,and changed its name back to WACC(Waterford Ambulatory Care Center). The new Urgent Care hours will beMonday-Sunday, 7 a.m.-11 p.m. for walk-in services. WACC is owned andoperated by Doctors' Hospital ofMichigan based in Pontiac, and theUrgent Care Director is DHM's Chief ofStaff, Ray Breitenbach, M.D.

The change from an emergencycenter to a designated "Urgent Care"facility usually benefits the patient in theform of lower co-pays from their healthinsurance providers if you can safelychoose an Urgent Care center over anEmergency Center.

In addition to Urgent Care, WACCwill continue providing physical therapy, sports physicals, vaccinations, radiology(X-Rays, Mammograms, Bone DensityTesting), lab services, and occupationalmedicine services for employers (drugscreenings, pre-hire testing, etc.). WACCalso is home to North Oakland ASCSurgical Center specializing in endoscopyprocedures.

There is often confusion about thedifferences between an Urgent Carefacility and an Emergency Center, andwhen to choose an EC over an UrgentCare. Urgent Care Centers are suited forpatients who need treatment for lessserious conditions like colds, infections, minor scrapes and cuts, and sprains.Doctors' Hospital of Michigan still retainsits 24-hour Emergency Center in Pontiacat 461 W. Huron Street (on the corner ofSeminole Street and W. Huron Street) formore serious emergencies. ❏

MILFORDMONTESSORISCHOOL2700 E. Commerce, Milford248-685-7600

Milford Montessori School iscelebrating 36 years of educating childrenfrom three months to 12 years in OaklandCounty. Two years ago we launched ourSpanish Immersion Infant/ToddlerPrograms, making us the only recognized"Montessori Children's House" to serve thiscommunity from infancy through sixth-grade. We remain dedicated to meeting theneeds of our families and community.

This year we will be expanding ourelementary curriculum! While other schoolsare facing larger teacher/student ratios andprogram cutbacks, we remain dedicated tokeeping a 1:8 ratio, which allows more timefor a wider variety of subject matter. Inaddition to the core curriculum, we arepreparing them for a challenging futurethrough more enrichment programs. These

programs include Chinese, more scienceprograms, and a wider variety of physicaleducation classes such as martial arts, archery, YMCA, yoga and Tai Chi. Thebeauty of these new programs is they werethe current elementary children's own ideas. They are always inspiring us to do more. Astheir horizons expand, so do ours. And it'scatching! Their strong sense of communitytoward the younger children has inspiredprograms and presentations to the otherclassrooms, such as their CitizenshipPresentations from the core Peace

Curriculum, incubating and raisingchickens, and cooking new recipes for lunchfrom their garden harvest.

After spending a morning in ourelementary, a parent (who is a middleschool teacher) exclaimed, "Now I knowhow you accomplish so much — the kids doall the work!" A true Montessori classroomis self-sustaining at this level. They set theiracademic goals with the teacher on aweekly basis, and work independently tomeet those goals. The multi-age classroomoperates as a small community of individual

learners who willingly help each other whenneeded. That's the ultimate goal ofeducation. To create leaders with a strongsense of community who know how to learnand problem solve.

"At the pre-school level, we cultivatethe child's natural curiosity and desire tolearn," says Director Regina Boffi. "Weprovide a culturally rich environmentequipped with the sequential Montessorimaterials in addition to multiple 'hands-on'exercises. In any one classroom, you mayobserve children simultaneously washingdishes, exploring geometry, working a puzzlemap, or having a phonics lesson. In theprepared environment they are joyfullydoing their 'work' independently whilesocializing with each other. The MontessoriPhilosophy of 'follow the child' allows thechild to work at their own pace. Thechildren are comfortable in their classroomsbecause they know this is a nurturingenvironment of mutual respect." AMontessori education "prepares children forlife," and not just the next academic level.

We encourage you to schedule anobservation of a classroom so you can seethe Montessori difference, and thedifference our students are making for thefuture. ❏

WATERFALLJEWELERS II340 Town Center Blvd.,White Lake248-698-1200www.waterfalljewelers.com

A successful tradition for 32 years inOakland County — Waterfall Jewelers. Now beginning its next generation offamily jewelry stores as the thirdgeneration of Browns join their parents atWaterfall. Working with the samebusiness philosophies instilled throughouttheir lives — high standards, integrity andfamily pride — that their grandfather andparents established when the storeoriginally opened, these lessons continuein the business today through customerservice, product quality and jewelryexpertise.

Waterfall Jewelers II opened in WhiteLake in May of 2010 with Andrew Brownmanaging the store with his cousin, JoeStrong. The new store caters to newcustomers, bringing more people into thefamily heritage.

As teenagers working after school andthrough the summer, these years of"learning the business" helped themdevelop a passion for the jewelrybusiness. Then as college students theirbusiness skills were honed so that theycould step into the shoes of theirparents and grandparents in providingjewelry service to Oakland County andbeyond.

"We have residents that we've neverhad the pleasure to meet before," AndrewBrown said. "And we have familiarcustomers who have found their way inafter moving to a different part of thecounty. They find this store as a moreconvenient location for them. Mostpeople are familiar with the WaterfallJewelers name."

And customers who have knownWaterfall for decades are finding the sameexact commitment and quality as well ascustomer satisfaction in the thirdgeneration of ownership as theyexperienced with the first.

"We definitely stay in touch with ourroots," Brown said. "We are keeping upthe family tradition and operating thesame way as the Waterford store."

Strong agreed, as well.

"Early on, I learned that anyone cansell jewelry, cars or other products. Butwhat determines your real success is theservice you provide after the sale. Weoffer excellent service. We want todevelop relationships with our customersand not just sell them one piece ofjewelry," he said.

Located on M-59 in the busyJCPenney Village Lakes Shopping Plaza,Brown said he enjoys the prime spot forbusiness.

"Our location is ideal in this busyplaza," Brown explained. "We havesignage on both sides and that makes useasier to find for all of our customers."

With the store's interior designed fromscratch, the Brown family looked forwelcoming color schemes, comfortableupholstery and attractive display areasthat would set their store apart and makeit customer-friendly.

Though the store has its own

distinctive feel and isn't just a cookie-cutter setup from the original Waterfordflagship store, the two do share the samequality brand merchandise. Internationalbrand names such as Tacori and Simon Gline the display counters. And there arespecialty and unique items such asTacori's new 18K/925 fashion linecollection.

"The inventory is based on whatcustomers want, including high fashionas well as classic styles," said Andrew'sfather, Tom Brown, Jr. "Having twolocations means that we can offerour customers a much larger selection."

Adds partner Joe Strong, "Long-timecustomers at the Waterford store cancome to White Lake and see fresh newproduct lines. Customers really love thefact that we have so much to choosefrom."

With so many years of experience,Andrew and Joe have become strong

jewelry professionals. To stay on top of thebusiness, the duo attends countlessjewelry seminars, training sessions andworkshops to learn about the latestproducts, techniques and trends. Theyhave attended Gemological Institute ofAmerica classes, as well.

Both have a strong businessbackground, having business majors incollege: Strong earning a degree fromNorthwood University and Brown fromMichigan State University.

Strong said his education plays a majorrole in his success. Since Northwoodspecializes in business-related fields, hesaid his professors had real-worldexperience and were some of the best inthe business.

For more information aboutWaterfall Jewelers II in White Lake, visitthe store at 340 Town Center Blvd. or call248-698-1200. They are open Mondaythrough Saturday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. ❏
