Ed-Vance ProgramEd-Vance (18-21years), nurturesStudent Success. Ourteachers are committedto differentiatedinstruction and ourapproach caters to thewhole learner. Students’needs shape and driveprogramming. We offerCredit Recovery, SpecialEducation, the OntarioYouth ApprenticeshipProgram (OYAP), andDual Credit Programs.We also have a DailyBreakfast Program,Lunch & Learn, andextra-curricularactivities. Students alsohave access tocounselling, a SocialWorker, and a PublicHealth Nurse.

Burnhamthorpe Collegiate Adult Learning Centre (BCALC)offers a variety of credit courses for students wishing either tocomplete their Ontario Secondary School Diploma or needing toupgrade in preparation for college or university admissionrequirements. The Ed-Vance Program is for students aged18-21, and the Adult Program is for students who are 21 years ofage and over. Both programs offer preparation for the college,university, and workplace. We also offer Co-Operative Education,English as a Second Language, Prior Learning Assessment andRecognition (PLAR).

Adult Credit ProgramThe Adult Credit Program offerscredit courses for students who are21 years of age or older. Studentsbecome eligible to receive theOntario Secondary School Diplomawhen they complete 30 credits, theOntario Literacy Credit and 40 hoursof Community Volunteer work. Students prepare for university,community college, apprenticeship and/or work throughparticipation in a pursuit of academic success. The program isavailable to students from a variety of backgrounds.

Essential Skills Upgrading (non-credit)Essential Skills Upgrading (formerly Literacy & Basic Skills) helpslearners improve reading, writing, math, and basic computer skills.This non-credit program help adults (19+) work towards goals,including entry to Adult Credit Program, college upgradingprograms, employment or greater independence. Non-Credit English as a Second Language (ESL)Non-Credit English as a Second Language (ESL) Program is forstudents 18 years or older who want to improve their Englishlistening, speaking and writing skills. Instruction is based on theCanadian language Benchmarks system for language proficiency,the national standard for second-language learners of English inCanada.

Hairstylist Apprenticeship ProgramStudio 500 Pre-Apprenticeship Program prepares you with theskills necessary to launch your career as an Apprentice Hairstylist.Classes are taught by experienced industry professionals in fullyequipped and modern classrooms. Student Life - Where You Belong

Students at Burnhamthorpe Adult Learning Centre start theirday with our Daily Breakfast Program. They also participatein a variety of extra-curricular activities, including peertutoring and lunchtime sports activities. Field trips enrichcurriculum and allow students to expand their knowledgeabout the world around them. Voices Into Action is astudent-run group that lat social issues by raising awarenessand developing at strategies for positive change.

What sets us apart from other schools is ourstudent-centered approach which promotes literacy andnumeracy goals and works to build success for everystudent. As well, we regularly assess student needs andachievement strategies. We provide a warm and supportiveatmosphere, promoting equity and inclusion initiativesthrough out the various programs.

Parent and Community Engagement

Community involvement is an important aspect at BurnhamthorpeAdult Learning Centre. Each year, we celebrate Winterfest andSummerfest where allow programs come together as a learningcommunity. Once a month, we have Lunch and Learn programs.Lunch and Learn sessions provide our students with relevantinformation about issues that pertain to their lives. Our guests atLunch and Learn have included: nothes against Drunk Driving, skillsCanada Speaches, and Breakaway -Addicition Success. Collegeand university speakers visit regularly to inform students aboutprograms and future career options.
