State of the Art Burner SystemThe combustion system is a key element in efficientthermal processing of ores, minerals, and similar bulksolids in a rotary kiln. The process requirements arestringent in a variety of thermal processing systemssuch as in cement-making, limestone calcining,recovery of lime in pulp mills, and the combustion ofwastes to name a few.

The burner system is an important and an integralcomponent of a rotary kiln system to optimize thecombustion of fuels to release heat in the kiln.

Safety considerations, ease and flexibility of operation,product quality, energy efficiency, maintenance costs,and the environmental impact of the products ofcombustion are some of the most critical areas that akiln operator must evaluate in selecting a kiln burner.

The Metso combustion system is designed with theflexibility to suit specific kiln firing applications:

• Wide selection of components including burner,primary air fan, fuel valve trains, pumps and heatersets, flame management system with panel.

Based on the extensive field experience of Metsoengineers, the critical factors of flame shape and locationto complement kiln internals is applied to burner de-sign.

Burner design features include single or dual primaryair path, dual (axial and radial) natural gas paths, easilychangeable fuel oil nozzle, adjustable fuel nozzle toprimary air nozzle relationship, and easily adjustableburner mount and primary air flow considering tubecooler performance.

The Metso NCG incineration Gun is a separatly mountedand separatly aimable assembly to conform with ourexperience that NCG introduction via the main kilnburner is detrimental to main flame development andcontrols, as well as to overall process control. SeparateNCG introduction and placement of the NCG stream inrelation to the main flame enables proper main flamedevelopment and achievement of peak temperature,resulting in stable kiln operation and maximuminciniration of the NCG’s thus minimizing TRS emissions.

NCG Incineration Gun features include separate gaspaths for each NCG stream to be incinerated, outercooling air path, 316 stainless steel construction for partsin contact with NCG’s, 304 stainless steel outer coolingair blast pipe with 3” thick insulating castable lining,flanged connections for NCG and cooling air paths,mounting flange with adjusting mounting screws, anda cooling air fan.
