BURMA Information for Intake Commencing 2012 Country Framework_____________________ In 2010, Australia announced an expanded aid program in Burma wit h a more broad- based development objective. Assis tance increased to $48.6 million for 2010–11, up almost $20 million from $29.1 million in 2009–10. The increase recognises the immense development task faced by current and future generations of Burmese people. Australia's aid program targets health (especially for mothers and children), basic education, food securi ty and sustai nabl e li veli hoods. The ai d program also recognises the serious and sustained decline in the human capital of Burma by incl udin g ef fo rts to buil d th e ca paci ty of  people and institutions in priority areas. Aus tralia ’s ass ist ance is del ivered thr ough United Nations agencies and Austra lian and international non-government organisations.  Type, Level and Number of Scholarships____ Following a succes sf ul pilot in 2010-1 1, Australia will provide up to 15 scholarships to Burmese citizens to undertake pos tgr aduate studies in Australia beginning in the 2012 academic year. Awards will predominately be at Masters level; PhDs may be available for exceptional applicants who can demonstra te abi li ty to trans fer th ei r research skills, particularly in the areas of focus of Australia’s aid program, on return to Burma. Both Australian Development Scholarships (ADS) and Australian Le aders hi p Awa rd s Sc ho la rs hi ps (ALAS) wi ll be of fered to Burmese applicants. Australian Leadership Award Scholarships will be available across al l el igible countr ies on an annual basis, for high achie vers wishing to undertake pos tgra duate study at an Australian higher education institution. Selection for an ALA Scho lar ship is highl y competitive. Australia’s assistance is delivered throughUnited Nations agencies and Australian andinternational non-government organisations.

Cross cutting themes will also beconsidered including law, public policy,

economics, development studies andinternational relations.

A gender balance is a priority for theAustralian Government. The scholarshipprogram will strive for equalrepresentation of males and females.

In line with the Australian Government'sstrategy "Development for All: Towards adisability-inclusive Australian aid program2009-2014", AusAID is committed to

offering educational opportunities topeople with disability.

 The ApplicationProcess________________ 

Applications are assessed on academicmerit and the potential contribution todevelopment outcomes in Burma.

Applications may be submitted either

online or by delivery to the AustralianEmbassy Rangoon.

How to apply:1. One application form is used for bothADS and ALA scholarships

2. Review the Development Scholarships Handbook and Australian university courseinformation on the web

3. On-line applications are available at:Development Scholarship Application4. Paper based applications can beobtained through the AustralianEmbassy in Yangon

5. Gather the required documentationand information6. Applications close on 31 May 2011.

Language proficiency:Applicants must undertake one of thefollowing English language proficiencytests and achieve the necessary resultsbefore the scholarship can be awarded:

• an IELTS Academic Test with anoverall score of at least 6.5 and no bandless than 6 (please note some Australian

university courses may require higherresults), or

• a TOEFL paper-based test score of atleast 580, or

• a TOEFL computer-based test scoreof at least 237, or

• a TOEFL Internet-based score of atleast 92.
