High School Diploma Dual Credit Tech Prep Certifi cations

Students participating in CTE programs can graduate with college credit in dual credit classes, Tech Prep college credit for many classes and industry standard certifi cations or licensures that enhance their high school experience and add value to their BISD diploma.

Career Clusters icons are being used with permission of the: States’ Career Clus-ters Initiative, 2010, www.careerclusters.org

Burleson ISD participates in course articulation agreements with Navarro College, Hill Col-lege, Tarrant County College and Texas Advanced Technical Credit. Tech Prep allows students to start a college technical major in high school. Students begin free course studies in high school and continue into a post-secondary school hav-ing already banked college credit. Free Tech Prep credit saves time and money. Many students earn 12 or more credit hours toward a cer-tifi cate or degree in a career fi eld.

Students in Tech Prep programs can earn college credit through:

• Content-enhanced articulated courses

• Dual Credit

Dual Credit Dual credit courses are college level high school or college courses taken during high school for which the student earns both college and high school credit at the same time. By taking dual credit courses you can make substantial progress toward your college degree before fi nishing high school while you learn about a career. Dual credit is possible with an agreement between the District and a college.

Ask your counselor about dual credit courses that may be avail-able in your area of interest.

CTE Scholarships

Students in Career & Techni-cal Education classes have the opportunity to participate in many competitions through student organizations. Often BISD students advance to State and National levels and earn Scholarships for Post-secondary tuition at various colleges to continue their pursuit of a career preparation. FFA, Skills USA, Cosmetology, Project Lead the Way, Criminal Justice, Cisco, Business Professionals and HOSA, are just a few organizations and programs where students can com-pete for scholarships and awards.

Industry Standard Certifi ca-tions and Licensures

Students participating in CTE pro-grams of study have the opportu-nity to learn the skills to take and pass industry standard certifi cations and licensing exams. Many certifi -cations earned in CTE courses lead to high wage employment.

BISD desires to ensure that all students graduating from high school are prepared to continue post-secondary education and have the competencies to enter the workforce.

Providing students with credentials and certifi cations which are recog-nized and valued by business and industry assures a positive future for our students.

Education Plans

Students in 8th grade create education plans to begin their exploration of a career. 8th graders use CareerCruising to explore career interests and post-secondary education options that might include a university, a community college or a technical college. Each student will create a 4 to 6 year education plan outlining the courses they plan to take that will guide them into the college and career pathway of their choice. A high school education plan might include a CTE Career pathway.

Career Pathways are like road maps of learning that help students plan for and pursue further education and careers. BISD Career and Technical Education courses are grouped by Clusters, shown on the cover. Within each cluster there are a number of career pathways to explore. On the following pages, BISD would like to introduce you to the Career Clusters offered at our high schools.

Contact your counselor or explore the BISD Academic Course Guide on CareerCruising.com for more information about each Cluster and Career Pathway. The BISD Course Guide includes specifi c information about each course offered in all the clusters.
