Dear Friends,
IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF THE SAINTS
As our Church in Wouldham is dedicated to All Saints, I think often
of the lives and examples of those who have gone before us.
The month of March gives us a wonderful selection of
commemorations.
On the 1st March, David was a 6th century abbot and bishop and
patron saint of Wales. He had the energy to found 12 monasteries and
go on pilgrimage to Jerusalem; a huge effort then. He was known as
‘The Waterman’, perhaps a teetotaller.
7th March, 2 young mothers, Perpetua and Felicity, one wealthy, one
a slave, were killed in North Africa for their faith in the 3rd century.
They were arrested while preparing for baptism. Undeterred, they
were baptised in prison before being killed. A white rose is named
after them.
17th March, Patrick. He was kidnapped and enslaved in Ireland at age
16. He escaped and trained as a priest and returned as a missionary. It
was an astonishing comeback after his early trauma.
20th March. In the7th century, Cuthbert, the shepherd. He became a
monk and travelled by horse and on foot in remote areas of the north-
east, telling people about Christ and eventually retiring to a life of
solitary prayer on Lindisfarne Island. It is said that at night he was
observed walking into the sea to meditate and that seals came to keep
his feet warm.
By their energy, bravery, ability to overcome difficulties and their
closeness to the natural world, the Saints inspire us and encourage us
on our journeys.
May you be blessed this Lent as we prepare for the Easter festival.
In peace, Mike

THE PEW CUSHION PROJECT AT ALL SAINTS CHURCH
This project is proceeding well and anyone interested in joining the
needle workers will be very welcome. We are working tapestry cushions
for the pews in memory of loved ones. The finished cushion will carry a
permanent label with the name of the donor and/or to whom it is dedi-
cated together with the name of the person who has worked the cushion.
Contributors will be contacted when their cushion is ready and informed
at which Service it will be dedicated.
Each cushion measures 52ʺ x 13ʺ and costs £170. Sharing the cost with
others who have expressed an interest is possible so contributions over
£30 are gratefully received. The cushions are worked by volunteers as it is
a non-profit making activity.
Can you help by making a donation to the scheme? Thank you.

Churchyard Working Group Lately we’ve had a really good response for the working parties in
Wouldham churchyard. Thank you to all those who took part. We would
like to have a group of people who come together on a regular basis to
clear ivy and weeds, tend to uncared-for graves, as well as carrying out
other specified tasks. This will help complement the grass-cutting activity
and keep the churchyard in good
order. This work could also be done
alone at a time to suit you.

BURHAM Church of England PRIMARY SCHOOL
Term 3 at Burham C E Primary School heralded yet more fun,
creativity and sporting participation. The art project in
conjunction with Trenport continues and we are very proud of
our children’s ideas and efforts. A group of our children from
various year groups participated in a gymnastics competition at
Aylesford School in early February and we are very proud of
their effort and achievement. We also held a very colourful charity fundraising day
to support Heart of Kent Hospice when all the children were encouraged to come
to school dressed in yellow and/or pink! This was to recognise the wonderful care
the Hospice had recently given to a former member of staff’s close relative and the
support they had given to the rest of her family.
In addition to our many other clubs and activities, a new Singing Club was formed
in Term 3 under the expert guidance of our Year 6 teacher Mrs Nettleingham. We
are looking forward to much music-making in the coming months. Netball Club is
also back up and running as the days start to get longer as Spring approaches.
As part of their fundraising efforts for their end of year trip to see The Lion King,
Giraffe Class (Year 6) ran two ‘Valentines’ school disco events at the end of Term
3 for Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2. Great fun was had by all who attended
particularly as the children were allowed to wear their disco wear during the day
at school! Well done to Giraffe Class for their organisation of these events and for
raising more funds towards your goal.
As part of their Creative Curriculum in Term 3, Panda, Elephant and Penguin
classes learned about fairy tales and celebrated the end of term with a Fairy Tale
Ball. The children brought their costumes to school and as a result the Ball was
attended by a host of fantastic fairy tale characters! This was a wonderful way to
celebrate the term’s theme and to bring all of these wonderful stories to life. In
Key Stage 2, Dolphin, Meerkat and Tiger classes (Years 3, 4 and 5) immersed
themselves in the Victorian world whilst Giraffe class learned about many aspects
of Aztec history and culture.
As a school we also observed Christian Values Day and Safer Internet Day during
February. This gave us the opportunity to look at these topics as a whole school
during Act of Worship and in class time. Poems and posters were created by our
children for Christian Values Day and children took a questionnaire home to help
them think more about safety issues and the use of the internet in their homes.
Please do get in touch if you are considering our school for your child and we will
be delighted to welcome you and show you round. As always, all updates relating
to our school can be found on our website www.burham.kent.sch.uk

BURHAM PARISH COUNCIL NEWS Court Road Closure: From early February temporary traffic lights
have been used in Court Road on an ‘as and required’ basis. Court
Road will be closed in sections from March/April time but will be
open for access. Providing that funding can be secured, the Wicksteed “Spectra” play
module project will be proceeding. Depending on the funding, it’s hoped
that the equipment will be installed during the summer.
Don’t forget to add Thursday 7th May 2015 to your diaries. This is the
election date. Further information will be published in due course, so
keep an eye on the noticeboards or give me a call. You may not be aware, but any contract vehicles travelling to Peters
Development/BAM site must use a dedicated route. If they are found to
be travelling through Burham or Wouldham and photographic evidence
can be provided that they have utilized the villages, then the contractors
are fined £200. Previously, the fine money has been split between the 3
local parishes.
Defibrillator training is booked for 10 March 2015 at 10.30am at the
Parish Office. I have only 5 places left, so if you are interested in
attending, let me know asap. The training takes approximately 1hr. Dog fouling: Once again complaints have been received from local
residents. Please ensure that you are a responsible dog owner and pick up
and dispose of any dog mess accordingly. Most residents are responsible
but there’re still a few who don’t seem to understand the implications of
not clearing up after your dog.
Don’t forget to recycle all your recyclables, in particular cardboard
and paper which generate funds for the village. From Jan – Dec 2014,
17.8 tons of cardboard and paper were recycled, generating just over
£1,500. It would be great if this year we could hit £2,000, So don’t
throw your cardboard and paper away, collect it up and pop it in the
big blue container with “Smurfits Kappa” written on the side at the
recycling bank at the Village Hall site.
If you have any items that you would like the Parish Council to
discuss, just give me a call on my new number 01634 685936, e-mail
me on [email protected] or come along to the monthly meetings,
normally held the last Monday of the month. The next meeting is
scheduled for Monday 30 March 2015, The Parish Building,

WOULDHAM PARISH COUNCIL
Residents to benefit from local LED street lighting - KCC has agreed to
convert its stock of 120,000 street lights to LED with a Central Management
System technology. Improvements in the LED lighting technology will reduce
KCC's energy bill by around 60% meaning that the Council will be able to return
every residential area to all night lighting. This may be dimmed a little after peak
hours but it will be here to stay. The conversion could start in late 2015 or early
2016 and will take 3 years to complete. For further information visit the Parish
Council website.
Oldfield Drive - The Parish Council has been made aware by residents of several
concerns here. The first is parking by the school and we respectfully ask
residents to park with consideration and not on the bend opposite the school. We
have also been alerted to cars driving the wrong way round the roundabout at the
end of Oldfield Drive. This is a traffic offence.
Parish Council Budget 2015 to 2016 - The Parish Council has set its budget for
2015 to 2016 and are pleased to inform residents this will only result in a 12p or
0.21% increase for Band D council tax.
2015 Elections - On the 7th May there will not only be the UK Parliamentary
General Elections but also all Borough and Parish/Town Elections. Anyone
interesting in putting their name forward for the Parish Council should contact
Tonbridge & Malling Borough Council's Elections Office on 01732 876022 or
email at [email protected]. The Election timetable can be found on the Parish
Council website along with information on becoming a Parish Councillor.
Flytipping - There has been a recent spate of flytipping along Hill Road. Be
vigilant and if you see anyone fly tipping in the parish, please report this to the
police on 999. In all cases, give as much detail as possible: the location, vehicle
make, model and registration number, a description of the offender and a
description of the rubbish. DO NOT put yourself in danger. If you come across
flytipped waste, contact Tonbridge & Malling Borough Council on 01732
444522. If you come across flytipped waste blocking a road, call KCC Highways
on 03000 41 81 81. Courts can fine people up to £50,000 and put them in prison
for up to 5 years for flytipping.
The next Parish Council meeting will be held on Tuesday 3rd March 2015 at
Wouldham Village Hall, starting at 7.30pm. Members of the public are welcome.
If you are unable to attend the meeting but have a question for the council, please

NEW MEDWAY CROSSING – PILING UPDATE Peters Village developer, Trenport, is aware of complaints by a few local resi-
dents about noise and vibration from piling works in connection with the new
Medway crossing. Unfortunately, this work is unavoidable because a bridge is
expected to bear considerable weight and must be founded on hard strata. In this
particular case, the river bank walls bearing the approach roads must also be
stabilised by sheet piling.
Some piling started in October and a larger operation on the west bank river wall
started in December. Since the Peters Village project construction works
commenced in June last year, the site contractor, Bam Nuttall has been working
with an environmental protection team from Tonbridge & Malling Borough
Council (TMBC) who continually assess and monitor the works.
The current status is: all sheet piling on the west bank is now finished and a 600-
metre total on the east bank is nearing completion, progressing away from
Wouldham village itself and potential nuisance there, and the sinking of tubular
piling needed to frame coffer dams - effectively two boxes within the River
Medway. This enables Bam Nuttall to build the two bridge supports - this type
of piling will be less invasive and all piling should be completed by the end of
April. Trenport explained: "Bam Nuttall is a company well known for
environmental awareness and 'good neighbourliness' and its works fall well
within British statutory noise and vibration limits. Furthermore, test locations
have been sited strategically around Wouldham and will continue to be rotated
to ensure that they don't miss any 'pockets' that may be suffering anywhere near
the agreed limits. Monitoring of the operation will continue and we hope that
residents will understand that some disturbance is inevitable in bringing the long
term communications benefits of this new bridge.”
Three Villages Schools' Art Competition - you are very welcome to attend
an Exhibition of the children's works
Primary schoolchildren from Burham, Wouldham and Eccles schools continue
to work hard on an exciting arts project - with £3,500 worth of prize money at
stake. Each school has been invited to create one large artwork with input from
all the pupils. In addition, Year 5 children are each entering an individual piece
of art - in any medium they choose. Prizes include vouchers for Year 5 pupils as
well as £2,000 in cash for the winning school to spend on a specific project or
equipment on the school’s ‘wish list’. There are also runners-up prizes in both
categories
The ‘Why I Love My Valley’ competition is being co-sponsored by Trenport
and Peters Village site contractor Bam Nuttall. The three categories that schools
can choose from are the Valley's ancient history with its evidence of Bronze
Age, Ancient British and Roman habitation; the rich social/industrial history
from the more recent past, notably the cement industry and the people who
worked there and the area's diverse natural history. continued .......

High profile Kent artist, Charles Newington is acting as consultant and mentor
for the schools and has been fascinated to see the children's imaginative ideas
and progress to date. Charles knows all about landmarks, being best known for
the giant chalk-cut figure on the Downs near Folkestone; a unique stylised white
horse, now a regional icon.
Judging by a six-strong independent panel of local judges will take place on 22

MARCH IN YOUR GARDEN
‘If we had no Winter, the Spring would not be so pleasant.’
March can be a challenging time in the garden as the weather
and therefore conditions can be unpredictable at best, but
spring is on its way & early flowers such as daffodils and hellebores will
already be showing. Now that the first signs of spring are here, the will to
get started with the garden tasks for the year starts to rise, and in the same
way that we think of spring-cleaning our homes ready for the finer
weather, so too can we finish tidying and clearing of the remainder of
the winter debris from the garden. Spring is an ideal time to take stock
and review the plants in your garden, and the condition of the existing
shrubs and perennial plants. On finer days you can prune shrubs back to
maintain their shape, and also cut back hardy perennials to make room for
the new growth. Spring bedding plants will be available now, all of which
can be used to fill any spaces before the garden starts to fill out in time for
summer.
Other things to be doing this month:
Clean old pots and seed trays ready for new season sowings
Fill empty plant pots with spring bedding plants, & place near to the
house for a cheery view. Keep feeding the birds until the weather warms
up. Comb through (using your hands as the comb) ornamental grasses to
remove dead leaves and allow for new growth to emerge
Divide plants that are becoming too large - use two forks in the centre to
pull the roots apart – and replant new plant either into a spare patch or
into a pot to establish. Turn your
compost bins to mix in your winter
scraps and garden debris.
Place stakes and supports around
tall plants and shrubs before
growth starts.
Plant onions and early potatoes.
Sow annual flower seeds such as
Cosmos, Dahlias, Sunflowers and
Gysophila

Wouldham All Saints Church of England Primary School
February was a great month with lots of activity (as usual!) including trips
to Sussex to visit the Royal Observatory at Herstmonceux (pronounced
Hurstmonsue or Hurstmonzoo depending on who you talk to!). This was a
great way to round off the space theme and in a similar way all of our
youngest three classes enjoyed trips to Pizza Express to make their own
pizzas as part of their ‘Big Cook, Little Cook’ theme.
We’ve also had fun at Forest School, weekly swimming, library trips and
plenty of opportunity to make tasty, healthy food. We’ve also had chess
and gymnastics competitions, Learning Progress Meetings as well as a
week off!
We started last month with a celebration of Candlemas which links the
end of the Christmas and Epiphany celebrations to looking towards
Easter. Sadly, we’ve missed out on our usual Shrove Tuesday festivities
as it fell during the mid-term break. We will look forward to Easter and
break up on the 1st April which is the day before Maundy Thursday.
No doubt March will fly by and we’re looking forward to seeing the start
of spring and more opportunities for getting out about even more. We’re
visiting Tyland Barn as well as going off to see Brighton and Hove
Albion play one Saturday and have a travelling zoo as well as a storyteller
coming to see us. We’re also completing an art competition entry in
conjunction with Burham and St Mark’s schools and this involves making
a mosaic – if you have any old tiles lying unloved in a shed or garage then
please drop them off to us at the start of the month.
Towards the end of the month we’re hoping to take our cycling club for a
day at Fowlmead Cycling Park near Deal. This group of children have
been enjoying ‘Go Ride’ sessions after school each week and will enjoy
an opportunity to try out their skills in a challenging environment.
We’re sure that by the end of the month we’ll be totally exhausted and
looking forward to time off for Easter – but sure we’ll have had lots of
fun and boosted learning in all areas.
Finally, the ‘Friends of Wouldham All Saints’
are organising a quiz on the evening of Friday
13th March and they would love you to come
and join them. Tables can hold 6 people and it
should be a fun night so if you can join us
please contact the office.
