We learnt all about St Andrew and his desire to share things and be kind. We watched a short video which encouraged Scottish people to celebrate St Andrews Day this year by being like St Andrewand sharing a small kindness with someone. It said that in this way Scottish people could together create something really special. The children had some great ideas about how to share a kindness. I wanted to mention this on the front of the newsletter today because the Bures community this week have proved themselves to be very like St Andrew. Mrs Manning put a message on Beautiful Bures appealing for some help to provide a Christmas tree and within minutes of adding the message the offers came flooding in. Wed like to thank Mr Probert and his family with the help of Adam Norton, for the very impressive tree which is now standing spectacularly in the hall— the children are thrilled with it. Other families have offered to help us to buy crackers for all the children for our Christmas Lunch and supply Christmas tree lights and we have been blown away by the response to our Christmas Raffle! This week our sound of the week is k”, looking at the book Kitesand learning all about weather. The role-playing corner has been humming with meteorologists, and we have managed to look at the UK weather forecasts. All week the children have been keen to create their own kites and send them soaring into the sky; this looked extra stylish in our Kings crowns. We continued reviewing of the numbers 1-5 in maths, and have been working on different representations (ask your child to show you the number 5 but using two hands). Additionally, we have been learning two new shapes; square and rectangle. We have looked at their properties and been on a shape hunt. Were gearing up for the Christmas Nativity, and bracing ourselves for the final weeks of term. This week in Brambly Hedge we have continued learning about the changes in the season by focusing on how some animals react to the change in weather and temperature the Autumn and Winter bring. We learnt about hibernation and migration as a way that animals escape the cold weather. We learnt about animals that hibernate and that birds migrate to and from England during the autumn and early winter. The highlight of the week was when Xander's mummy came to talk to us about a Dutch tradition they celebrate because Xander's Daddy is Dutch. Sin- terklaas (also known as Saint Nicholas) visits Haarlem in the Nether- lands every year from Spain in a steam boat and rides through the streets on his white horse. Sinterklaas is the patron saint of children and his Petes (helpers) come down the chimney to put sweets into the shoes of boys and girls who have been good, then on Sinterklaas's birthday December 6th he delivers presents and more sweets. In the Netherlands they have presents on the 6th December instead of on the 25th. Luckily for Xander, Sinterklaas visits Dutch children wherever they live not just in the Netherlands!! Thank you Mrs Goudkuil for visiting us, we really enjoyed learning more, and thank you for our sweets!

Big Question of the Week “Who is the closest thing to a saint that you know?”

#BeLikeStAndrew This week we celebrated St Andrew’s Day in our assemblies. We learnt all about St Andrew and his desire to share things and be kind. We watched a short video which

The Festive Fun Begins… Wow, you can certainly tell that December has started, there has been a real buzz in Hundred-Acre Wood this

week and the children began their festivities at home. This week our sound of the week is “k”, looking at the book “Kites” and learning all about weather. The role-playing corner has been humming with meteorologists, and we have

  • And Continues… This week in Emerald City we have looked at food chains in science, subtraction in maths and have learnt lots of new adjectives in literacy. We have begun rehearsing our Nativity and collating costumes as well as creating Christmas decorations and cards. This week, Narnia class have been showing a tremendous amount of confidence in all areas of learning. In English we have been looking at playscripts and how they are different from narrative pieces. They have not only been performing some short plays, but have even written their own scripts! In science the children investigated how light can reflect off objects which can help us to see them. In French, the children have learnt how to say hello, what their name is and how they are feeling. Finally, the children completed their finger puppets in Design Technology by adding those finishing touches to make them truly come to life. Hogwarts class have started to investigate how one state of matter changes into another-the snow has come just in time! In History we have researched the Great Pyramids looking at how they were built and why. We’ve been polishing up our maths word problem skills using lots of special vocabulary. This week in the Shire, we’ve continued with our work on Kensuke’s Kingdom, writing to introduce a new character to the story. In maths, we’ve recapped factors and prime numbers, and in computing we’ve developed our Excel skills and the use of different formulas. We’ve also made some fantastic decorations for our beautiful Christmas tree! In Year 6, this week we have been working hard at our fraction skills including multiplying, dividing and finding fractions of amounts. In English we have completed our persuasive letter to Scrooge using our new knowledge of the Victorians, Dr Barnado, The Poor Laws and Lord Shaftsbury's Ragged Schools....'Grabbing, Snatching, clutching, is that how you would like to be remembered Mr Scrooge?' is the phrase that Ellie J included in her letter. We start our independent writes next week and are excited to see the results of our hard work. In history we have been continuing our learning about Bures in World War 2 and finding out about those that fought for us as well as the sacrifices made through lives lost. Our Science work has included finding out about Charles Darwin and the Theory of Evolution as well as a little about Carl Linnaeus and his system of classification of animals. This knowledge will be really helpful in our forthcoming studies of the Rainforest.

  • Christmas Lunch The children’s ‘Christmas Lunch’ will be served on Wednesday 16th December. Please book you child’s lunch on the School Gateway as son as possible.

    Snow Days

We were slightly caught out by the snow today! Here’s a reminder of what we do if the weather does make it difficult to get everyone into school. We will send a ‘Parentmail’ to all parents to let you know if the school is closed. I will also be in touch with the local radio stations and will put a message on the website. Often, like today, it may be the case that we have to open slightly later to ensure we can get our staff team safely into school and you can travel when the roads are a bit quieter. It is important that we keep our phone lines open for staff to con-tact us so please avoid phoning to check whether we are open. Once the children do get in it is important that they come fully kitted out with gloves, hats, scarves, wellies and a change of shoes and socks/tights so that we can enjoy playing in the snow but then get ourselves warm and dry once we get back inside.

Christmas Hamper Raffle We have some delicious goodies for the Christmas Hamper Raffle but would very much like more donations if possible. It will certainly be worthwhile buying raffle tickets as there will be several hampers to win. We have taken a few photos to give you an idea of what can be won… Thank you very much for your support.

    Bures United FC

Zack (Y7), Noah (Y5), Jack (Y5) and Jamie (Y3) ran an incredible 5K in just under one hour to fundraise for equipment and playing kit for Bures United Football Club and for a local cancer charity. They hoped to

raise £500 but raised over £2,000 ! What stars! An excellent achievement. They should be very proud of themselves. I know lots of children from school are members of Bures United FC and enjoy both their training sessions and playing in games. Thanks to all involved in organising this.
