The Burbank Team is looking forward to seeing our families this month at parentteacher conferences. Children do best in school when parents and teachers work together. Research shows that students learn more, have higher grades, and have beƩer school aƩendance when parents are involved in their child’s educaƟon. That is why aƩending parentteacher conferences is so important. It is a great way for parents to become involved and stay involved throughout the school year. ParentTeacher conferences are a good way to meet your child’s teacher and learn about your child’s academic performance, as well as the teacher’s expectaƟons. If you know what is expected in the classroom, you can more easily address any issue that comes up as your child moves through the school year. By aƩending conferences, you also send a posiƟve message to your child that school is important. Keep in mind that you are an equal partner at the conference. If you have quesƟons or observaƟons, the conference is a good Ɵme to share them with your child’s teacher. Do not forget to share what you know about your child. Your informaƟon helps the teacher beƩer understand and teach your child. Just a reminder… The fall weather can be so unpredictable and due to the weather changes, I would like to remind everyone to make sure that your child is dressed appropriately for the condiƟons. We are sƟll taking the students outside for a recess break. ShoutOuts I would like to thank all of our Bobcat Families that came out to our Parent Workshops during the month of October. The teachers worked very hard in providing our families with informaƟon and resources that will ensure our students success. Your parƟcipaƟon is greatly appreciated! I would like to thank the PFC for all their hard work at this year’s Fun Fair. The turnout was GREAT and our students and families had a lot of fun. I would like to thank Mrs. Warunek for all her hard work in organizing the Mother/Son and Father/Daughter Costume Ball. What an amazing night of games, music, and lots of fun!! There will be NO SCHOOL on the following days: Monday, November 12 th in observance of Veterans Day. Monday, November 19 th will be a halfday of school for students. Tuesday November 20 th for ParentTeacher Conferences. Wednesday, November 21 st , Thursday November 22 nd , and Friday, November 23 rd in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday. I hope everyone enjoys the holiday with their family and friends. Important Dates: All Stars Volleyball Game on Saturday, November 3 rd at 10:00 am at Liberty Jr. High. Gree ngs, Bobcat Families!

The crisp November air is rustling the leaves off the branches and the autumnal scents are in the breeze! I love this weather! More than the weather, I love my new library! The Bobcats and I are enjoying every aspect of our new environment, par cularly, the laptops we have available to us on a daily basis!

This month, our Bobcat intermediate students will be showcasing their Kahoot interac ve games to the K‐2 students! One of my goals for our Bobcats is to transform them from stu‐dents to teachers as they become more familiar with the technology pla orms available to us. Ask your K‐2 student about the Kahoots they played in Literacy class that the 5‐6 graders prepared for them! Our 4th grade students have completed comic strips using a wonderful Storyboard pla orm…check those out, too!

Our Bobcat Literacy Team is con nuing to dazzle us with their book trailers each month! Check those out by visi ng my website h p://www.bsd111.org/olc/49 or by finding them on the District website!

We are so thankful for this beau ful building and mostly for those who occupy it on a daily basis—the kids, volunteers and staff. Wishing you a healthy and happy Thanksgiving with your families and friends!

Fondly,

Mrs. Kennedy

October really flew by! Here’s a  li le about what’s happening  in the classes  I work  in.   Kindergarteners are  learning  to  read!   They are  learning  their  “popcorn” words and making words with word  families (such  as  the  “at”  and  “am”  families).   Although we hope  that  students will  know  all  their  le ers  and sounds  very  soon,  that  doesn’t mean  that  they  can’t  start  reading.    I  reinforce  alphabet  and  sound knowledge while we make words with magnet le ers and read simple texts.  If you have a kindergarten‐er, please con nue to work with them at home.  You can hang up their popcorn words on a wall or door that can be referred to o en, or you can help them write  le ers or simple words by stretching out the sounds.   Don’t worry  if students can’t spell words conven onally yet –  just encourage their efforts (for example, “cat” can be wri en as “ct” or “kt” if students can’t hear the middle sound yet).  In 1st grade, I reinforce classroom skills with a group of students.  One way we prac ce sight words using “sight word scrambles” – sentences  that are cut up and have  to be put  together correctly again –  this means that students have to read the words mul ple  mes, as well as consider grammar and meaning.  We also work on phonics skills – mainly beginning blends and digraphs (ch, sh, wh, th) at this  me using picture  sorts  from  research‐based Words  Their Way.   We  are  also  star ng  some  guided  reading  and wri ng  ac vi es.    I  try  to  encourage  readers  to  use mul ple  strategies  using  posters  such  as  “Eagle Eye”  (look at  the picture),  “Lips  the Fish”  (make  the first  sound), or  “Stretchy Snake”  (stretch out  the sounds in the word).  While there are o en several words in books that they might not be able to sound out yet, using these strategies will help them to figure out these unknown words.  I am enjoying working with Mrs. Olsson’s 2nd graders for guided reading and pushing  in to 3rd grade for wri ng.   The third graders have been hard at work with a memory photo wri ng piece (using an ac on photograph of  themselves),  learning  to answer both basic  factual ques ons and  incorpora ng  sensory language as they  imagine themselves back  in  me.   They are also  learning about  the wri ng process – prewri ng, dra ing, revising, etc.  Finally, in my 4th grade enrichment group we have been studying what makes an effec ve adver sement.   We analyzed poli cal adver sements  from  the website “The Living Room Candidate,” that has presiden al commercials da ng back to 1952!  We’ve learned how adver se‐ments should appeal to emo ons/set a tone, persuade using facts and evidence, focus on central  issue(s), and develop an effec ve style incorpora ng sounds and images.  The hope is to  e this into persua‐sive reading and wri ng and to have students research and create a public service announcement on an important current topic of their choice.    Ms. Kleps

Winter is quickly approaching; please remember to bring you GYM SHOES if you wear boots to school. We are finishing up our volleyball unit where we are  incorpora ng the skills of bumping, se ng and serving. Students have been hard at work prac cing our skill cues in the gym to improve their skill levels. Students will also be par cipa ng in fall games and ac vi es including one of the class favorites GHOSTBUSTERS!!!    Next, we will be beginning the basketball unit where students will focus on dribbling, passing and shoo ng. As always students should display good sportsmanship, teamwork and a posi ve a tude.   Tommy Makuch and Amy Marek

Flu Season Information

November marks the time of year we set aside for celebrating with family and friends the things we are

thankful for. It is also the time of year considered “Flu season” in the United States which can begin as

early as October and last as late as May. See facts below from the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and

Prevention) to stay healthy this flu season:

An annual seasonal flu vaccine (either the flu shot or the nasal spray flu vaccine) is the best way to reduce the chances that you will get seasonal flu and spread it to others. When more people get vaccinated against the flu, less flu can spread through that community.

Generally speaking, everyone 6 months of age and older should get a flu vaccine every season.

Get vaccinated early, it takes about two weeks after vaccination for antibodies to develop in the body and provide protection against influenza virus infection which is why it’s better to get vaccinated early in the fall before the flu season really gets under way.

Flu vaccination can help protect people who are at greater risk of getting seriously ill from flu, like older adults, people with chronic health conditions and young children (especially infants younger than 6 months old who are too young to get vaccinated).

Flu vaccines are offered in many locations, including doctor’s offices, clinics, health departments, pharmacies and more. Stickney Township Public Health offers free flu vaccines to all BSD111 students, call today for more information (708) 424-9200.

The single best way to protect against the flu is to get vaccinated each year.

Strep Season is here!

Here are some signs and symptoms to look for at home:

Symptoms usually begin 2-3 days after contact, and the degree of illness can vary from child to child. Although you can’t always tell by looking, there is a somewhat characteristic appearance to strep throat.

You can suspect strep most strongly if: (1) The tonsils are beefy red (2) The uvula is red and swollen (the fleshy part at the back of the throat that hangs down like a raindrop) (3) There are big lymph nodes in the neck and under the chin.

The child may also talk as if he or she has a hot potato in the back of the throat.

Interestingly, symptoms that tend NOT to be associated with strep throat are: stuffy nose, cough, and laryngitis. (These suggest another cause such as a cold or allergy).

Each week, we have been  introducing new popcorn words. As your child is reading or is being read to at home, encourage  them  to  iden fy or point out  the popcorn  words.  The  stack  of  words  is  growing  so don’t  forget  to prac ce and  sign  to  show you prac‐ced  the popcorn words every night! Our first pop‐

In math, we  have  been working  on  iden fying  and coun ng  the numbers 1‐10, greater  than and  fewer than, and sor ng objects into groups. We also count to  100  daily  by  1’s  and  students  should  be  able  to count to 25 on their own.

Wri ng  is underway! We have  started with  labeling and  are  moving  on  to  prompted  sentence  wri ng using popcorn words.

that there  is not  just one way to solve a math prob‐lem. We  understand  that  these  strategies may  be new to you, as they are some mes for us, however, the students seem to really enjoy finding all the ways to  solve  these  problems.  It’s  really  exci ng  to  see that glimmer  in their eyes when they find a strategy that works  for  them.  Should  you  feel  lost with  the math  series,  please  feel  free  to  let  us  know,  we would be happy to show or explain any of the mate‐rial to you.

In Reading, we will be  focusing on  reading strategies  such  as  visualiza on  and finding  answers to ques ons by  looking  in  the  text. We will also be learning  to  iden fy  sequence  of  events,  character traits, and cause/effect within fic on and nonfic on text.  Students  should  be  reading  20 minutes  each night  and  reflec ng on  their  reading  either  in  their reading  journals  or  on  their  reading  logs.  The  only way students will get be er with reading  is  to keep reading.

Happy November! This year  is  really flying by and we are working so hard  in 4th grade. This month we will have our Parent/Teacher Conferences. We cannot wait  to sit down with you and fill you  in on how  the year has been going. Please con nue  to encourage your child  to  read at home every night and prac ce their mul plica on facts. This will help  them  to  be more  prepared  for  everything we  have been doing in reading and math!

In  reading,  we  have  been  focusing  on  different reading strategies and skills. Some of those skills are cause and effect, problem and solu on, main idea, etc. We have been  reading  so many  different  short  stories  to  prac ce these skills! Also, we have really been focusing on vocabu‐lary  in 4th grade. Please ask your child about some of  the vocabulary words and phrases  that they have been  learn‐ing!

In math, we have also been working  really hard! Not only has  your  child been working hard  in  their math workbooks, but they also have been working on some awe‐some websites. Please encourage your child to go on their math websites at home. They have all of their log in’s and passwords so they are ready to go!

Kindergarten: We have been learning: Students have just begun learning that music can be different dynam-ics (volume). Loud (forte) or soft (piano) We are singing songs with different dynamic levels to re-enforce this concept. Yippee!! We just had our first visual assessment. Students will be given a study guide to help them practice. This test will be on note names and rhythmic note names/values We will begin to learn and perform ostinatos and play the boom whackers to accompany a folk song. The students are also singing a lot of songs that have the AB form. That is a song that has a verse and a refrain and is structured so that they alter-nate. What are we learning?

4th Grade: We have been learning: Students have been review their note/rests and learning some new ones. They are also working on identifying notes on the staff in prep-aration for Recorder Karate. Recorders should be coming in within the next two weeks. We are also learning a Folk Song called Turn the Glasses Over, and learning a partner circle dance to accompany the song. Students are starting our World Music Unit. To kick off this unit, stu-dents were giving a Family Interview Sheet. Students will be “traveling” to other countries and learning about their culture, music, land, language, history and other interesting facts. As we finish each country will be completing our passports. Songs we have learned or are working on: Turn the Glasses Over

5th Grade: We have been learning: About the Baroque Period in music. The composer we have stud-ied so far is J.S. Bach. We have learned about his country of birth and about the styles of music he loved to write. We will soon lis-ten to some of his major compositions and study in more detail the form of these songs. We will then move onto George Handel. After completing the Baroque Period, we will play on various instru-ments excerpts from their compositions. Each unit (composer) has a fun sheet that accompanies the fact sheet. These will be given to the students to complete and turn in. It is important for students to turn in all papers on time and com-pleted to the BEST of their ability. In preparation for piano, the students are reviewing the notes (rhythmically and by note name). As soon as students are com-fortable with reading the notes on the staff and clapping simple rhythms, we will then transfer that knowledge to simple songs on the piano keyboard. Students have also been learning about folk songs. We have learned that folk songs are very old and until recently have only been passed down orally (by singing them) Songs that we have learned or are working on: Grandma Grunts

We are currently working on a folk song, Tideo in preparation for learning/performing sixteenth notes. Along with singing Tideo, we have added body percussion to accompany this song and will soon be learning a partner circle dance that goes along to the song. As soon as we are comfortable with clapping our new rhythmic notes, we will begin our Drumming Unit. This consists of Bucket Drumming where students perform by themselves on buckets (using them like a drum) to perform rhythmic songs that increase in difficulty. Also, in our Drumming Unit the students will be perform-ing in ensembles a three part rhythmic piece. Each person will be playing a different rhythm, however these rhythms fit to-gether to form a accompaniment that goes along with the song Yankee Doodle. We have also begun our study on the History of Rock and Roll. We will be starting our first chapter, How Rock and Roll Began Songs that we have learned or are working on: Tideo
