G'day

The first weekend in May was a busy one with both the Redlands Country Music Festival and the Bunda-berg Club Social. Three juniors and one senior mem-ber from the Bundaberg club competed at the Red-lands festival. Our members represented the club extremely well with wins and placings in many sections. Once again The Redlands Modern Country Music Club put on a great festival with a very laid back friendly atmosphere. The competition was at a high standard in-cluding artists from Redlands, Twin Rivers, Garden City, Homestead, and Broxburn. It’s was fantastic to see so many different clubs supporting this festival.

I would like to thank all the people who stepped up and helped with the Bundaberg club social this month. Due to the Redlands Festival, a few of the regular volunteers were absent however in true team spirit the social went ahead as scheduled which was great to see.

Practice nights have been well attended over the last few weeks with a number of new faces and some great new talent. I would like to welcome all the new members to our club. I can’t think of too many other genres of music where one can join a community group with fellow singers and mu-sicians. Country music clubs are a great place to develop your skills and pass on encouragement to others.

On that note – Why did the scarecrow win the award for the best country song? Because he was outstanding in his field.

Hope you all have a great month.

Regards

Kane

UPDATE

At the last club meeting it was decided to relax the re-quirement to practice your songs for the two practices prior to a Social. This was originally to enable the band to know your songs, however more often that not the band at the practices can be quite different than the band on the Sunday so it doesn’t really serve it’s purpose, however we encourage all our members to practice as often as they can with whichever band is play-ing.

Audio technology 101 tip 4

GETTING THE MIX RIGHT

Just as with Foldback , get-ting a good FOH mix will depend on gear, speaker type and placement, venue acoustics and most of all a good ear. However there a few basics tools to use to shape and sculpt your sound.

EQUALISATION

With EQ, less is always best. If the music sounds too boomy, isolate the cause and re-duce the bass, if too muddy, it is most proba-bly too much mid frequencies somewhere, and similarly with high frequencies. Music covers almost the full range of hearing frequencies from bass to treble, and a good mix has a good blend across the whole range.

PANNING

When there are multiple instruments, and es-pecially when there two or more the same (acoustic guitars for example) pan them across the stereo spectrum as they appear on stage.. This creates a more natural sound, and everything is not cramped up and competing to come out the centre (think of water through a pipe)– different instruments will have their own space and it will be a much clearer mix.

MEMBER PROFILE

ROD & SANDY BRYANT

Rod was born in Bundaberg and Sandy in Gayndah, Qld. They met in 1966 and married in Emerald Qld in 1970. Rod, a third generation Railway man and Sandy a Qld. Registered Midwife, later settling in Bun-daberg in 1973.

Rod’s early musical expertise was gained in the field of Brass over a period of 22 years with the Gayndah and the Bundaberg Municipal Brass Bands, play-ing Cornet and Tuba. He was awarded Life Membership of the Municipal Band for 20 years service and participation in Qld. Band Championships.

Rod’s grandfather, Charles Clinton, was the Founder of the Bundaberg Boys’ Brass Band in the 1940’s. Many familiar local identities were his students.

During the late 60’s and early 70’s Rod became adept at Saxophone, Drums and Guitar while playing in various dance bands from central Queensland to the coast. By the early to late 80’s during his association with the Bundaberg Country Music Club, he had outstanding successes on the Festival circuit in numerous categories as a Guitar Vocalist. In 1987 he was awarded Overall Performer at Pioneer Village, Redcliffe, Redlands and Nanango and rounded off the year’s achievements as an Overall Finalist in the Qld. Champion of Champions, also winning Champion Senior Duet with daughter Lisa, an ac-complished junior performer.

Since the late 80’s, Rod has judged, compared, and appeared at numerous Country Music Festivals, sharing his knowledge and experience, nurturing many young performers, with several having gone on to successful careers in the Music Industry while Sandy worked behind the scenes Scrutineering. In those days Calculators and adding machines were the tools to tally scores. Some memorable moments were, Jondaryan Woolshed, Miles, Roma and the Caves Rockhampton and by far the Bundy Easter Roundup 1991 was the largest ever, involving 415 Talent Quest, plus 53 prejudged Songwriters and 8

Caves Rockhampton and by far the Bundy Easter Roundup 1991 was the largest ever, involving 415 Talent Quest entrants, plus 53 prejudged Songwriters and 8 half hour Club Shows. An extra stage was run for half a day to cope.

In May 2007, Rod was one of 9 Queenslanders honoured with names added to the Rock of Recognition at the Rockhampton Heritage Village, for their contribution to the Country Music Industry.

Rod has produced 10 CD’s and in recent years merged into the Muster circuit, with appearances at Boondooma Station, Millmerran Camp Oven Cookout, the Clubs Bundy Aussie Muster and Murgon. Professional entertainment is winding down for Rod in favour of his enjoyment of entertaining for various charity and community groups with a variety of entertainment.

A lot of Clubs and Festivals were young back in the early 80’s. Sandy collected var-ious information and formulated a Festival Organizing Guide for a group meeting in June 1986 of which she still has her original copy. She was involved in Fundraising for the Club’s first music Equipment. Lamington Drives, Cake Stalls, Fashion Pa-rades, and organizing very popular Minor Art Unions. She was recognized for her efforts when presented with the Unsung Heroes Award at the Civic Centre by founding member, Evelyn Bury for dedication and hard work in support of the Club. As a Newsletter Editor in the early days, Sandy started a private collection of News-letters and Festival Programs which document the full history of the Bundaberg Country Music Club Inc. since 1983.

In 2015, the Qld Country Music Champion of Champions Association presented Sandy with the Jim Mitchell Outstanding Achievement Award for her contribution to the Country Music Community.

This husband and wife team have been very actively involved in the Club for many years in various positions, particularly in the first decade and from 2011 to 2017 as President/ Secretary & Festival and Muster Coordinators and are proud of their Life Membership and achievements knowing the Bundaberg Country Music Club’s fu-ture is assured with fresh energy, from the next generations of Country Music per-formers.

Will Gray

With two talented musicians, Kane and Paula Gray for parents, it was never going to be long before their son Will started treading the boards and pursuing music. At 11 years of age, Will has now been singing and playing guitar for around 3 years and has competed in a number of music festivals in-cluding Redlands, Bundaberg, Broxburn and Homestead. Most recently being overall Winner

of Juvenile section of the 2018 Redlands Country Music Festival. Will is a big fan of country music and some of his idols include Keith Urban, Lee Kernaghan and Adam Brand. Will enjoys hanging out with the other Bundy junior club members and looks forward to attending many more club festivals including his first Tamworth festival in 2019. One day he hopes to attend the CMAA college and write his own songs.

Pentatonic Scales

Scales are the building blocks of music, and an understanding of dif-ferent types and positions is essential for any guitar player.

As the name suggests the pentatonic scale is made up of 5 notes (penta meaning five). They can be major scales, minor scales, blues scales, just to name a few. This month we will look at the Major pen-tatonic scale which comprises the 1st, 2nd,3rd, 5th and 6th notes from the major scale. For the key of ‘G’ this would be G,A,B,D and E.

The beauty of this scale is that most notes fit over the major chords from the key, so when soloing it’s very easy to find yourself on a compatible note.

The ‘G’ major pentatonic scale can be played in a variety of positions. Figure 1 below shows the open position, and figure 2 shows the horizontal position moving up the neck. Practise it forwards and backwards, incorporating some slides, hammer-ons and pull-offs and pretty soon you’ll have that country twang.

These patterns can be moved up and down the neck depending on the ‘key’. For example start pattern 2 up two frets on ‘A’ and you have ‘A’ major pentatonic, down two frets and it’s ‘F’ major pentatonic and so on.

Long before alt-country became fashionable, there were a band

of brave pioneers who saw the future… (Flying Emus) were

searching for a style of music and lyrical content which, a dec-

ade later, in the hands of people like Kasey Chambers, Shane

Nicholson and Troy Cassar-Daley, would make country music

an integral part – not an alien music for rural aficionados – of

the broader Australian music landscape.”

During the 1980s Sydney’s Flying Emus took the Australian music scene by storm. Forming in

Sydney with the intention of playing a new form of country music, they wrote songs about

modern Australia – flood, drought, love and city life – and combined a wide range of musical

influences, from Bluegrass and Folk to Pop and Western Swing.

ARTIST PROFILE

The Flying Emus mainstay consisted of Mike Kerin on fiddle, Ian Simpson on banjo and gui-tar, John Kane on guitar and mandolin, Genni Kane lead vocals and guitar. Other members of the band included Hanuman Dass on percussion , Michael Vidale on bass. The band line up also included Malcolm Wakeford on percussion and Graham Thompson on bass.

The Flying Emus were one of Australia’s leading bluegrass bands from the late 1980′s. Sev-eral of the band members played in the Slim Dusty band and the Emus were formed during a six-year period when Slim Dusty had stopped touring.

I had the good fortune to see and meet The Flying Emus in Tara, Qld in the late 80’s, and from what I remember it was an awesome show.
