Directly followingHigK^-Stifiool graduation he went to Navy boot-camp as a member of the Reserves.Three days after returning from camp he was involved in a collision with a 28,000,pound dump truck and hovered near death for several weeks. The Lord had plansfor this then Christless life and spared it. Jim went on to attend the Universityof Oregon and it was while a student there, that he came to know the Lord. Shortly, after coming to Christ Jim traveled throughout Europe for three months studying thepeople and the cultures. He moved to Seattle and went into Insurance sales andmanagement. A promising career was developing when he and Sandy gave their livesto specialized Christian service during Wi-Ne-Ma Week of Missions in August of 19^9In September of that year Jim enrolled full-time at Puget Sound College of theBible where he completed his undergraduate study. Both Jim and Sandy spent thesummer of 1972 in Brazil as missionary yj^Bis...of the Bible College. He wasassociate minister at Issaquah Christian Church for a yecir and then pastored therefrom July, 1971 until July, 1973 when he and Sandy began to concentrate on raisingfunds to return to Brazil.

She also has reached Jimior standingat Puget Sound College of the Bible, Sandy is now busy with her responsibilitiesas house-wife and mother, including the many opportunities of service that are joysof one who is married to a missionary.

What things influenced you to become a missionary? (Jim)In brief, after my conversion in I966, I began to seek my place of

sea^vice, I came to realize that Christ wanted more than just my occasionalparticipation in Church activities, I was maarried to Sandy in I968, whileI was working in the Insurance business in Seattle. WA, We joined a localChristian congai^egation (Gareenwood Charistian Chuarch) and immediately fell underthe foaxseful influence of Dick and Cay Ewing, They weare foirmer missionaal.esto Biazil and in addition to their active a?oll at Ga:enwood they headed up theMission Department at Puget Sound College of the Bible,

Soon I became chaiaanan of the Mission's Committee, a job Dick washappy to give up. His schedule was plenty full anyway. We then began takingevening coiaarses at the Bible College in Missions, We got excited about Missionsand soon when I had the oppoaliunity to staart a new office in Bellingham, about80 miles noalih, I took the oppoartunity to move theare and work with the new BroadwayChal-stian Chuaxjh as well. We settled down and even bought a home. However, our stay was something less than lengthy. After only tha:^e months of residencywe attended Wi-Ne-Ma week of Missions on the Oregon Coast, There, in answer tothe pa:ayea?s of many, Sandy and I said, "We'll go wheare you want us to go dearLo3:xi", and that tiaamed out to be Bible College for thrree yeaa:s and then on toBrazil,

    Dear Friends of Christ:

I Love the Lord, because He hears my prayers and answers them.He bends down and listens, I will pray as long as I breath! Psalms 116:1-2

It is great to know we are in His will and that He is guidingsituation, no matter how disasterous it may appear to us, that all wxllwork together for good, because we love Hiral

About the time you were reading our last prayer-letter I was climbing into bed, where I was to spend the next^five weeks. While in Brasiliaduring the last of July both Mistie and I began to show symptoms of Bpa-_titis. Upon returning to Uberlandia the disease was confirmed. Mistie,

--^'eing much younger, had a light case which required only co^inement athome! The ^ease is more serious for adults and I needed total bed rest.

During the first week of August, Sandy put a call through to her Vimat Wi-Ne-Ma Week of Missions and the word was spread and prayers began togo up on our behalf. The next day I had Improved miraculously and my app-etite returned. We thank God for the power of prayer and our many concernedbrothers and sisters in Christ.

Things are beginning to get back to normal but only slowly. beengiven the okay to resume normal activities as long as I do not get yi^y My resistance and stamina are not great after five weeks in bed, Mistieturned around, after her round with Hepatitis and was down with a col ora week, (would you believe?) she is now recovering from Chicken Pox! We .prayed for patience "Thank you Lord for the lesson!" He has blo^sodus through these trying times. We have been drawing together as a familyin Him.

We thank God for our wonderful co-workers ~ the Scates* and Sturgeon's, i/They have been so willing to help us through the past difficult weeks.

Several folks have requested we chare some specif aeeds-that we have,,both spiritual and physical; we will share these in "LnisT-etter,

Greetings in the Eternal Name of Jesus I

~We thank God that through no merit of our own but as a result of His Son's selfless act upon the cross, we are included in that kingdom without end. V/e praythat all'who read this letter will share the same great joy we know as we cele-

'bra^ethe birth of Christ our Lord.

"I'am happy to report that the. Hepatitis is history. I even got in a few games: of . tennis last week without any problem. Praise the Lord! Our family is allwell now and doing fine. We do suffer a little from the heat which is in the80's and 90's every day with fairly high humidity. Many of the women here carryumbrellas to shade themselves from the sun. It is a good idea since the sun is

-ee-d^ntenso. It's difficult to find shade "when "the "sun is-directly overhead.We-try to walk from tree to tree on our way to and from the school. I carriedan umbrella' once but soom discovered that men are supposed to tough it out inthe sun. Then I discovered that if I walked with Mistie or Sandy I could holdthe umbrella to shield them and sort of sneak a little shade for myself.

.About,a month ago Harry, Jim, Orquido, myself, and four other Christian menbegan a ^^mimstry to the men,...of the^ City Jail. Every Saturday morning at6:00 we meet for prayer, and in the afternoon we meet with the prisonersto get to know them and to share our faith in Christ, During the first eightweeks we are showing a series of "Moody Bible Science"films in Portuguese and.Jihen breaking into small groups for discussion. Perhaps some of you rememberthe beaut^ully wrapped pen which we had with our display items. It had myname and Sandy's embroidered into the design. Two years ago when we visitedUberlandia I went to the prison several times and made friends with one of theprisoners, Joao Sabastao made the pen as a present. He and twelve other menin prison were baptized the day after we left here. I have renewed my friendshipwith Joao through the meetings. His five year sentence will be up in just a fewmonths. I pray that he will continue to serve the Lord when he returns to hisfamily and the many trials that will face him on the outside.
