Prof Ian Plimer ‘The Greens are not Environmentalists’

An evaluation of ideological electricity shows that it is unsustainable. The answer is certainly not blowing in the wind. The amount of energy embedded in steel pylons, concrete footings, blades, wiring, magnets, land clearing and roads is more than a wind pylon would ever generate in its working life. Wind farms cannot generate electricity in a gentle zephyr or a gale, cannot operate continuously and optimistically operate at 20% of nameplate capacity.

Wind farms have the life of a parasite because they freeload themselves onto existing grids paid by conventional efficient energy, need subsidies and drain electricity from the grid when it is too cold. Wind turbines don’t run on wind, they run on subsidies. From the taxpayer.

A single 1,000 megawatt wind farm produces at least 7 million tonnes of carbon dioxide in component construction and concrete. Almost 100,000 truckloads of concrete are required just for the footings. Maintenance by diesel-powered vehicles only adds to emissions. Wind farms need 24/7 backup from carbon dioxide emitting coal-fired power stations. Wind farms actually increase human emissions of carbon dioxide. The planet is only green because of carbon dioxide.

A wind farm using 660 kilowatt generators requires 7,600 generators at 20% efficiency to produce 1,000 megawatts. At $2,000 per kilowatt installation, this would cost $10 billion. This is ten times the cost of a 1,000 megawatt reliable clean coal-fired generator and twice the cost of a reliable nuclear 1,000 megawatt generator.

The environmental effects of wind farms are devastating. Construction of wind farms in rural areas results in a decline in residents’ mental and physical health, decreased property values and community disharmony. A recent study showed hearing loss for people experiencing low frequency noise.

In the UK renewable energy costs, principally from wind, create fuel poverty for 2.4 million folk. In the 2012-2013 UK winter, there were an additional 35,000 deaths. This translates as 6 sick, elderly or vulnerable people killed every year for each installed wind turbine.

At 20% efficiency, 1,000 megawatts of delivered electricity requires about 800 square kilometres of cleared land. A nuclear or coal-fired power station requires up to 60 hectares of cleared land. Habitats are destroyed by land clearing to reduce turbulence, generator fires are common and the resultant grass and bushfires that cannot be water bombed as wind pylons are a flight hazard.

In Spain, at least 18 million birds are slaughtered annually by wind turbine blades. Bird deaths in Germany are more than 300 per turbine and in Sweden almost 900 per turbine. German turbines kill more than 200,000 bats per year and in the US turbines kill some 2.8 million bats. Not to worry. Greens feel morally superior because they think that wind farms emit less carbon dioxide into the atmosphere and hence are saving the planet. They are certainly saving the planet from birds and bats yet climate will continue to do what it always does: change. If a nuclear- or coal-fired electricity generator damaged the environment as much as wind farms, there would be an outcry.

Wind farms are meant to be a contribution to prevent human-induced global warming resulting from carbon dioxide emissions. However, patient people have been waiting for three decades for the evidence showing human emissions of carbon dioxide drive climate change. The evidence is still missing in action.

The same calculations can be made for solar power. The amount of embedded energy in the metal, concrete, glass and roads is far greater than can ever be produced in a solar farm’s life. Construction of solar panels leaves toxic chemicals in someone else’s backyard. The amount of carbon dioxide released in manufacture and maintenance is greater than the saving and coal-fired generators need to be on standby all the time because solar power is not continuous. Solar power has an efficiency of about 10% and, until the laws of physics are changed, this cannot be improved.

Biofuels make even a larger dent on the environment. Increased land clearing, food shortages and food costs and carbon dioxide emissions are the norm for alcohol production. It seems such a waste to burn alcohol in a car rather than the human body. Greens must be very pleased that the 4,000 megawatt Drax power station in Yorkshire is changing from coal to wood burning. Some 70,000 tonnes of wood will be burned each day. Clear felling of forests in North Carolina, rail transport, pelletising, ship loading, 5,000 km of ship transport, unloading and train transport does not sound very environmentally friendly and results in huge carbon dioxide emissions from diesel and bunker fuels. The EU has deemed that carbon dioxide emitted from wood burning is recycled by plants yet carbon dioxide emitted from fossil fuel burning is dangerous.

Why are the Greens silent about the environmental damage of wind, solar and biofuel electricity generation? Wind power is unreliable, uneconomic and environmentally damaging. No wind farm could provide mains power without generous subsidies, increased electricity charges and horrendous damage to the environment. Few jurisdictions have plans for disassembling a wind farm after its useful life. Defunct wind farms should remain on the skyline as a reminder to future generations of our environmental ecocide and a memorial to stupidity resulting from caving into irrational green pressure.

Emeritus Professor Ian Plimer is a man of many parts, some of which still work. His latest book is ‘Not for greens ‘(Connor Court, 2014).

Erik Vandenberg presented a brief talk on the history, overview and update of our new Sustainable Communities Cambodia project. In the wake of the hugely successful work done in Bossala and Kroa Boa by Gerhard and co, Rithy Lay identified a group of villages in the North who were suffering the same plight as those people had been prior to the work which has been done there. They visited Bossala & Kroa Boa. The reception they received was truly amazing. Saw first-hand the success of the water tanks. Where previously numbers of up to 10 people a year had been dying from water borne contaminants, in the year gone by only 1 person had died. Result of project = 10 lives saved per year and the health and well being of all is substantially improved! Jan/Feb during lunch with Rithy Lay and some others here in Brighton, learned of a group of villages in a situation very much like Bossala/Kroa Boa had been prior to the project work. Knowing of the success of this project, Erik decided to fly to Cambodia and survey the situation for himself. With Rithy still in Melbourne, and Erik needed a translator, so he brought with him the English Lecturer from one of the leading Universities in Siem Reap who was able to translate and document the facts and figures. Some issues similar but some also different. Much larger population spread out over much larger area - Dry season: Some water (contaminated), evidently people here were not suffering arsenic poisoning - Prevalent diharreal and intestinal illnesses - No sanitation, people/animals bathing/defecating in same water they used for drinking Men and boys >10 away in Thailand.Intent of visit - #1 Pilot implementation of Biosand filter solution for safe drinking water #2 Supply some “MoonLights” #3 Carry out further research #4 Begin building social media audience #5 Photographic and video stock for use and to assist film crew learning about scenery / different weather and lighting conditions on location.

Did they achieve what they wanted? Definitely and more!l 50 Moon Lights l 5x Moulds for casting concrete biosand filter casings l Taught villagers how to construct the filters, with 41 successfully completed l Further research l Medical centre supplies l Meetings Re: De-mining l District Governor agreement.

Sustainability: l 50 Families now have solar powered light in the evenings l Men now able to build biosand filters themselves l 41 Filters capable of supplying clean drinking water.

Economic Sustainability: l Families paying less than $4 for a biosand filter l Greater ownership l More men can stay in the village.

Further needs:l Clean water solutions for nearly 4000 people, combination of cleaning ancient well, filtration and rainwater harvesting, plan to be fine tuned further l Irrigation for around 100 Hectares of dry farmland l Cleaning of overgrown dams to be used for fish farming l Installation of sanitation facilities (i.e. outdoor toilets) l Supply 4x additional beds for medical centre l Work with government agencies in arranging land mine clearing for additional 100 hectares of farmland l Preparation of cleared land and setup of irrigation to allow farming l Donation of first seeds to kick start agriculture program l Bicycles for children to enable higher school attendance rates.

Erik asks us whether or not we have Facebook, to share the following link with our network of Family, Friends & Acquaintances, asking them to ‘Like’ the page and in turn ask their networks to ‘Like’ it. In doing so, regardless of financial or physical contributions, you’ve already made a positive contribution to this project.

:PRESIDENT S REPORT

Presented by President Bill Howley Presented by Daryl Forge

• Pres Bill welcomed everyone to the meeting and introduced the top table comprising

Chairman PP Ian Mence, speaker Prof Ian Plimer, secretary Daryl Forge and Sgt Geoff Shaw who was to do the sergeant’s session but due to a full schedule last week it was cancelled. Bill then welcomed guests - Anthony Capello, David and Ian Groves, former member Richard Payne and Dr John Sherman. Bill also welcomed Gerhard Sommer who hadn’t been well and Peter Henderson who hadn’t been at the meetings for a while.

• Pres Bill mentioned the previous week’s AGM and how it was good to see a reasonable turn up of Members. There were more than he thought would turn up so that was pleasing he said. Earlier last week the special preview film night ‘My Old Lady’ was held at Southbank studios and Bill acknowledged PP Robert Ward for arranging the venue and Geoff Cunningham for organising the event. He said he was a great fun night and the movie was more enjoyable than he thought it would be.

• Pres Bill then announced that not only would we hear from Prof Plimer but also Erik Vandenberg would talk to us about Sustainable Communities in Cambodia.

• Norm Thomas: Rotary Youth in Sailing will be in February next year so it doesn’t clash with the Great Australia Day Swim and about 6 or 7 kids have already shown interest from Rotary Clubs in the country. RC of Nth Brighton is involved again and Norm is looking for people to house these young people and would like to hear from anyone who can help accommodate them for 2 nights in mid February. Dates will need to be confirmed at this stage.

• Geoff Cunningham: The Christmas Lunch - this year it’s at the Savoy Hotel on Sunday 7 December starting at 12 noon. There will be entertainment and the cost will be $55 a head which is heavily subsidised by the Club. Ring Geoff to make sure of a booking. Should be lots of fun and lots of Christmas cheer.

It was the Hacker’s Spring BBQ day and 13 Hackers played in the morning 9 holes. We welcomed Peter Sherman who we have not seen in a long while and it was good to see David Grodski one of our no so regulars get his name on the honor board for the 1st time sharing the day’s Handicap Honors with Bill Howley. Jim Moore won the Pregame Putting by a whisker from David Lee who won Off the Stick, Long Drive and Nearest The Pin. Arthur Hubbard’s drive was miles longer than David Lee’s but it missed the fairway. Talking of Arthur, Venus was in a good mood today and no one was enticed into the water. Rather Venus was in a teasing mood letting Ivan Vojlay’s chip stop just 30mm from the hole and then James Tidsall’s putt stop 50mm from the hole. And then at midday 25 plus Hackers and Wives turned out to our BBQ at Dendy Park - the threatening weather held off and another successful social function was enjoyed by all. Captain Ian Cole presented trophies for our 3 competitions so far in this Hacker’s year to winners Jim Moore, Arthur Hubbard and Daryl Forge and the Runners up Ivan Vojlay, Bill Howley and Ron Stark. The Tin money subsidized the beautiful foods, there was a fun chipping completion and Pres Bill Howley thanked Ivan Vojlay and his wife Judy for their significant contribution in making the occasion such a success. Ivan and Judy carefully selected the meats and they garnished and marinated the steaks they had the sausages and chicken wings specially cooked off site and delivered hot . They arrived first, they set the place up, they brought the condiments, plates, cutlery etc. They did it all and so all Hackers thank Ivan and Judy again for their superb contribution making it happen and happen so well. Capt Ian Cole

On Monday 17 November Julie Avery and Keiran Cromie and staff celebrated their 45th birthday with invited guests at the West Brighton Club. Many RCB Club Members and wives were present at this gala event. Superb finger food was served and for entertainment we had a presentation from three lovely ladies with a Latin dance routine followed by the Can Can. Several speakers got up including our own PP Geoff McGeary who delivered the speech to end all speeches. The Club congratulates Julie, Keiran and Brighton Travelworld on their wonderful achievement.

Chris Tuck was in town and caught up with a few Rotarians at a local restaurant last Sunday night.

Seems to be doing the Movember thing but went a bit extra!

The raffle was run by PP Brett Parkin with barrel girl ‘Maxine’ Martin. The winners of a bottle of red wine were: 1. PP Barry Morris 2. Bob Challis 3. George Jerzyk
