Landscape Series Book No. 8 entitled A ChangingWorld Challenges for Landscape Research.

Position statement I have seen IALE transform from a classic soci -ety with a unique world-wide theme - LandscapeEcology - into a multi-facetted professional societythat promotes new and challenging spatially relatedconcepts. Because of this rich scienti c tradition,Landscape Ecologists offer great ideas to shape futurelandscapes in a sustainable way. As President of IALEI would like to enhance the pro le of the Society bystrengthening our leading role in providing future

oriented landscape concepts. In order to increaseour visibility we need to increase membership andwork towards larger continental chapters with well-established formal structures and meetings. This is anecessary step to gain momentum in an increasinglyglobalized world with other Societies offering similarthemes. At the same time regional solutions shouldbe promoted in regional workshops and conferences. This amalgamation of regional, continental and globalchapters, each with different perspectives towards sol -ving common problems, is what makes IALE unique.

    Secretary-General

2011-2015Thomas C. EdwardsUS Geological Sur -vey and Utah StateUniversity, Utah,USA

BiographyProf. Thomas Ed -wards currently is aSenior Research Eco -logist with the U.S.Geological Survey and Professor in the Departmentof Wildland Resources, Utah State University. Heteaches graduate level classes in The Design and Ana -lysis of Ecological Research, and Topics in SpatialEcology. Thomas Edwards' current research interestsinclude bioregional conservation planning, and thedevelopment of methods for assessing and monitoringbiological diversity at large landscape scales. Theseefforts include (i) a European-based effort of the jointeffects of climate and land change on biodiveristy in

western Europe, (ii) climate change effects on conifersof western North America, and (iii) impacts of urbandisturbance fronts in regions of high urban growthand development. He was Co-Chair of the 2009 USIALE Annual Meeting, Snowbird, Utah, and currentlyserves as the Secretary-General (Interim) for the IALEInternational Executive Committee.

Position Statement I view the position of Secretary-General as a nexusbetween the IALE Executive Committee, and thevarious IALE membership groups found around theworld. In addition to maintaining and keeping trackof the details associated with the IALE EC, such asmeeting notes, I would like to see the position workmore closely with the EC to increase communicationamong all IALE Chapters.

scales, be it more short-term such as human-inducedland change or longer-term as related to changingclimates. Human societies have been responding

to environmental changes (e.g., climate, drought)through multiple pathways, including collapse, migration, but also with creative invention throughtechnological solutions. Human responses to changemay in turn alter feedbacks between climate, ecolo -gical and social systems, producing a complex webof multidirectional connections in time and space. Iwill work to help IALE become the world-recognizedSociety that will enhance and encourage a diversity of approaches in the conceptualization and applicationof ecosystem services. Such social-ecological systemperspective represents the integration of the social/political and the ecological scales, and it emphasizesthe view that social and ecological systems are infact linked, and that the delineation between the twois arti cial and arbitrary.

Vice-President2011-2015Jean Paul MetzgerUniversity of So Paulo,

He has supervised 16 M.Sc. dissertations, 7doctoraltheses and 9 post-doctoral projects. Dr. Metzger isfounder and past-president of the Brazilian Chapter of the International Association for Landscape Ecology(IALE-BR), and organized the rst Latin AmericaIALE Congress in 2009. He is currently member of the editorial boards of Landscape Ecology, BiologicalConservation, Biota Neotropica, and the BrazilianJournal of Nature Conservation, and is a past memberof the editorial board of Ecosystems.

Position Statement My main objective is to work with the IALE Exe -cutive Committee in order to strength LandscapeEcology teaching, research and application outsideits traditional axis of action (USA, Canada, Europeand Australia) and thus to promote the expansion of IALE activities to new regions, particularly to LatinAmerica. I will thus pursuit the main objectives of the IALE Latin American meeting of 2009: (i) toencourage research development and consolidationon Landscape Ecology in Latin America by approa -ching and integrating researchers; (ii) to facilitate

the creation of new IALE chapters in Latin America, establishing tools to integrate their actions; and (iii)to promote technical and scienti c exchange betweenNorthern and Southern researchers and educators.Additionally, I think that IALE can have a key-rolein disseminating Landscape Ecology principles byorganizing international summer schools with leadingresearches for graduate students and/or practitioners.
