I t takes more than a building to make a Kehila/synagogue congregation. Our exemplary honorees are the back-
bone of our Kehila. They work tirelessly and selflessly to bring order, continuity and joy to all of us—in addition
to reaching out to the community to tout the benefits of joining East Midwood Jewish Center. Whether working
in the office managing important services, helping whenever needed, singing or conducting classes—these are
people we can count on. It is our pleasure to honor and praise them. Their goodness enables us all to be better people.
Let’s all show our appreciation by attending our 92nd Annual Spring Fundraising Gala!

CELEBRATE ISRAEL PARADE: JUNE 5, 2016
Israel, a small country about the size of NJ, is bursting with
energy, has an amazing variety of climates and geograph-
ical contrasts – mountains, valleys and deserts – and is
filled with an incredible variety of flora and fauna. Every-
where you go, there are ultra-modern cities with towering
skyscrapers alongside ancient, Biblical cities. With more
than 8.4 million people from over 30 regions and countries
in the world, Israel is a model of diversity. Israelis are
warm and friendly, happy to have coffee with you and then
invite you home for dinner! Celebrated as the Start-Up
Nation, Israelis think out of the box to solve problems and
are at the cutting edge of science, technology and inven-
tion. Israel speaks to our history and to our hearts. In Israel,
there is so much to see, so much to do, and so much to feel
and embrace.

Thoughts from Rabbi Matt Carl
The month of Nisan is supposed to be about birth. The “main event,” of course, is Pesach and its
Seders, when we celebrate our redemption and our birth as a people. But you could say the real birth
of our people (complete with water-breaking imagery and everything!) is Shvi’i Shel Pesach, the end
of the holiday, when we commemorate K’riyat Yam Suf, the splitting of the sea. We in the northern
hemisphere are fortunate that our season of birth and rebirth coincides with that of nature. Spring
(called Aviv in Hebrew, though that word in the Bible is more specifically used as the name of the
month we today call Nisan) is the time rivers and lakes thaw, animals (including some of us!) come
out of hibernation, and flowers start to bloom.
As a kid in California, the phrase “April showers bring May flowers” didn’t mean much to me be-
cause it rarely rained in April. Though it may be slow in coming, this particular spring seems to me
to have already brought more colorful and beautiful flowers than most years. I guess this spring rep-
resents the cliché: the cold weather is obviously difficult to enjoy, but gives us a special prize for
sticking it out. Or could it be something different altogether? That the flowers are the same every
year, but this year I need them more; that the colors seem much brighter, the patterns more beautiful,
because of the dull, gray background against which they stand this year? Either way, it seems to be
the opposite of Pesach, wherein we celebrate with family, great food and lots of it, and then often
wonder what to do with ourselves for another six days. For many, Hol ha-Mo’ed (the intermediate
days) and Shvi’i Shel Pesach can be anticlimactic or even an afterthought.
I would suggest we see the whole Pesach season in a different light. Maybe it’s not about redemption
at all, but the potential for redemption. We think of the Seder as telling us a story about the past—but
we spend as much, or more, time during it speaking of the present and future. The Haggadah gives us
instructions: teach your children (in different ways), drink, ask a lot of questions, drink, mention the
special foods and eat them, drink, pray, drink again…it’s more a set of instructions than a history les-
son. All year long, our Tradition offers wisdom and instruction to engage with God and each other.
But this time of year, it goes out of its way to tell us we’re not there quite yet. In this sense, the days
after the Seder aren’t anticlimactic, but the opposite: a chance to start living the message of the Hag-
gadah. It’s not a negative message, but one of potential: we have a journey to embark on, we have
work to do, but together we have potential for redemption. Next year in Jerusalem!

MAY ANNIVERSARIES JUNE ANNIVERSARIES

The EMJC Teen program is nearing its final meetings for this program year. Our final events will be on Saturdays May 14th and 28th, 8-10 PM, our usual time. We have been busy building relationships and engaging in dialogue in this last month.
So what have we been up to? Our teens have been experimenting with improvisation, sharing personal stories and exploring some important issues. We recently had a discussion of traditions and identity in the Jewish community and the wider world communi-ty. We took a dive into the education system, imagined alternatives to the common core, and valued the knowledge we gain from each other in conversation with peers.
Finally, you can check out pics of the fun we had with our Master Chef mystery boxes. Each team was given an identical box of ingredients and kitchenware to create the perfect dish in only 60 minutes! The competition was close, and though a winner was chosen, we all enjoyed eating together at the table with our guest judges, Randy and Audrey.
Shavuot (Feast of Weeks) commemorates the revelation of the Torah
on Mt. Sinai to the Jewish people, and occurs on the 50th day after
the 49 days of counting the Omer. We will celebrate Shavuot on
June 11, 12 and 13. Shavuot is one of the three biblically based pil-
grimage holidays known as the Shalosh Regalim. It is associated
with the grain harvest in the Torah.
Shavuot is observed by abstaining from work and attending syna-
gogue services. A few special readings are recited: a liturgical poem
called Akdamut, which emphasizes the greatness of God; the Book
of Ruth, because the story highlights one woman’s choice to join the
Jewish people and accept the Torah; and the Ten Commandments, in
honor of the revelation of the Torah. It is also customary to study
Torah all night. This practice is called Tikkun Leil Shavuot.
Traditional holiday meals on Shavuot center around dairy foods.
Milk is considered to be a symbol of the Torah, which nourishes the
people directly, as milk does for a baby. Popular Shavuot foods in-
clude cheesecake, blintzes, and kugels. Some Sephardic Jews make a
seven-layered bread called siete cielos (seven heavens), which is
supposed to represent Mt. Sinai.
Check emjc.org for updates on our Shavuot services and events!
On Sunday, April 17, 2016, Shira Felberbaum, LMSW,
EMJC’s Social Worker from The Jewish Board, gathered
with dedicated collaborators, Cantor Sam Levine and Edu-
cation Director Audrey Korelstein, as well as with several
actively engaged EMJC congregants and others from the
community for a Pesach bereavement program called
“Coping with The Empty Seat at the Seder Table.” We sat
in the beautifully renovated Bridal Suite at a round table
filled with delicious treats including wine and freshly baked
matzah drizzled in chocolate and caramel prepared by
Audrey and her Room J students. Together, we drew upon
themes of the holiday to do our very best to emotionally
prepare for this holiday that would unfortunately be without
one or more of our loved ones and also identifying ways to
honor them during this Pesach season. We sang beautiful
melodies prepared by Cantor Sam. We read inspiring po-
ems selected by Audrey. We discussed insightful words of
Torah provided by Rabbi Matt Carl. Mostly, we shared
memories of our loved ones and what resonated for us, as
we reflected on the songs, poems, and Torah passages that
we read aloud to one another.

TSEDEK Youth Group from Boston Shares Their Joy With Us in April
We enjoyed a great deal of beautiful music in five languages (English, Hebrew, Spanish, Haitian Creole, and Turk-
ish) sung by children, teens, and adults at our annual Music of our Faiths Concert, held on April 10, 2016 at Our
Lady of Refuge Roman Catholic Church. Cantor Sam Levine ended the concert by telling us the story of the crea-
tion of Irving Berlin's "God Bless America" and we concluded by singing it in Yiddish and English. For nearly two
decades the Interfaith Committee of Our Lady of Refuge, East Midwood Jewish Center and the Church of the Na-
tivity has worked to help educate our community about our culture and faith traditions.
MUSIC OF OUR FAITHS
Our Lady of Refuge Youth Choir Cantor Sam Levine leading EMJC Choir
Tsedek’s Youth Choir is a program unlike any other. Composed of 18 teenagers between the ages of 13-18, the Youth Choir has
traveled throughout Israel, as well as parts of France, United Kingdom, Italy, and most recently the United States. Professionally
directed and choreographed, the choir is known for singing songs of Jewish past with modern Israeli influences.
Tsedek encourages children to channel their past negative experiences through positive outlets such as music. The Youth Choir
helps children by utilizing musical therapy as a platform to redirect anger and really shine through with song and dance.

As usual, Room J was busy in advance of Passover. With so few weeks between Purim and Passover, there’s al-ways a challenge making space for all the kinds of learn-ing the kids experience. In teacher Moran’s Hebrew classroom, students continued to make great progress on reading, writing, and speaking Hebrew. To learn about Passover, this year’s focus included learning about the Exodus story from a series of questions that fostered thoughtful, all-ages conversations. So many parts of the story are disturbing to kids – the tenth plague, for exam-ple, nearly rivals the binding of Isaac in its unsettling de-tails – so this is another piece of Torah that must be pre-sented with lots of sensitivity. Even the sacrifice of ani-mals can be upsetting for kids, as was evidenced during Rabbi Carl’s class visit to talk about what’s on a seder plate. To make sure we struck the right balance between
students exclaiming “They did what?!” and students proudly sharing their “Here’s what I think” moments, some “big” questions students wrestled with included imagining what holy must feel like (sparked by the burn-ing bush) and a reflection about what kids would want to take with them if they needed to leave their homes in a hurry (inspired by the Israelites’ quick departure from Egypt). Many parents joined us to hear students share their “I would take” responses; some student replies are shared here, too. Amid all this, we somehow managed to sing and sing and sing again the Four Questions and make our annual caramel chocolate matzah. Now on to learning about the years in the desert. If prior years are any indica-tion, I expect someone to bring up using a GPS device.

Sisterhood Shabbat, Lunch and Learn
MAY 14
Jay Greenfield will be reading from his acclaimed new novel “Max’s Diamonds” pub-
lished by Chickadee Prince books, after our Sisterhood Shabbat on MAY 14, 2016.
Please call us at 718-338-3800 to make your reservations for the Lunch and Learn
and put our always meaningful Sisterhood Shabbat date on your calendar
Sisterhood hopes that all of our members and friends experi-
enced a happy and healthy Pesach. We are all enjoying the
warmth and beauty of spring as we reflect on our current ac-
tivities.
On April 6, we had our 92nd Annual Twilight Dinner, which
is our largest fundraiser of the year. It was our pleasure to
have Joanne Honigman as our honoree this year. Over 100
people gathered to pay tribute to Joanne, partake of a deli-
cious dinner, and dance to the music provided by Ricky Penn.
Special highlights of the evening included a beautiful, origi-
nal song by Joanne’s husband Howard, and a song written by
Roz Pomerantz to the tune of “Younger than Springtime.”
Many valuable raffle prizes were won by our guests. Heartfelt
thanks go to everyone who attended the dinner and purchased
raffle tickets. Much appreciation goes to Stephanie Kaner,
who was responsible for the beautiful dinner journal.
May 14th is the date of our upcoming Sisterhood Shabbat.
Many parts of the service will be led by our Sisterhood mem-
bers. Beautiful voices that are usually heard from our seats
will be heard from the Bimah on that day. After services, we
are sponsoring a special Kiddush lunch for all to enjoy. Our
special guest is Jay Greenfield who is one of our congre-
gant’s, Steven Drachman’s colleague. Jay will discuss his
new Holocaust themed novel, Max’s Diamonds. Jay is a not-
ed trial attorney turned author whose debut novel has been
well reviewed. As Tracy Fischer of “Foreward Reviews”
commented: “An incredibly engaging and thought-provoking
story of one man haunted by the grief of his past. Max’s Dia-
monds, an excellent new work of fiction by Jay Greenfield,
traces the life of a man hiding his past and a traumatic child-
hood….Themes of religious persecution, the consequences of
lifelong guilt, and the difficulties of familial relationship and
relationships created on a base of lies reside beneath the sur-
face of this work, adding complexity as well as beauty.” Cop-
ies of the book will be available for browsing, borrowing and
purchasing. Please call the office at 718-338-3800 to place
your book order and make reservations for the luncheon.
We look forward to seeing everyone there!

Letter from Israel By Ethel & Irwin Weintraub
In case you can’t place the names, we are Ethel and Irwin Weintraub, who were members of EMJC from 1999 to 2010. Ir-win (a Brooklyn native) and I met and married in Beersheva, Israel in 1978. In 1983, we moved back to the USA so Irwin could do a PhD in Wisconsin. We then moved to New Jersey, where he was the Agriculture Librarian at Rutgers for ten years. In 1999, Irwin became a Science Reference Librarian at Brooklyn College. It took us a few months to discover that EMJC was only a few blocks from our apartment on East 17th Street. Since we had belonged to Conservative synagogues in New Jersey and Madison, Wisconsin, it seemed natural to explore EMJC. After a few weeks, we liked it so much, that we joined and were members until 2010, when we returned to Israel once again. While we were here, I worked as a social worker in a long- and short-term nursing home in Williamsburg until my retire-ment in mid-2007. It was Hasidic owned, but not all the residents were Jewish. I had previously worked in child welfare and mental health in both the U.S. and Israel, but chose to work in nursing homes when we moved to Brooklyn. When Irwin retired from library work in 2010, we decided to come back here to live in the apartment we had bought after we married. We rejoined our former Conservative (Masorti) synagogue, which is about a mile away from our home. There are Americans in that shule, but only two or three other English-speaking families in our neighborhood. But we have made friends with some of our Israeli neighbors and this is a convenient area, being near the center of town. It is actually the "Alef" neighborhood, probably the first area built up outside the old city here. And there are three local buses that stop with-in a few blocks of our apt. In the summer it is obvious that most of the people around us do not observe the Sabbath strictly. Irwin has been able to conduct a few auctions in Beersheva and in Jerusalem for Hadassah conventions or our immigrants’ group and he would love to do another one at EMJC, if it coincided with one of our future visits. It can get very noisy here on Thursday and Friday nights, and I can recall one night, just before Erev Yom Kippur a few years ago when there were a large number of very noisy young people in the cement field right near our apartment. I went out and yelled at them in Hebrew that it was the night before Kol Nidre and could they please quite down, as they were dis-turbing other people in the neighborhood. Most of the young people found another place to socialize, or just went home. I think they respect us (to them we are the American couple) a little more since then. But I'm glad they did not get violent which they could have. About a year ago, in a different neighborhood, a young man who had a baby, came home from work at about 2:00 am and found the noise so great that he and his wife could not get the baby to sleep. So he went down to yell at the group that was making noise. Apparently they were drunk or high on something illegal, and they stabbed him to death!! Since that time, the police have been better about coming out when it is too noisy late at night. Now when we call and complain if someone is playing music loud around midnight or otherwise being extremely noisy, the police will tell you not to go out yourself, that they will come and do the talking. They usually do arrive pretty quickly and the noise quiets down. I can say that it is fascinating living in Israel, but not always easy. The police are under the main administration in Jerusalem, which means that cities do not have their own local police departments. There are two major police stations in Beersheva. We don’t own a car, because Irwin does not wish to drive here and I have never applied for an Israeli license. There is really no need to own a car, because cars, insurance and maintenance are all very expensive. Anyway the supermarket is just five blocks away, the intercity bus and train services are very good, and our local buses run until Friday afternoon and late on Saturday night. Besides, there are several taxi companies in Beersheva and there is a standard 25 shekels (about eight dol-lars) within the city. Irwin walks to services on Saturday morning, but I take a taxi. If it is not too cold or extremely hot or raining, we usually walk home with American friends who have lived here for over 30 years. In October we plan to visit my brother who lives near San Francisco and hope to spend a week or two in NYC on the way back. We plan to get to EMJC on at least one Shabbat and will let Toby know when we are coming. We miss all of EMJC, and all our friends there, and our wonderful Cantor and Mrs. Levine and Rabbi and Mrs. Kass. We know you have a new young rabbi and maybe we will have a chance to meet him. We send our love to one and all of those we knew when we lived in Brooklyn! I can't wait to see EMJC again! Best wishes from Israel, Ethel
