No. 341 ALL DUES DUE APRIL 1st June 2013

The sky was a cobalt blue; the air still crisp and refreshing; the day promising to be a balmy 82 degrees--

just another beautiful California day [which is what we pay our incredibly high taxes for]. But, the scene

before me belied the true significance of what was actually unfolding before my eyes.

Underneath that cobalt sky, collectors stealthily approached the welcoming arms of the Heritage Inn,

site of this year’s magnificent AMCAL convention. Amidst the crisp and refreshing morning air, those

same collectors warily eyed one another as they unloaded their cars and trucks or emerged from the

comforting cocoons of their motel rooms. Although there were a few novices to be seen here and there, the

veterans knew what lay ahead...

Yes, they knew. It was a jungle out there--survival of the fittest, and each veteran intended to be the

victor at the end of the day. They were the hunters...and I was one of them. The prey? Covers beyond the

imagination of ordinary mortals!

I lightly threaded my way to the freebie table, surreptitiously checking out my competition, first to the

right, then to the left. The two elderly ladies at three o’clock would be a minimal threat, at best, I

judged...but Duane Johnk was on my left--he could be a serious problem. A diversion! That’s what I

needed.

“FIRE! FIRE! I SMELL SMOKE!” I watched as everyone stampeded for the parking lot. That gave me a

five-minute head start, I guessed--it would be more than enough.

Well, it could have happened like that, but, in actuality, the unqualified friendliness and generosity of the

attendees quickly disarmed my competitive nature. It immediately became apparent that these good people

had traveled from all over the state, the country, and even from England not just to consume covers, but to

enjoy the greatest hobby in the world and the fellowship of their peers.

Some 60 people officially registered, and we were all rather stunned by the steady 3-day stream of walk-

ins. The latter was due solely to the Sacramento Bee’s April 23rd 2-page article on Loren Moore and the

upcoming convention. We signed up 7 new members and had 4 members reinstated. [And that’s a perfect

example of the importance of getting publicity in place for hobby events...and in this case, we have Loren

Moore to thank.] Chester Crill was kept constantly on the run, dealing with all the walk-ins and giving

estimates on the material they invariably brought in.

I sat for three days, manning the registration table while gloriously sifting through mounds of freebie

material—and I found a bunch, including a few very nice sets that I’ll be running in future bulletins.

Everyone else was just as busy.

There were three big auctions, one each day. Clem Pater was our auctioneer. I thought the final prices

for the lots were generally rather high, but that’s good for the sellers. Sometimes, at the end of an auction,

lots brought in by walk-ins would go on the block. Total $$ exceeded the last Roseville convention.

interested attendees.

It was a great convention, and we all, I’m sure, tip

our hats in appreciation of all the work put in by

everyone responsible, especially Loren Moore and

Chester and Cheryl Crill. Loren put in hundreds of

hours scanning covers, organizing auction lots, and

setting up the special auction web site. The Crills, I’m

certain, donated tons of covers for the events.

Next year’s convention will be sponsored by Angelus

Matchcover Club and will be in Southern California.

Was The Alamo Really The End of

The Line For Davy Crockett?

Is nothing sacred?!! We all know that Davy Crockett

went down fighting at the end of the 13-day siege of the

Alamo, wielding his rifle like a club before he fell near

the front doors of the former mission’s chapel on March

6, 1836. I, personally, know this is fact because I saw

Davy Crockett die this exact way decades ago on The

Wonderful World of Disney in the 1960s! Now, I ask you,

would Walt Disney lie?

Yet, a Mexican army officer’s 1840s eyewitness account

has surfaced that indicates Crockett never even died at the

Alamo. The diary of Lt. Col. Jose Enrique de la Pena

indicates that Crockett and half a dozen other Alamo

defenders actually surrendered, were taken before

General Santa Ana, and then tortured and brutally

executed. Most historians are accepting the diary as

authentic...and there have been other similar documents

that have surfaced over the years, as well....The next thing

you know, they’ll be telling us that George Washington

never chopped that cherry tree!

California’s Mission San Luis Rey

Mission San Luis Rey de Francia is a former Spanish mission in the present-day city of Oceanside,

California. The mission was founded on June 13, 1798 by Padre Fermín Lasuén, and was the eighteenth of

the Spanish missions established in California. Named for Saint Louis, the mission lent its name to the

Luiseño tribe of Mission Indians.

The current church, built in 1811, is the third church on this location. It is a National Historic Landmark,

for its pristine example of a Spanish mission church complex. Today the mission complex functions as a

parish church of the Diocese of San Diego as well as a museum and retreat center.

At its prime the Mission San Luis Rey's structures and services compound covered almost 950,400

acres , making it one of the largest of the missions, along with its agricultural land grant property beyond.

The first season's episodes of the Zorro TV series were filmed here in 1957. Walt Disney added a skull

and crossbones to the cemetery entrance. In 1998, Sir Gilbert Levine led members of the Los Angeles

Philharmonic and, with the special permission of His Holiness Pope John Paul II,

the ancient Cappella Giulia Choir of St. Peter's Basilica, in a series of concerts to

commemorate the 200th Anniversary of the founding of the mission. These

festival concerts constituted the first-ever visit of this 500 year-old choir to the

Western Hemisphere. The concerts were broadcast on NPR’s “Performance

Today”. In February 2013, a seismic retrofitting was completed.

Today, Mission San

Luis Rey de Francia is

a working mission,

cared for by the people

who belong to the

parish, with ongoing

restoration projects.

Mission San Luis Rey

has a Museum, Visitors

Center, gardens with
