Exciting debut of FIVB Grand Prix in Santo Domingo

Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, June 6, 2012 – United States and Dominican Republic, two teams already qualified to the 2012 London Olympic Games, are set to compete along with the sides of Germany and Chinese Taipei as the FIVB World Grand Prix gets underway in Santo Domingo from June 8 to 10.

This year, the tournament will visit 13 cities across nine countries offering fans a true volleyball feast on a global scale. The capital of Dominican Republic will host the event for the first time and full-house are expected during the three days of action at a refurbished arena located in the heart of the city’s centre.

USA, winner of the last two editions of the premier annual women’s competition, is currently ranked No. 1 in the FIVB World Rankings.

The Americans will be hoping to become just the second team in history to complete a hat-trick of titles, repeating Brazil’s feat from 2004 to 2006.

The No. 9 Dominican Republic, who twice have finished in eight place, are looking to improve from the twelfth spot they finished last year.

The No. 8 Germany, runner-ups at the last European Championship, have struggled in their last two times at the WGP finishing ninth in 2009 and 13th in 2011.

Chinese Taipei return after missing last year’s competition. The side have never finished higher than 12th in their three outings in the World Grand Prix so that will be their first target.

The Americans have an all-time 11-2 win-loss mark against Dominican Republic a team they saw off at the World Cup in consecutive sets (25-21, 25-19, 25-14) last November.

The Olympic silver medalists USA exhibit a 16-6 win-loss record in their face-to-face against Germany.

USA last played Germany during the 2011 FIVB World Cup last November with the European vice champions claiming the victory in straight sets (32-30, 25-19, 26-24).

The No. 1 world-ranked USA have played Chinese Taipei only twice collecting the triumph in both occasions including the one in Osaka, Japan during the 2006 FIVB World Championship by score of 25-15, 25-20, 25-21.

Dominican Republic and Germany have clashed on nine occasions, with the Germans prevailing five times. The NORCECA’s Caribbean team, however, scored thrilling five-set victories the last two times the sides were pitted together.

The Dominicans won 25-19, 22-25, 31-29, 16-25, 19-17 when the squads met in Gdynia, Poland during the 2010 World Grand Prix. More recently, they prevailed 30-28, 22-25, 25-14, 18-25, 15-12 at the FIVB 2011 World Cup in a match played at Okayama, Japan that saw Bethania De la Cruz establishing a tournament-record 42 points.

The Dominicans last time played Chinese Taipei during the 2007 FIVB World Grand Prix and succeeded against the home team 25-16, 25-20, 25-22 in Taipei.

Germany also only needed three sets to beat the Asian representative when they squared off at the 2010 FIVB World Grand Prix in Okayama. The final line read 25-19, 25-14, 25-19.
