Newsletter No. 6 Dominican Republic is the NORCECA U-20 Champion

MANAGUA, Nicaragua, August 26, 2012. – Dominican Republic won the gold medal after defeating Mexico by 3-1 (25-19, 25-21, 24-26, 25-11) at the NORCECA Women’s Junior Continental Championship on Sunday night at Managua’s “Polideportivo España”. This is the first title for Dominican Republic in the history of the competition with its seven previous editions. Dominicans have reached the gold match in the past four editions against USA. For Mexico this is their second silver medal. CUB 3 NCA 0 Cuba beat Nicaragua in straight sets 25-4, 25-8 and 25-10 to claim the fifth place. Sulian Matienzo had the highest score for the Cubans with 13 points, 11 of them in direct attacks, Anet Aflonso and Yalennis Diaz collected 8 apiece. Cuba finished with a 2-2 win-loss record, while Nicaragua registered 1-2. USA 3 CRC 0 USA captured the last ticket to the FIVB 2013 World Championship wining over Costa Rica by 3-0 (25-18 , 25-14 , 25-22) for the bronze medal. Costa Rica did well, in the first they tied it at 18 points and most of the third set they were up in the score but couldn’t keep it up. The top scorer for the Americans was Azariah Stahl with 11 points and Haleigh Washington scored 9. On the Costa Rican side, Angie Montero topped with 8 points. MANAGUA, Nicaragua, 26 de agosto, 2012.- República Dominicana ganó la medalla de oro venciendo a México 3-1 (25-19, 25-21, 24-26, 25-11) en el Campeonato Continental NORCECA Femenil Sub-20 la noche del domingo en el “Polideportivo España” de la ciudad de Managua. Este es el primer título para República Dominicana en la historia del torneo con siete ediciones previas. Las Dominicanas habían alcanzado la final en las últimas cuatro ediciones ante Estados Unidos. Para México esta es su segunda medalla de plata. CUB 3 NCA 0 Cuba derrotó a Nicaragua en sets seguidos 25-4, 25-8 y 25-10 llevándose el quinto lugar. Sulian Matienzo obtuvo el mayor número de anotaciones para las cubanas con 13 puntos, 11 de ataques directos, Anet Alfonso y Yalennis Díaz sumaron 8 cada una. Cuba finalizó con record de 2-2 en juegos ganados en tanto que Nicaragua registró 1-2. USA 3 CRC 0 Estados Unidos capturó el último boleto para el Campeonato Mundial 2013 de la FIVB venciendo a Costa Rica por 3-0 (25-18, 25-14, 25-22) por la medalla de bronce. Costa Rica lo hizo bien, en el primer set logró empatar a 18 puntos y durante la mayoría del tercer set se mantuvo arriba en el marcador pero no pudieron mantener el paso.
