LESSONS FROM CHARLESTON’S TRAGEDY

Perhaps the most striking thing about the aftermath of the mass murder in a black church in Charleston, South Carolina is the attitude of the victim’s families toward the killer. During Dylann Roof’s bail hearing, one by one, family members of the dead spoke through a television monitor in the corner of the courtroom to Mr. Roof who was watching from his cell. One by one the survivors, members of Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church, offered him forgiveness for making them motherless, snuffing out the life of a promising son, taking away a loving wife for good, bringing a grandmother’s life to an end. “You took something very precious away from me,” said Nadine Collier, daughter of 70-year-old Ethel Lance, her voice rising in anguish. “I will never talk to her ever again. I will never be able to hold her again. But I forgive you. And have mercy on your soul.”

~ Adventist Review ~

In the wake of the vote on women's ordination, please consider the following quote:

“The church may pass resolution upon resolution to put down all disagreement of opinions, but we cannot force the mind and will, and thus root out disagreement. These resolutions may conceal the discord but they cannot quench it and establish a perfect agreement. Nothing can perfect a perfect unity in the church but the spirit of Christlike forbearance. Satan can sow discord; Christ alone can harmonize the disagreeing elements. Then let every soul sit down in Christ's school and learn of Christ who declares Himself to be meek and lowly of heart; and Christ declares that if we learn of Him, then our worries will cease, and we shall find rest to our souls.” Manuscript Releases Vol. 15 MR no. 1158 - Biblical Counsel on Solving Church Difficulties.

As they testified to a faith that is not compromised by violence or grief, they reminded Mr. Roof that God can forgive too. “We welcomed you Wednesday night in our Bible study with open arms,” said Felicia Sanders, the mother of 26-year old Tywanza Sanders. “You have killed some of the most beautifulest people that I know,” she said in a quavering voice. “Every fiber in my body hurts, and I will never be the same. Tywanza Sanders is my son, but Tywanza was my hero. Tywanza was my hero. But as we say in Bible study, we enjoyed you. But may God have mercy on you.” The act of racial terrorism did the opposite of what was expected. If Roof intended to stir up a race war the Charleston church members were having none of it. Instead of riots, there was forgiveness. “I acknowledge that I am very angry,” said Bethane Middleton-Brown, sister of one of the victims, DePayne Middleton-Doctor. But “she taught me that we are the family that love built. We have no room for hating, so we have to forgive. I pray God on your soul.” What a statement! “No room for hating.” The Bible says we are to love our enemies, Mathew 5:44. This principle was clearly demonstrated by the families of the victims. Wouldn’t that solve the race problems we face? What if, everyone forgave each other? It is the spirit of Christ that forgives. Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do,” as he was hanging on the cross. What better demonstration of that spirit could there be than was seen and heard by Roof himself? Charleston is a lesson for the whole nation, even the whole world! Racial hatred has no place in America. It has no place in the Middle East. It has no place in Africa. It has no place, anywhere. Let the record of those courtroom testimonies be blazoned across the nation in living color. Let their words be repeated on the airwaves, the internet and in social media. If we want peace in our cities and on our streets, we don’t need Baltimores and Fergusons. We need Charlestons; not the murderous rampage, but the spirit of forgiveness. “We all have one thing in common. Our hearts are broken,” Charleston Mayor Joseph Riley Jr., told a crowd gathered in an arena to commemorate the victims. If “that young man thought he was going to divide this community with his racial hatred, we are here today and all across America to resoundingly say he measurably failed.” The enemy is not one race or another, for we are all of the same human brotherhood. We are all descendents of Adam. The real enemy is Satan who stirs up racial animosity.

Pastor Hal Mayer

Speaker / Director

Jesus said in Matthew 24:12 that in the last days “because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold.” The cold-blooded mass murder is a testimony to the truth of the Lord’s prophetic words. It is a potent reminder that Satan is still stirring it up; not just racial hatred, but hatred of all kinds. And he will continue to do so to the close of probation and even again at the end of the millennium. The Charleston victims, Bible students, demonstrated that love and forgiveness is also still around too, and that it is more powerful than revenge, more powerful than hatred, more powerful than pain. And that’s the biggest lesson to be learned from the tragedy in Charleston. Bible prophecy will certainly unfold. This earth is filled with pain, sorrow and hatred, which will increase until the close of time. Crimes almost too gruesome to mention happen all too often. Yet, we are advised in scripture: “and when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh.” Luke 21:28 Source Reference:

LESSONS OF WARNING FROM LUCIFER'S REBELLION July 16, 2015 Steve Wohlberg We are told that Satan made war against God in heaven and that he continues to make war upon God’s remnant people on earth (Rev. 12:7, 8, 17). Therefore, it makes sense to examine what happened in heaven long ago, so we can resist the devil’s assaults today.

LESSON ONE: WAR BROKE OUT IN HEAVEN Brothers and sisters, we are at war with Satan and need to “put on the full armor of God” that we “may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil” (Ephesians 6:11). God’s people will be defeated if they fail to realize that these are days of battle.

LESSON TWO: SATAN IS REBELLING AGAINST GOD “The history of the great conflict between good and evil, from the time it first began

~ ADvindicate ~

Page 7: Bulletin & Newshamilton-adventist.net/sdrc/bulletins/hamilton/2015/Hamilton-Bulleti… · Sabbath July 25th, 2015 ... Song Service 9:45 am Sabbath School 10:00 am Church Service 11:30

7

in heaven to the final overthrow of rebellion and the total eradication of sin, is also a demonstration of God's unchanging love" (Ellen White, Patriarchs and Prophets, 33). Don’t miss that key word, rebellion. It is critical to understand that we are fighting forces that are in rebellion against God’s love, His law, His will, and His ways.

LESSON THREE: REBELLION INITIATED BY AN INTELLIGENT AND HONORED ANGEL “Sin originated with him who, next to Christ, had been most honored of God and was highest in power and glory among the inhabitants of heaven” (White, 35). Therefore, we who are weak, fallen, and degenerate are NO MATCH for him who was once highest in power in heaven. Our only hope is to humbly rely on God and His word and “receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save [our] souls” (James 1:21). If we do, we will be “more than conquerors through Him [Jesus] who loved us” (Romans 8:37).

LESSON FOUR: SELF-EXALTATION LEADS TO REBELLION “Little by little Lucifer came to indulge the desire for self-exaltation … ‘Thine heart was lifted up’” (White, 35). Pride is insidious and those infected by it usually don’t recognize their own sin because it is hard to detect, especially in one’s own heart. It’s easy to think we are right, when in fact, we are wrong. Therefore, in order to discern our own pride, we need a standard with which to compare ourselves. That standard is God’s Word, His law, and especially, His loving character revealed in Jesus Christ. Only the Holy Spirit can show us our sin (see John 16:8).

LESSON FIVE: DISCONTENT WITH POSITION GIVEN BY GOD We are told that Lucifer was not content with his position and “though honored above the heavenly host, he ventured to covet homage due alone to the Creator” (White, 35). This was part of Lucifer’s sin. Though Lucifer was an angel, he wanted more. Likewise, our Creator has assigned each of us a position in His sight. We should be content with His will because God knows what is best.

LESSON SIX: LUCIFER DISPUTED AUTHORITY OF JESUS CHRIST Lucifer’s dispute against the supremacy and the authority of Jesus Christ “[impeached] the wisdom and love of the Creator”, and became “the purpose of this prince of angels” (White, 36). Sadly, Lucifer “was determined never again to acknowledge the authority of Christ” (White, 40-41). Practically speaking, we submit to Jesus Christ’s supremacy and authority when we submit to His word, the Bible. Jesus said, “If you continue in My word, then you are truly disciples of Mine” (NASB, John 8:31).

LESSON SEVEN: LUCIFER ATTACKS THE SIMPLE WORDS OF GOD “Everything that was simple he shrouded in mystery, and by artful perversion cast doubt upon the plainest statements of Jehovah” (White, 41). Therefore, it is essential that Seventh-day Adventists remain people of the Book. “God will have a people upon the earth to maintain the Bible, and the Bible only, as the standard of all doctrines and the basis of all reforms … Before accepting any doctrine or precept,

Page 8: Bulletin & Newshamilton-adventist.net/sdrc/bulletins/hamilton/2015/Hamilton-Bulleti… · Sabbath July 25th, 2015 ... Song Service 9:45 am Sabbath School 10:00 am Church Service 11:30

8

we should demand a plain ‘Thus saith the Lord’ in its support” (Ellen White, The Great Controversy, 595).

LESSON EIGHT: REBELLION OFTEN PRETENDS LOYALTY Rebellion against God often conceals itself under a pretense of loyalty to God. “While claiming for himself perfect loyalty to God, he [Satan] urged that changes in the order and laws of heaven were necessary for the stability of the divine government” (Ellen White, Patriarchs and Prophets, 38). “Satan had made it appear that he himself was seeking to promote the good of the universe” (White, 42). This is critical information. “I’m not rebelling,” states the rebel. Our only hope is that we must not be ignorant of his Satan’s devices (2 Corinthians 2:11).

LESSON NINE: EVEN PERFECT ANGELS WERE DECEIVED “Many of the angels were, however, blinded by Lucifer's deceptions … His power to deceive was very great” (White, 38,41). Think about it. If sinless, super-intelligent angels were deceived by “the bewildering sophistry by which rebellion would seek to justify itself” (White, 36), what chance do we have? Again, our only hope is in trusting God and His Word first and foremost. “It is written,” was Christ’s method of conquering the devil (see Matthew 4:1-11). This is our safeguard too.

LESSON TEN: LUCIFER SAID HE WAS DEFENDING THE ANGELS’ RIGHTS Satan positioned himself as defender of angelic rights. “Rejecting with disdain the arguments and entreaties of the loyal angels, he denounced them as deluded slaves. The preference shown to Christ he declared an act of injustice both to himself and to all the heavenly host, and announced that he would no longer submit to this invasion of his rights and theirs … The only course remaining for him and his followers, he said, was to assert their liberty, and gain by force the rights which had not been willingly accorded them” (White, 40).

LESSON ELEVEN: WAVERING ANGELS WERE WARNED Loyal angels “warned all [angels] to close their ears against Lucifer's deceptive reasoning, and urged him [Lucifer] and his followers to seek the presence of God without delay and confess the error of questioning His wisdom and authority” (White, 40). None of us — not even pastors, administrators or even those with doctorate degrees in theology — are a match for Lucifer’s mind. Therefore, some books should never be read and some people should never be reasoned with. At times, we should close our ears “to escape from the snare of the devil” (2 Timothy 2:26). One of Eve’s first mistakes was talking to the snake in the tree.

Suffer not yourselves to open the lids of a book that is questionable. There is a hellish fascination in the literature of Satan. It is the powerful battery by which he tears down a simple religious faith. Never feel that you are strong enough to read infidel books; for they contain a poison like that of asps … In reading them, you are inhaling the miasmas of hell. (Ellen White, Fundamentals of Christian Education, 93).

9

LESSON TWELVE: GOD BORE LONG BUT PRIDE RUINED LUCIFER Infinite wisdom showed Lucifer his error, but his pride ruined him. “In great mercy, according to His divine character, God bore long with Lucifer … such efforts as infinite love and wisdom only could devise, were made to convince him of his error … Lucifer was convinced that he was in the wrong … He nearly reached the decision to return, but pride forbade him" (Ellen White, Patriarchs and Prophets, 39). Friends, if God shows us our error, we must humble ourselves and forsake that error forever, no matter the sacrifice.

LESSON THIRTEEN: WHEN UNITY WAS IMPOSSIBLE When a third of the angels finally settled permanently on Lucifer’s side, unity with them was impossible because unity must be based on truth (see John 17:17,21). Paul asks us 2 Corinthians 6:14, "What communion does light have with darkness?" The obvious answer is none.

LESSON FOURTEEN: EVERY ONE IS A PARTICIPANT Once every angel became settled, either on God’s side, or on Lucifer’s side, war resulted, and every angel was involved. “And war broke out in heaven: Michael and his angels fought with the dragon; and the dragon and his angels fought” (Revelation 12:7). Significantly, it was not God alone against Lucifer and his comrades; but holy angels engaged in battle too. “Michael and his angels fought.” The same is true today. God’s people must decidedly resist every satanic attempt to undermine God’s remnant movement and His Three Angels’ Messages (Revelation 14:6-12). Neutrality is impossible. False charity is a mistake. We must actively stand for truth.

LESSON FIFTEEN: GOD’S PEOPLE EMPLOY GOD’S METHODS “God could employ only such means as were consistent with truth and righteousness. Satan could use what God could not — flattery and deceit” (White, 42). In our efforts to counter Satan’s falsehoods, we must practice the truth, speak the truth, live the truth, and reveal Jesus Christ’s love for sinners. Empowered by His pardoning grace, true commandment-keepers must love God, and their neighbors as themselves (Matthew 22:36-40). If we ourselves manifest hard-heartedness, coldness and pride, we reflect the devil, no matter what we profess. Then we too must repent, before it is too late. Remember, “The history of the great conflict between good and evil, from the time it first began in heaven to the final overthrow of rebellion and the total eradication of sin, is also a demonstration of God's unchanging love" (White, 33). Jesus wants us to reflect that love which led Him to sacrifice His very life for “the sins of the whole world” to save sinners (see John 3:16; 1 John 2:2).

THE LAST CAMPAIGN IS YET TO COME "The enemy is preparing for his last campaign against the church. He has so concealed himself from view that many can hardly believe that he exists, much less can they be convinced of his amazing activity and power. They have to a great extent forgotten his past record; and when he makes another advance move, they will not recognize him as their enemy, that old serpent, but they will consider him a friend, one who is doing a good work" (5T, 294). It already happened in heaven.

A Work of God's Appointment - No one is to strive to become a great manufacturer of

health foods, or to establish a monopoly in this business. Let no one seek to control the food

Those deceived by Lucifer thought the devil was their best friend. Such misguided confidence destroyed them. "Clad in the armor of Christ's righteousness, the church is to enter upon her final conflict" (Prophets and Kings, 725).

The signs of the times reveal that this “final conflict” is upon us. May God humble us, forgive us, purify us, clothe us in Christ’s righteousness, and then use us as polished instruments to lift Jesus and save souls, before earth’s last sunset.

He likes to sit in the late afternoon sun outside his home and smile at his wife, happy that the future feels secure.

Tembwe and his wife are living with HIV. Thankfully none of his children have the virus. He says, "On my worst days my body rejects food and water. Once, I could only stomach one tablespoon of water." His eyes are shadowed as he remembers the dark days early in his diagnosis.

Then Tembwe met a farming instructor from ADRA's farming program. Tembwe learned how good soil is something that can be nurtured through composting and inter-cropping. Tembwe also learned how to keep his food supply independent through saving his own seeds. Now Tembwe and his family are farming eight hectares, and this season he plans to harvest 4000kgs of maize. This harvest will be bagged up in 50kg sacks for sale at market. The thought puts a smile on his face.

Darkness Before Dawn by (E.G. White) Can The Dead Speak To Us? … (chapter 4, pages 19.2)

——————————

Can the Dead Speak to Us?

When they have been led to believe that the dead actually return to communicate with them, Satan causes those to appear who went into the grave unprepared. They claim to be happy in heaven and even to occupy exalted positions there, and thus the error is widely taught that no difference is made between the righteous and the wicked. The pretended visitants from the world of spirits sometimes utter cautions and warnings which prove to be correct. Then, as confidence is gained, they present doctrines that directly undermine faith in the Scriptures. With an appearance of deep interest in the well-being of their friends on earth, they insinuate the most dangerous errors. The fact that they state some truths, and are able at times to foretell future events, gives to their statements an appearance of reliability; and their false teachings are accepted by the multitudes as readily, and believed as implicitly, as if they were the most sacred truths of the Bible. The law of God is set aside, the Spirit of grace despised, the blood of the covenant counted an unholy thing. The spirits deny the deity of Christ and place even the Creator on a level with themselves. Thus under a new disguise the great rebel still carries on his warfare against God, begun in heaven and for nearly six thousand years continued upon the earth. {DD 19.2}

Focus On Jesus When your world crumbles all around you, don't focus on the crisis - focus on Jesus! As long as you focus on Him - you have nothing to worry about! This sinful world is full of roadblocks and pit falls, all orchestrated by Satan to keep you from the only one who can save you. But don’t let the devil deceive you for one moment! Whatever difficulties your day may bring, don't spend time regurgitating every depressing detail in your mind. Nor does it help to keep telling anyone who will listen, until the actual experience becomes so dismal, all just seems hopeless. This does nothing to fix your problem and it won’t make you feel any better either! Instead, Talk to God as earnestly as you would tell your best friend; and once you’ve shared your troubles, then relax, take a deep breath and trust God to take care of you. To Stand for Principle Despite Opposition

And I sent messengers unto them, saying, I am doing a great work, so that

I cannot come down: why should the work cease, whilst I leave it, and

come down to you?

Nehemiah 6:3

God has men in reserve, prepared to meet the demand, that His work may be

preserved from all contaminating influences. God will be honored and

glorified. When the divine Spirit impresses the mind of the man appointed by

God as fit for the work, he responds, saying, "Here am I; send me." . . .

Nehemiah showed himself to be a man whom God could use to put down false

principles and to restore heaven-born principles; and God honored him. The

Lord will use in His work men who are as true as steel to principle, who will

not be swayed by the sophistries of those who have lost their spiritual eyesight.

Nehemiah was chosen by God because he was willing to cooperate with the

Lord as a restorer. Falsehood and intrigue were used to pervert his integrity, but

he would not be bribed. He refused to be corrupted by the devices of

unprincipled men, who had been hired to do an evil work. He would not allow

them to intimidate him into following a cowardly course. When he saw wrong

principles being acted upon, he did not stand by as an onlooker, and by his

silence give consent. He did not leave the people to conclude that he was

standing on the wrong side. He took a firm, unyielding stand for the right. He

would not lend one jot of influence to the perversion of the principles that God

has established.

We shall meet with opposition of every description, as did the builders of the

walls of Jerusalem; but if we watch and pray, and work as they did, God will

fight our battles for us, and give us precious victories. . . . We should move

forward with unwavering confidence, believing that God will give to His truth

great and precious victories. . . . Relying upon Jesus, we shall carry a

convincing power with us that we have the truth.
