PENTECOSTPentecost commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles. This happened fifty daysafter the resurrection, on an ancient Jewish festival called, in the Pentateuch, the Feast of Weeks(2 Mc. 12:32) since, it was celebrated exactly seven weeks after the Passover. The Feast of Weekswas to the Jews only the conclusion of the harvest, in thanksgiving for which bread made from thenewly gathered wheat was presented to God as a sacrifice. In our Church, Pentecost also marks the beginning of the work and activity of the Holy Spirit. Before His departure, Jesus promised that He would not leave us orphans. He would send the

Paraclete, the Comforter, who would teach us all things. Thus, Pentecost is, in a certain way, the feast of theDescent of the Holy Spirit and the birthday of the Church. We celebrate the gift of the Holy Spirit that Jesus sent toHis apostles gathered in prayer. He gives us the same gift of His Spirit in Baptism and Confirmation. We havereceived the same gift that the apostles received on that first Pentecost Sunday. We pray that we may realize that theapostles did not have an advantage over us. We have the same gifts at our disposal. It is up to us how we will usethem. In our daily prayers we must always ask the Holy Spirit to guide us and empower us to use the gifts that Godhas given us. In this way our faith will become a vibrant part of our lives and our faith community will be one thatdraws others to Christ and His Church. This is what Jesus calls us to be. He calls us to be active participants in Hissaving work.

Epistle: A reading from the Acts of the Apostles. (2: 1- 11)

    : i i . (2: 2- 11)

When the day of Pentecost came it found themgathered in one place. Suddenly from up in the skythere came a noise like a strong, driving wind whichwas heard all through the house where they wereseated. Tongues as of fire appeared which parted andcame to rest on each of them. All were filled with theHoly Spirit. They began to express themselves inforeign tongues and make bold proclamation as theSpirit prompted them. Staying in Jerusalem at the timewere devout Jews of every nation under heaven. These heard the sound, and assembled in a largecrowd. They were much confused because each oneheard these men speaking his own language. Thewhole occurrence astonished them. They asked inutter amazement, Are not all of these men who arespeaking Galileans? How is it that each of us hearsthem in his native tongue? We are Parthians, Medes, and Elamites. We live in Mesopotamia, Judea andCappadocia, Pontus, the province of Asia, Phrygia andPamphylia, Egypt, and the regions of Libya aroundCyrene. There are even visitors from Rome -- all Jews,or those who have come over to Judaism; Cretans andArabs too. Yet each of us hears them speaking in hisown tongue about the marvels God as accomplished.
