    FROM THE PASTORS DESK

    Dear Parish Family,

Peace and all good! Well, are you ready for Christ-mas? Finished (or started) your Christmas shoppingyet? Are you sending out cards this year? Any bakinggoing on at your house? And how about the tree? Is

everything in order?Granted, theres still time, but some of us are wayahead of the game already. The smart shoppers andshrewd consumers among us bought their Christmascards and wrapping paper lastDecember. Others havetaken advantage of summer sales and stashed awaygifts early on. Still others were part of the now-infamous Black Friday stampede. But heaven help thelast-minute bargain hunter!

The readings this weekend make it very clear that weneed to be well-prepared spiritually for Christmas aswell. But the emphasis is not so much upon what wedo by ourselves as to what we allow God to do with

and for us. After all, in Advent the traffic goes in bothdirections: as we approach the Lord, we discover thatthe Lord is approaching us as well. In fact, the Lordcomes racing toward us, welcoming us into his Pres-ence and Love.

As part of our Advent preparation, the clear emphasisin this weeks readings is on humility. My soul pro-claims the greatness of the Lord, Mary exclaims in theresponsorial taken this time not from the psalms ofDavid, but from the gospel of Luke (1:46-55). For Hehas looked with favor upon His lowly servant. Marysconfident declaration is a proclamation of both Gods

greatness and of Gods grace in her life. Her words andspirit ring throughout Advent and are especially poign-ant in light of our celebrations in her honor: the Im-maculate Conception (December 8) and the feast ofOur Lady of Guadalupe (December 12).

Marys profession of faith in God segues into thisweekends Gospel from John (1:6-8;19-28). Like Mary,John the Baptist is a figure of true humility: He wasnot the light, but came to testify to the light. By hisown frank admission, the Baptizer is not the Lord andnot the prophet Elijah, but rather the voice of one cry-ing in the wilderness.

By the way, if the Gospel readings appear familiar this

weekend, its because it is. Basically, it echoes last Sun-days gospel reading from Mark (1:1-8). But the repe-tition of theme is both conscious and significant here.We are reminded and called again to the spirit of hu-mility. As the Cistercian monk and writer ThomasKeating reflects, Humility is the honest admission ofwhat and who we are. We are notGod, but we cer-tainly are Gods children, for example. True humilityhas nothing to do with humiliation. On the contrary: it

is freedom from self-deception, false pride, and de-structive self-abasement. True humility reminds us ofour total dependence upon God and opens us to re-ceive Him more deeply into our lives. Again, in truehumility, we happily admit that we are not so muchpreparing for Christmas as being prepared for Christand by Christ. The Christ who knows and loves us justas we are. And thats really Good News!

CATECHETICAL MINUTE - ROMAN MISSAL QUESTIONSMany questions are being asked now, that we are cele-

brating the Mass with the new translation of the RomanMissal. Every other week a question will be addressed andanswered (hopefully).

Question #1In the consecration we are now using the word chalice

instead ofcup as we did before. Why?

AnswerThere are two words for drinking vessel in Latin:

poculumis the generic term for any kind of drinkingvesseland is usually translated as cup. The Latin word calixmeaning chalice however is used more exclusively for avessel of communion, destined to be shared with otherdrinkers.*

In the Latin translation of the bible, the vulgate by St.Jerome, the Greek wordproterion in the words of consecra-tion translates as calix, as a communal dimension is present.Similarly, the texts of the Missal have always used calix(chalice) rather thanpoculum (cup) in thewords of insti-tution and consecration.

This decision is reinforced by the practice of certain prot-

estant reformers in intentionally removing the word chalicefrom their translations due to a perceived connection be-tween the word chalice, and the sacrificial nature of theMass.

*The importance of the communal dimension of the chal-ice is evident on the quick retraction by the Diocese of Phoe-nix on statements from their Liturgy Office concerning possi-ble restrictions on the reception of communion under bothspecies. In the United States, communion being receivedunder both species is the norm and to be celebrated assuch. Bill Bischoff, DCM

Parishioners and FriendsFrom Father David Gaa, ofm

Executive Director, Old Mission San Luis Rey, and

    Father Charles (Chuck Talley ofm),

Pastor, Mission San Luis Rey Parish

    December 8, 2011

    Feast of the Immaculate Conception

    of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Dear Members of our Mission and Parish Family,

Peace and all good! Over the past 2-3 years-- ever since

our arrival here at Old Mission San Luis Rey and Mission San

Luis Rey Parish-- we have been working to find ways in which

both entities could grow together to serve as a unified, evan-

gelizing presence of our Catholic Christian faith here in North

San Diego County. Many people are still unaware of the fact that Old Mission

San Luis Rey (OMSLR) and Mission San Luis Rey Parish

(MSLRP) are actually distinct and separate legal and organiza-

tional entities. The Old Mission consists of the historic Mis-

sion church, cemetery, retreat center, welcome center, and

gift shop. It is one entity and is operated under the auspices

of the Franciscan Friars of the Province of St. Barbara

(California). The Parish (MSLRP) includes the Serra Center,

the parish school (Old Mission Montessori School) is owned

and operated separately under the auspices of the Diocese of

San Diego. Both entities are staffed by the Franciscan friars.

Initially, both operations were a single entity, but the sepa-

rate organizations have developed over the past 40 years.

Sometimes that separation has involved unfortunate ten-

sions and conflicts, including differences in vision and style

between the Executive Director and the Pastor.

We view such divisions as harmful to our common goals

and vision and to the welcoming spirit of our Franciscan

identity. We also believe that such divisions may well persist

as long as both the Mission and Parish are administered

separately, since certain tensions are built into the structural

    differences between them.

Therefore, in cooperation with the Diocese of San Diego

and the Franciscan Friars, we have decided to embark upon

a feasibility study to explore the possibility of a potentialmerger of the Old Mission and the Parish into a single entity.

Starting in February, 2012, representatives of the various

interested parties will meet to consider the areas of fi-

nances, governance (canonical and civil), administrative and

management structures, personnel/transition issues, and apossible joint Master Planning effort. Our hope is to com-

plete the study with recommendations within a twelve-

month period. We want to explore in an in-depth and fo-

cused way the many and complex issues involved. We will

keep you informed of our work and will certainly make pub-

lic our recommendations. In the meantime, we ask for your

prayers and support as we continue in this process to dis-

cern the Lords will for us.

Thank you and God bless you,

    YEAR END PLANNING

If you have been reading the business section of either ofour local papers you have no doubt noticed that the year end

tax advice columns are starting to appear. The last quarter

of the year is the time to take the necessary actions to re-

duce that tax liability that looms just around the corner.

Many folks choose charitable giving as the avenue to reduce

those taxes. If this is your plan please do not forget our par-

ish. If you need to make a mandatory IRA withdrawal this

can be done directly to the church and tax can be avoided.

We know that there are many demands on your resources,

and many charitable organizations asking for your gift, just

remember that what you give to your church is used right

here. It may be for food for the needy, education for our

youth, or services to other sectors of our community, but it

    stays here.

If there is a special need that you would like your gift to

address just say so with a note and we will honor your wish.

Thank you for all that you do and all that you give. Our par-

ish is stronger and better able to cope with local needs be-

    cause of your gifts.

degradacin.

dad? Ests enviando tarjetas este ao? Vas a hornear pan

    nosotros necesitamos estar bien-preparados espiritualmen-

consiente y significante. Nosotros somos recordados y lla-

mados de nuevo al espritu de humildad. Como el monje

Cisterciense y escritor Thomas Keating refleja,

desafortunadas tensiones y conflictos, incluyendo diferen-

    Prroco.

Nosotros vemos tal divisiones dainas a nuestras metas

(cannico y civil), administrativo y estructura administrati-

Nosotros queremos explorar a
