The Baptism of the Lord January 12, 2014

In today’s gospel from Matthew we read that John protests that he should not be one to bap-tize Jesus. “I am not wor-thy to untie the thongs of his sandals,” he says, “you should be baptizing me.” This is true. We might even wonder why the sinless Jesus even needs to receive John’s baptism of re-pentance. “What does Jesus have to repent for?” we might ask. Matthew’s answer is that Jesus has nothing to repent for, nothing to wash away. So why be baptized at all then? And why by John? This is a theological question that might seem very complicated. To answer the question the Church tries to help us understand that what we call the pas-chal mystery includes Jesus’ Incarnation, life, death, and resurrection , its all one whole movement of the divine mystery with the hope that we might be joined fully to God’s divinity. The baptism of Jesus is a particular part of this whole, it’s a way of sub-mission, first to John and the second submission is his acceptance of not just our human flesh (as in the Incarnation) but of our very neediness, our thirst for repentance and forgiveness and acceptance. In this way the baptism is another sign of God being Em-manuel, with us fully and completely. As a part of the whole paschal mystery then, the baptism that we hear in the Gospel today is another way that the Creator of the universe says to us: “To be with you I give everything. I give all to you, all my divinity, everything. Nothing will keep you from me. The question we are faced with today, then, as we stand in the doorway between the season of the In-carnation and the Ordinary season of Jesus’ active ministry, is the same question we are always faced with: will we accept the self-Gift of such a humble God? When I am honest, my own answer is both yes and no. The excitement, the yes, comes because accept-ing God really means accepting that the words spo-ken to Jesus today are spoken to us: we are God’s beloved children, with whom He is well pleased. This is who we are at root, beloved children. Reflection by Sr. Lucille Martinez, OLVM

NEXT FIESTA MEETING: Wednesday, January 23

6:30pm in office meeting room EVERYONE WELCOME

OUR LADY’S GUILD NEWS: Next meeting: Thursday, January 16th at 6:00pm in the Office Meeting Room. We will have a represen-tative from CLUTTER CLEANERS with sugges-tions on how to clean out our clutter! The new railing on the altar steps has been installed and the existing railings on the back wall have been painted to match the new one. The railings were greatly needed to assist the Eucharistic Ministers who were having difficulty on the steps. This pro-ject was made possible from the funds raised by the Guild. We thank the support given to the Guild at their fundraisers. It not too soon to start thinking about our fabulous Valentine Bake Sale on February 9th. We are al-ways amazed at our talented bakers who are always so generous each year. Again, thank you and may God bless our parish.

“tu debes bautizarme a mí.”

AFFORDABLE CARE ACT In concert with the other bishops of California, Bishop Barnes wishes to help those in our diocese understand how they can comply with this new law and gain access to health care in light of Church teaching on the sanctity of all human life. Brochures with frequently asked questions are available by the church entrance. WHAT IS THE AFFORDABLE CARE ACT? The ACA is a federal law passed in 2010 that requires individu-als to carry health insurance before April 1, 2014. The intent of the law is to improve affordability and accessibility of health care services for Americans, 57 million of who do not have health insurance today. WHAT IS THE POSITION OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH ON THE AFFORDABLE CARE ACT? The Bishops of the United States have long advocated for re-form that would improve access to health care for Americans, and thus supported the premise of the ACA. At the same time, the Church has publicly opposed a provision of the ACA, known as the HHS Mandate, that requires Catholic-affiliated employers to provide contraception and abortifacients as part of health care coverage offered to their employees. As an em-ployer, the Church views this mandate as a violation of its reli-gious freedom which, prior to the ACA, has been protected under the law. This dispute will ultimately be settled in the courts. It is important to distinguish between the Church’s objection, as an employer, to the HHS mandate portion of the law, and the elements of the law which seek to increase the number of peo-ple who have health insurance. The Church, in its capacity as a moral voice in society, has not taken a position against the ex-pansion of health care coverage through the individual mandate.
