From the Chair of the College Board Mr Jim Howard AM:
We begin the 2019 year with a new Year 12 Study Centre at 74 Hill Street. This is the first time we have been able to establish an education facility outside the boundaries of our existing campus. The establishment of the Year 12 Centre was a very difficult process and we congratulate the Principal, Sr Jillian Havey on her tenacity in working through years of submissions to State and Local Government, attending Parliamentary committees and lobbying politicians. She then worked with the architect, Mr Kon Michael of Swanbury Penglase and with the College Administration Team to achieve a design which is practical and which is in sympathy with the surrounding properties and blends in with the ambience of the Hill Street environment.I am pleased to inform you that as a mark of respect for the decades of devoted leadership of St Dominic’s Priory College that the Board of the college has decided to name the Year 12 Centre: the ‘Sr Jillian Havey Year 12 Study Centre’. The Centre will be blessed and opened in March. On behalf of the College Board we wish you all the best for 2019 and especially to the Year 12 students in their new environment, the additional Year 7s and the new students from Reception to Year 11.
A New Year Begins
Dear Parents,
You were a much appreciated family presence yesterday as Day One of the school year began for Reception to Year 8, and for Year 12 at 74 Hill Street, a lucky group becoming acquainted with their new and beautiful surroundings.
In your wisdom and experience you are aware of the special needs and perspectives of your child and you know how to encourage them not to become over worried by the newness of so much around them. Each of our Coordinators and Class Teachers also have a wealth of experience and can also help to support and ease your concerns. It takes time to adapt but what I learnt is that we have a wonderful group of new Middle School students and a beautiful Reception Class.
The first dates for your diary are there on the left of this page. The three which are “must do“ are as follows: • FamilyMassSunday10thFebruaryat9:30am• ParentTeacherInformationNight/s• SportsDayonSunday24thMarch
2018OutstandingYear12ResultsSt. Dominic’s overall results have been widely published online and in the print media and we want to congratulate our students on their commitment and success.• 45% of students gained an ATAR of 90 or
above placing them in the top 10% of all Australian students.
• 95%of all gradeswere achieved in theAandBgradebands.Merits were awarded in a range of subjects listed in today’s Bulletin.
Special congratulations to the 2018 St. Dominic’s Priory College Dux Minh Chau Le (pictured) who achieved an ATAR of 99.75, placing her in the top 1% of all Australian students.
Since the results first came out South Australian students have received the most eagerly awaited information viz., their Tertiary Offers. While we cannot publish these for privacy reasons it is interesting to note that 78% received their first choice of undergraduate courses. We are please to record also in such a highly competitive field that two students were awarded direct entry to medicine as a result of their plus ATAR. The tertiary courses chosen are many and varied and there is such a wealth of opportunity.
Congratulating Rita Shepherd OAM The College Community is delighted to offer congratulations to Deputy Principal Curriculum Rita Shepherd, (currently on leave), who was awarded an OAM medal in the general division in the recent Australia Day Honours. Rita’s citation is, “for service to the community through charitable organisations.” This rather general citation belies an extraordinary level of commitment to Children and Youth. For the past 10 years, since 2009 when the first India Pilgrimage bonded with an orphanage in Nagpur, run by the amazing Fr Herald De Souza O.P, Rita Shepherd has master minded a partnership between St. Dominic’s and the Yuva Yothi Orphanage. Her initial vison has grown through the inauguration of the Dare 2 Dream Foundation whereby powerless and underprivileged people beyond the orphanage are offered new hope. The results of this partnership with Fr Herald’s mission are wonderful and are mutually beneficial. Our students who go on the pilgrimage are offered a life changing experience. Here in our school our horizons are extended beyond the comfort of Australia to an understanding of the face of poverty amidst the beauty and humour and generosity of those ostensibly on the “receiving end.” Well done Rita.

College Planner & PoliciesWelcometothe2019schoolyear!
Today all students remained in their home class for lessons 1 and 2. During this time, new and returning students were welcomed and teachers had the opportunity to remind the girls of general housekeeping matters. Each student in Years 4-12 also received a CollegePlanner. Class Teachers visited College expectations and student policies which are located at the front of the College Planner (pages 7-25).
These include the:
- UniformPolicy- MobilePhonePolicy- HarassmentPolicy- DrugEducationPolicy- ChildProtection- ICTAcceptableUsePolicy- AssessmentandReportingPolicy- AcademicHonestyPolicy
Please take the time to familiarise yourselves with these College expectations and student
policies, and sign the College Planner on pages 15, 19 and 23 to indicate that you have
seen and read them.
SupervisionAs a school, we have a 'dutyof care' towards all our students. While the law recognises that sometimes accidents occur and can not be always prevented, the College takes the safety of students very seriously. We have a responsibility of ensuring the type of supervision which a parent would provide. Supervision is dependent on the age of a student and the type of activity which she is taking part in. I would like to give some reminders about several points which arise from the College’s 'dutyofcare' -
1. Each school day, students will be supervised within the College grounds from 8:30am (Reception - Year 6) and 8:20am (Years 7 - 12).
Students are also supervised during recess and lunchtimes.
2. During the school day, no student is permitted to leave the College grounds without permission from a parent
3. For safety reasons, students are not permitted to use the playground equipment unless supervised by a teacher
4. When dismissed in the afternoon, students are expected to leave the College grounds and proceed directly home.
Students attending activities organised by the College outside of regular school hours (sports, drama practice, debating, etc...) will be supervised.
Weaskthatparentscollecttheirdaughter/spromptlyattheendoftheschoolday
andattheendofCo-Curricularactivities.
5. When a student is absent, parents are asked to contact the College and advise of the absence. Parents will be contacted if the College has not been advised.
These measures allow both parents and staff to have a shared understanding and ensure a responsible degree of safety for the young people in our care.

PARENT ENGAGEMENT: Thank you to the parents who joined us for Morning Tea yesterday. We appreciated the ‘old parents’ welcoming our new families. It was a great opportunity to strengthen community ties and have a change to welcome our new families to our school.
NOTICES: At the beginning of every year there are always many notices that need to be signed. Please check with your daughter and return all notes signed, promptly.
LEARNING ASSISTANCE SUPPORT: We are always very grateful to our parents who can give up some of their time to support our students across a range of learning and sporting areas. If you are able to help, please let your daughter’s class teacher know ASAP. The more the merrier. If you often pop in with your daughter in the mornings, then perhaps you could ask the teacher if you could help with reading or be of some support in the classroom.
INDEPENDENCE DAY: Will begin in Week 4 and will be on a Tuesday this term and will rotate to a different day each term. If you hear reading or support in the class on that day. Reception and new families will receive a letter shortly outlining the purpose of Independence Day for our students.
NUDE FOOD: We begin the year again with Nude Food day on a Friday. If you can manage most days, that would be fantastic. We strongly encourage our parents to help support this important initiative. Encouragingly, we have noticed over the last couple of years a decrease in the amount of ‘wrapper’ waste in our school bins.
UNIFORM : Student s a re reminded that the correct wearing of the uniform is a pre-requisite for attendance. Any student who is unable to wear the correct uniform should have a note of explanation from the parent in her Communication Book / Planner, and this is to be shown to her class teacher. All clothing and effects should be clearly labelled with the student’s name. All students’ items
Primary Newsfrom Ms. Cate O’Leary
Primary School Coordinator
“If parents want to give their children a gift, the best thing they can do is to teach their children to love challenges, be intrigued by mistakes, enjoy effort, and keep on
learning.” Carol Dweck
Welcome to the new school year. We hope you all had time to relax and have fun with your family. Yesterday
we welcomed 35 new students and families to the Primary School. We were met with many smiles and beautiful weather. I would also imagine some nervous students and parents but there was certainly lots of chatter and an eagerness for the morning bell to ring so they could see their new room and begin the 2019 journey. The beginning of the year can be a challenging time so always remember to come and ask any questions or express any concerns as soon as they arise. If you feel that you need a bit of time, then see your child’s teacher to make an appointment. It is busy in the morning and afternoons and teachers like to give the proper time and consideration to your concerns.
We thank our teachers for their continued dedication, professionalism and hard work. Even on the Monday public holiday, several teachers spent time doing their final checks. Our primary staff have been spending considerable time planning and preparing curriculum programs, looking at the specific needs of the children in their care and organising appealing and exciting learning spaces for them.
!ParkingParking and school drop off and pick-ups are always a problem! Remember that the restricted area outside of the Barnard Street gate is a KISS AND DROP ZONE - The driver may not leave the car. After school, teachers will bring the children to you at your car. Please be considerate of the neighbours and DO NOT pull up in front of driveways, including our own. Inspectors are always around at the beginning of the year and the fines are expensive! This area is for all parents! If you want to come in you must not park there during the restricted hours. This is fair for all parents and we ask that you respect this rule. A reminder too that you are not allowed to do a U turn in front of
a school. We aim to move our students out efficiently and we are also grateful to families who write their family name on a card, so that teachers can identify the family quickly. We are also thankful to our Year 5 and 6 monitors who help support the teachers on duty.

Tuesday February 5th Primary Parent Information Evening
This is a very important night as this is the opportunity for you to meet in class groups and hear all about class routines and expectations. We hope to see you all there. There will be a note going home
about this and we ask that you return the form ASAP.

of clothing will be checked by class teachers on Monday Week 2. If any items are not named a note will be sent home to you. We also expect that students have their drink bottles and lunch boxes named.
REMEMBER: We have a ‘No Hat No Play’ policy and so, please make sure your daughter has her sport hat named and with her every day or leaves it at school. Years 4 to 6 students have a School Planner, so it is important that you read the information and policies in the front. Please support us with this, as the policies are clear and are important for the school and for the girls. Reception to Year 3 students will bring home a copy of the Uniform Policy for you to keep. We ask that students only wear sport uniform on the days that it is required. The rules apply equally to everyone. If there is a valid reason while they are not in the correct uniform, then please supply a note in the Planner or Communication Book. Black or Navy ribbons only and hair past the shoulder must be tied back. Many Year 4,5 and 6 students have the Black Sports t/shirt. This top is only to be worn when competing for the school and is not allowed to be worn during the week in their sport or fitness lessons.
ATTENDANCE: Good attendance at school is paramount to success. Any absence of 5 days per term is considered chronic absenteeism unless a medical condition prevents them from attending school. It also sets good habits for the future and an attitude that school is important. If a student is absent from school through sickness or any other reason, parents are asked to notify the school office (8267 3818) before 9.00am. There is a voicemail should you call this number outside school hours, a mobile number you can SMS (0429 558 017) and also a dedicated Absentee Email: [email protected]. PLEASE ENSURE you include your daughter’s CLASS and FIRST + LAST NAME in any absentee notification. The school will contact parents of students who are away without an explanation. Following any absence, a note in the Communication Book / Planner should be sent to the teacher. For any absence over a THREE DAYS a Doctor’s Certificate is needed. A note in the Communication Book / Planner is
required for permission to leave the school property during school hours.
FOR YOUR DIARY: Don’t forget our Parent Night on Tuesday, February 5th in the Hall. A reminder that this event is only for parents. We hope to see you all there. You will receive a formal letter regarding this evening, early this week.
Another important date for the calendar is Sunday February 10th. This is our Family Mass, in the Gym, at 9.30. See the main section of the Bulletin for more information.
We will have our first official Assembly in the hall next Tuesday Week 2 at 2:30pm. The Year 6s will be hosting and you are more than welcome to attend.
YEAR 4/5/6 RUNNING CLUB: will be at 8:10am on Friday mornings, beginning Week 3. A note will be coming home soon. If you are a parent ho would also like to join s on the 2km run, we would appreciate your support, but you must have a current Police Clearance check and Responding to Abuse and Neglect form. Please make any inquiries to Mrs Dolores Heggs.
We wish you all a smooth transition back to school routines and the 2019 school year, as we prepare for exciting learning experiences,
new challenges, new friendships and new adventures

WellbeingMaintaining a healthy well-being is vital for us to
be able to tackle the many challenges and worries we all face in life. This year each week, all classes will focus on the same mindfulness value. We will practise these and continue to develop positive
habits. In the bulletin I will also mention our weekly focus and we would encourage all parents to talk
to their daughters and where possible we will recommend readings and websites which may
support home discussions too.

SPORTS NEWSTerm 1 Sport NominationsThis week students have been asked to nominate for Term 1 Saturday Sport (Basketball, Tennis, Touch, Volleyball, and Water Polo). As always we ask that the commitment required for both training and games is taken into consideration when nominating to play.
Nomination forms have been e-mailed to all students and need to be printed and returned by Monday 4th February (at the latest). There is a box for reply slips located outside of the PE Office, upstairs in the Gym. Please don’t hesitate to contact Mr Tim Grant at the school if you have any questions about the Saturday Sport Program.
Secondary School Sport SA - State TeamsEach year the South Australian Secondary Sport Association enters teams in a number of different interstate competitions. Trials will be held throughout the year for the following sports:
Cross Country, AFL Football, Soccer, Hockey, Netball, Softball, Surfing, Swimming, Tennis,
Triathlon, Touch, Volleyball
These teams are of an extremely high standard and guidelines suggest that those wishing to be selected
should possess a well above average ability and experience. Any students interested in trying out for one of the State Teams should see Mr Grant in the PE Office for further information about both trials and competitions.
All the best for 2019. We look forward to seeing many of our students representing St. Dominic’s in the sporting arena!

Parents & FriendsWelcome back to school for 2019. On behalf of the
Parents & Friends Committee, we hope that you all had a lovely Christmas and New Year, and that everybody is refreshed and looking forward to the year ahead. The Parents & Friends Executive is comprised of Gabrielle Stradling, Kate Jensen, Maria Lappas and Rebecca Copeland. We look forward to meeting you throughout the year. We thank all the members of the Parents & Friends who help at our events, making St. Dominic’s such a great community to be a part of. We would like to welcome new families to the college, and old scholars who are returning with daughters, as well as continuing families at the school. We invite all to be part of the Committee; attending our meetings and assisting us throughout the year.
Family Mass: We are beginning to prepare for our first community event this year, the Family Mass, on Sunday 10 February. The Parents & Friends provide Morning Tea and free ice blocks for the children after the Mass. There will also be Memorabilia and homemade jams and preserves for sale. This is a great opportunity for new families to meet and for others to catch up again.
Parent-Teacher Information NightsWe will also attend your daughters’ Parent Information Night over the next few weeks to provide you with more details on the Parent & Friends activities planned for the year ahead. At these sessions you will be given a copy of the Events for 2019 brochure to assist your family in planning for the
school’s social events. Please keep the guide as your reference throughout the year.As the year progresses we will ask for your help via the Bulletin prior to the events. In addition, you can leave your name with your daughter’s class teacher or the front office, or please feel free to contact us directly:
[email protected] 0431 589 321 [Maria Lappas]
Our first meeting will be held on Wednesday February 20th in the College Office – everyone is welcome, the focus of this meeting will be preparation for Sports Day.We appreciate any assistance that you can offer throughout the year and we thank you in advance. We understand that time is valuable but your help contributes to help make our school a better place for all of our daughters and create the college community. We look forward to meeting you at the upcoming parent meetings and Family Mass.

Why is it essential that parents attend the Information evenings?
You have entrusted your daughter’s education to teachers who will have a major influence on her education and well-being. You need to know who they are and their expectations. You will be helped by understanding the policies which directly affect your daughter’s learning especially the Academic Honesty Policy and the Assessment Policy.
Each of the Year levels has in addition a special program related to the specific needs of that group. In Year 12 that will be assistance from an educational Psychologist. In Year 11 that will include some attention to the research Project. In Year 10 there will be follow up in the areas of the MYP Personal Project. In Year 9 the agenda will include high quality assistance for parents with the world. In year 8 there will be many important aspects re the day to day world of her learning and well being.
