Geniet dit was anders as verlede jaar

• This year’s Letaba show has been touted as having a diff erent feel and look. Did you visit the show this weekend? If so, what comments do you have and what did you think of the show in general?

Of wit smur es?Of selfs ‘n swart Elvis?

Vlieg dink ook die Departement van

Tradisionele Sake sou ‘n kommissie van ondersoek aanstel as ‘n

Sangoma homself as ‘n witman vermom!

Niemand v e r s t a a n

beter as Vlieg hoe dit is as almal altyd teen jou diskrimineer of jou

stereotipeer nie!Sies meisies, Vlieg

vrye voete.

Eco Park gehou.

Is Mr Tim Maake, the controversial manager of the Mopani District Municipality, receiving spe-cial treatment in a police investigation regard-ing alleged fraud, corruption, racketeering and money laundering?

Maake was arrested in Lenyenye earlier this year, but that was also kept very quiet and peo-ple say his arrest took place rather secretively. The Bulletin has no established exclusively that an Ex Parte application to issue a subpoena for Maake “to furnish material or relevant infor-mation, to wit the information as set out in An-nexure A att ached to Schedule , regarding any alleged crime, to wit the crime(s) of draud, cor-ruption, racketeering and money laundering”,

was held before a magistrate in chambers (in other words, not in an open court).

We have also succeeded in obtaining infor-mation about the contents of the Annexure A referred to exclusively. According to this doc-ument the Police (Commercial Branch) are in-vestigating alleged irregularities pertaining to boreholes in the Maruleng, Ba-Phalaborwa, Greater Letaba, Greater Giyani and Greater Tza-neen municipalities.

A total amount of over R75 million is men-tioned. We will share more about these alarming allegations with our readers next week.

— Francois [email protected]

Kerk in Tzaneen gehou.

The Mopani District Municipality (MDM), having earned their stripes for not minding to waste ratepay-ers’ money, now has to pay R7 500 to sett le an amount of R2 000 — an escalation of 368%.

How come? Quite simple and to-tally unnecessary: In June 2012 the MDM placed an advertisement in the Bulletin. The cost was R2 042,88. A year later, in July 2013, the account had not been sett led, de-spite numerous requests.

So we decided, as a matt er of prin-ciple, to institute legal action against the MDM. That made no impression on them and they simply ignored the lawyer’s lett ers, demanding sett lement of the account, and when the court granted judgement against the insti-tution they kept on ignoring the situa-tion. The next step was that the sheriff att ached some photocopiers, other electronic equipment and even fridges.

They still showed no reaction and

a sale in execution was advertised, which also made no impression on them. When the sheriff arrived to remove the articles that he had at-tached earlier on, they suddenly re-alised that they’d bett er pay.

The initial amount of R2 042,88 had by then grown to R7 517,41, which included interest, our lawyer’s legal fees, the sheriff ’s fees and the cost of advertisements in newspapers. They paid the full amount...

The MDM’s manager, the contro-versial Mr Tim Maake, should ex-plain how such bad administration and wasteful expenditure could be tolerated. That, however, is highly unlikely to happen, since the MDM has become known for the rather in-sensitive way in which they spend other people’s hard earned money.

Shame on the MDM and their chief accounting offi cer, Mr Tim Maake.

— Francois [email protected]

The man who masqueraded as a sheriff and collected hundreds of thousands of Rand from inno-cent and credulous “clients” in Mopani has been cornered. The Bulletin exclusively exposed Mr Ngwako Kgatla from the Bolobedu area some six months ago. He has been on the run since then and managed to avoid a large number of people who were looking for him.

Kgatla and FNB (his bankers) have now been ordered by judge Maumela in the North Gauteng

High Court to pay an amount of R287 720,09 “within 48 hours” into the trust account of the law-yer for Messrs Masilo John Mod-jela and Khashane Archibold Modjela.

The lawyer is now considering a class action on behalf of a large number of people who were done in by Kgatla against him. We will share some more information about this new development with our readers next week.

— Francois [email protected]

Vanjaar se tema is “Somerkersfees”.

Kaartjies is reeds beskikbaar by die kerkkan-toor.

‘n Storm in ‘n koppie tee, sê sommiges.

Give creditGive credit where it is due. Many South Africans often feel miserable and disheart-ened about corruption, nepotism, farm murders, rape, the gross neglect of infra-structure, the decline in standards (i.e. education, health services etc) and cheap political rhetoric that is used in a way that makes people realise that politicians think everybody is mentally handicapped.

Yes, it is frustrating to have to cope with all these things. But let us be honest and give credit where it is due.

Selebi has been kicked out (a pity though, that he is allowed to sit at home), Agliotti’s wings have been clipped and he is finally on trial, Nxana is on thin ice, Nkandla is not going to land in the president’s lap without some adjustments (although we suspect not everybody who helped to steal ratepayers’ money will in the end have to cough up), some pretty useless members of the cabinet have been fired (sadly not all the useless ones) etc.

But: SARS runs like a Swiss clock, with Minister Gordhan now having to sort out the mess in local government we are likely to see improvement (it will not hap-pen overnight), the leaders seem to realise that unemployment needs to be addressed more seriously, capital investment in infra-structure will help to create jobs, some po-tentially fatal socialist unworkable plans have been shelved and more will follow.

Let us hope we will see a more realistic approach to, from and in local govern-ments in our province and towns.

Marriage! What is it? Is it necessary? These and many more questions are often asked in today’s world. There seems to be a constant search for reasons as to why or why not one should marry.

Marriage is total commitment to one another, it is saying this is the one I have chosen to spend the rest of my life with. Now there a different types of marriages, com-mon law, civil law and religious marriages. As I see it God only comes in to the equation in a religious marriage, for it is only here that one is bound together by a messenger of God.

Yes, there is the legal part, the signing of the marriage document, but it is only in this ceremony that the couple are bound together in God’s sight and it is said “Who God puts together let no man put apart”

What if something goes wrong and the partner you have chosen is not whom you expected? What if there is abuse, in any form? Well then there is divorce where the legality of the marriage is rescinded by a judge/magistrate.

But what if people have just drifted apart? This is caused by the lack of communication in most cases and then they decide to sepa-rate and even sometimes it leads to divorce. These are earthly mat-ters and legal matters not spiritual matters.

If God has joined you then you will remain joined until He parts you, no matter what a document of divorce says. The scriptures are very clear about this and it states that God abhors divorce if it is not due to unfaithfulness of either party. So when we all stand before God to be judged maybe He will ask us what we did to break the bond He created between us.

How will we answer if we did not at least in some way try to com-municate our feelings or to seek help in trying to remain faithful to one another and to Him? We all make excuses as to why things did not work out and often it is not just the one party who is to blame, but both. It has been said there is three sides to every story; his side, her side and the truth.

Now I plead with all who are married, communicate your feelings no matter how hard they may be or how simple they may seem to you. A marriage consists of three parties, the wife, the husband and God.

Blessings.

Ons Mening The Message

“Unfair” reportingMathebula Jappy writes by e-mail: Mr

Editor, I’m responding to the article in your newspaper (Bulletin 20 June 2014) titled Concern over total neglect ot the college on page 7 by one of your reporters.

For a long time I agreed with your slogan of “Fearlessly the Truth”, but in this article, I think the ethics of journalism has been betrayed. None of the users of the institution e.g teachers and circuit managers have been interviewed. It looks like the article is intended to fight and demoralise the keepers of the institution or to portray the in-stitution as a useless thing.

Before one could even read the article, the beau-tiful picture of the main gate opposes your head-ing especially the words “total neglect”. The oth-er pictures like the one indicating the staff living quarters, as a former student of the institution, I don’t remember the college having staff living quarters, so get your facts right.

Mr Editor, this article sent be back to the insti-tution although I’m a regular there on work re-lated issues. The reporter might have been given a story and pictures by a person who has motives and your reporter never bothered to visit the in-stitution to get the truth. I’m also sure that the reporter cannot match some of the pictures to the real location in the institution. I will be happy if Bulletin can visit Tivumbeni and write another article fearlessly and truthfully. The little truth I know about the institution is:

Tivumbeni is one if not the only well-kept for-mer college of education. List few former colleges that you know, visit them and compare them with Tivumbeni, maybe you can know which one is best suitable for the words “total neglect”. I’m also sure that if the department of education in-tend to re-open two former colleges of education, Tivumbeni will be one of them and no renovation will be necessary.

The institution is always fully booked through-out the year by different government department and private sector for functions, i.e workshops, seminars, meetings, conferences, etc

It is a sleep-in marking centre for Gr 12 exams in November and June, and teachers/markers would have long protested if the institution is as described in your article as they did in other marking centres.

It is also an examinations centre for some of the best universities in the country and these univer-sities have conditions for approving an institution as a centre and tidiness is one of the conditions.

The institution also house the department of ed-ucation’s circuits offices and the you can ask the circuit officials about the textbooks on the picture

not the c e n t r e manager.

L a s t l y, I think your article should have been a concern over the under-utilisation of such a beautiful institu-tion by the department when it is struggling with the shortage of maths and science teachers. You can also challenge the department of sports, art and culture which is in charge of libraries in the province on why they don’t use the library at Ti-vumbeni. • Sir, you are the one who should revisit the col-lege. A week or two before we started our investi-gation, slightly less than a month before the sto-ry was published, the place was overgrown with grass. From the street it looked like a somewhat neglected building altogether. The beautiful pic-ture of the main gate is truly just the picture of the main gate. A few meters from the main gate into the grounds, one will surely not miss the wearing of paint on the walls of the building and the deterioration thereof.

Surely, you couldn’t have read our news report. Maybe you couldn’t get past the “beautiful pic-ture of the main gate” and the “opposing” title, or else you’d have seen that we spoke to the cur-rent manager of the property, Mr Mushwana, about the facility. Mr Mushwana, who was kind enough to talk to us about the current functions of the college as well as its history, said he would not say much in relation to the property’s man-agement, maintenance and future plans as it’s not his place to do so. In this case, it’s not hard to understand, if the manager of the property is prohibited to talk on its maintenance, the voice of some ordinary teacher or frequent user of the property will hold no legitimacy in doing so.

If Tivumbeni is one of the well-kept former col-leges of education, then the others must be in a total state of collapse. — Editor

The true storyT J Malatji FCIS, General Secretary, Mam-phoku Makgoba Community Trust writes: Given the malicious reports that have been doing the rounds in the media seeking to tar-nish the image Mamphoku Makgoba Com-munity Trust, it has become necessary for the Trust to set the record straight. We are great-ly concerned that The Sowetan has taken the lead in such character assassination sug-

g e s t i n g that such r e p o r t s on the Makgo-

ba Land Claim are funded for that purpose. I have noted that this becomes a norm each time

government departments show interest in the land. Sowetan has unashamedly gone on to carry a similar story in two consecutive days in the past to justify what we believed was someone’s point to rejuvenate the former Sapekoe Tea Estate.

In the Sowetan of 21 July 2014 Mr Horatio Motjuwadi scurrilously reported that most of the 43 farms restored to the community lie fallow cit-ing the former Sapekoe Tea Estate as his example. The report further suggests that Professor Male-gapuru Makgoba resigned from the Trust be-cause of irregularities regarding money and ten-ders and that Judge Ephraim Makgoba resigned from the Trust to avoid being part of some dodgy activities in the Trust.

It beats logic how the veteran journalist has fla-grantly failed to hear the other side of the story on a number of allegations made in his report.

The purpose for which Mamphoku Makgoba Community Trust was established in 2004 is to manage, maintain and safeguard the land res-tituted to the Makgoba beneficiaries. Added to this is the administration of beneficiaries. Prof. Makgoba’ s term of office as a trustee expired and Judge Makgoba resigned before the land was res-tituted to the community in April 2009. Objective journalism could have investigated and reported on which tenders, monies and dodgy activities characterised the Trust pre-restitution. We chal-lenge assertions that Prof Makgoba resigned from the Trust.

Mr Thupane Joseph Makgoba is the founding member and current chairperson of the Trust which currently has 13 trustees elected by the tribe and four vacant positions reserved for the Makgoba Royal Council. Obviously the contesta-tion over the chieftaincy as reported is attribut-able to the absence of the Royal Council in the Trust. It is a fact that the Trust cannot take sides in the contestation and we have repeatedly called on all concerned to distance the Trust from it.

Mr Motjuwadi’s bigoted expectation for Mr Thupane Joseph Makgoba to give answers on royal battles is absurd, mischievous and nefari-ous, to say the least. On issues pertaining to the administration of the Trust, sobriety could have prevailed to any journalist that other Trust mem-bers, especially the Secretariat were there to re-spond to questions.

Contrary to assertions, the Trust received prop-erties majority of which were liabilities in their

own forms and since 2009 managed to survive without any funding from Government by main-taining third cycle coppices, cleared bushes and planted eucalyptus trees, maintained houses and fruit trees which all have proven efficacious for our going concern strategy.

In 2010 when the Limpopo Department of Ag-riculture (LDA) again showed interest in reviving the Tea Estate, the Trust vehemently opposed the idea of pursuing the black tea market given studies that clearly revealed that black tea is too costly to produce and has no market. Forensic au-dit was invoked as a threat to push the Trust into submission. Mr Motjuwadi is kindly referred to the report by the then Deputy Minister of Rural Development Mr Thulas Nxesi who declared that the whole exercise was a waste of Government resources.

A Caretakership Contract was then transferred from the Trust to LDA to revive the Tea Estate. In his report Mr Motjuwadi reliably informs the nation that plundered about R50 million on the farm. Had Mr Motjuwadi at least spoken to any of the 589 registered beneficiaries he would have learned the fabricated stories he wrote about are from unregistered claimants hell-bent on de-stroying the Makgoba Land Claim.

Objective journalism would have produced credible information and not have prematurely climaxed as it is echoed in the Sowetan story about the Makgoba Land Claim.

An injectable contraceptive, Im-planon, is now available at all clinics. A 31-year-old Mopani resident was one of the first re-cipients of this revolutionary con-traceptive, which has a three year efficacy. She was put on Implanon at the Kgapane Clinic last month. She said that despite having been on the pill for years, she fell pregnant twice. The pill was deemed not strong enough for her. She was injected into her arm and a square ‘chip’ was inserted. She says it was painful but quick. The bruis-ing only started going down after ten days. She was very relieved as she had always

had irregular and painful peri-ods and can now look forward to three years of no pain and no menstruation. Clinics around the country are advising women to go on Im-planon.

After carefully sifting through a record amount of entries, the 2014 Sanlam/Business Partners Entrepreneur of the Year® judging panel have identi ed the fourteen nalists who have been selected to advance to

the nal round of the competition, of which Ms Adri Kruger, owner of Tzaneen Country Lodge at Tarentaalrand, is the only nalist from Limpopo.

The Tzaneen Country Lodge is a country style hotel, owned and managed by Kruger, who together with her husband in 2000 purchased an old and delapidated farmstead next door, successfully developed what was intended to be a four-bedroomed guest house into a full services sixty bedroom hotel.

The hotel o ers executive suites, double, twin, honeymoon and family rooms, as well as facilities for the physically disabled. The establishment has an a la Carte restaurant and cocktail bar, an in-house Earth Spa Wellness Centre, which specialises in various treatments to pamper guests, and an animal touch farm and Tea Garden to cater for children and families alike.

The Tzaneen Conference Centre and Event Venue

accommodates up to 500 delegates and o ers the use of several conference rooms, break-away rooms, an executive boardroom, as well as an open-air amphitheatre that is used for weddings, events and festivals.

The hotel currently employs 58 permanent sta members and ten temporary sta members, and together with maintenance, gardens and farm employees, the business employs a total of 215 people.

Kruger rmly believes that the core of the hotel’s success is the quality and dedication of the sta . An example of this is an employee, Mr Isaac Selowa, who was previously a roadside hawker, and is now a successful senior restaurant manager at the hotel’s a la carte restaurant, Feathers.

Since its inception both Kruger and the hotel have been recognised by various industry bodies and have won several awards. In 2013 the hotel was named as the Best Small Business in South Africa by AHI, and also received the Best Responsible Tourism Award by SATOA, a leading international professional non-pro t travel and tourism association.

This award paid tribute to the years of dedication to green and responsible tourism practices which are central to the Tzaneen Country Lodge culture.

Spring tips for garden

& home

Page 10: Bulletin 140815

With temperatures rising, daylight time get-ting longer and prett y much everything blos-soming, you will want to spend time in your garden this Spring. Here are some tips to prepare a rich colourful spring garden.

Survey the YardMake note of tree limbs that

should be removed or cabled, especially those that overhang structures. Hire an arborist to maintain large trees. Cut

down last year’s perennial foliage, and toss it into the compost pile. Rake mulch from beds

planted with bulbs before foliage appears, and refresh mulch in other planting areas aft er soil warms. Check fences, steps, and pathways for disrepair caused by freezing and thawing.Order Tools and Plants

Tune up tools so everything is ready when things start growing.

Make note of what is missing, and order tools for the new growing season.

Choose new plants for the garden. Or-der perennials, trees and shrubs for spring planting.Get Ready to Mow

Send the mower and leaf blower for servicing, or if you have the right tools, sharpen the mower blades yourself. Re-fi ll your mower with oil, install fresh spark plugs, and lubricate moving parts if nec-essary. Clear the lawn of winter debris, and look for areas that need reseeding be-fore mowing.Prune Trees and Shrubs

Remove dead, dam-aged, and diseased

branches from woody plants. Thin and trim summer-blooming shrubs such as butt erfl y bush, hydrangea, and most roses, except for

old-fashioned once bloomers. Prune cold-damaged wood aft er plants re-sume spring growth. Prune spring-blooming shrubs and trees aft er fl ow-ering.Take a Soil Test

Check soil pH with a home soil- test kit, taking several samples from dif-

ferent planting areas for an ac-curate reading. Enrich soil as necessary: Add dolomitic lime to raise the pH or elemental sul-phur to lower the pH.Prepare New Beds

Clear the planting area as soon as soil can be worked, remov-ing sod or weeds and debris. Spread a 4-inch layer of compost or well-

rott ed manure and any amendments over soil, and cultivate it to a depth of 10 to 12 inches with a spading fork.Plant

Plant bare-root trees, shrubs, and perennials such as hostas and day-lilies by early spring.

Choose a cool, cloudy day if possible. Trans-plant container-grown plants anytime during the growing season except midsummer; be

sure to water them thoroughly. Sow seeds of cool-season fl owers like sweet peas, poppies, and ca-lendula, and vegetables such as lett uce, parsley, and spinach.

FertilizeApply balanced fertilizer (6-6-6 or 8-8-8),

fi sh emulsion, or other soil amendments recommended by soil-test results around trees and shrubs when new growth appears. Spread high-acid fertiliz-er and pine-needle mulch around acid-loving shrubs like azaleas and camellias. Begin fertiliz-ing perennials when ac-

tive growth resumes.Start a Compost Pile

Start a compost pile, or use a compost bin, if you don’t have one already. Begin by collecting plant debris and leaves raked up from the garden. Chop these up fi rst to speed decomposition. Add equal amounts “brown” (carbon-rich) materials like dried

leaves and straw and “green” (nitrogen-rich) materials like grass clippings and weeds in even layers with water and a compost bioac-tivator. Turn regularly. Continue adding to the pile throughout the season for rich, home-made compost next spring.Clean Bird Feeders and Baths

Disinfect the feeders by scrubbing with weak bleach solution (1/4 cup bleach: 2 gallons warm water). Rinse and dry the feeders thoroughly before

refi lling them.Scrub birdbaths with bleach solution, then rinse them thoroughly and re-fi ll, changing water weekly. Clean birdbaths and feeders regularly throughout the season.

Preparing a Spring Garden

Page 11: Bulletin 140815

Ms Soekie van Rens-burg of Tzaneen gra-duated as an interior architect. She works mostly in Mozam-bique, Botswana and even Mauritius and other African countries. She spoke to us about interior design and adjusting home design for Spring.

Ms Van Rensburg, the weather is becom-ing warmer. How important is it to adapt your interior to diff erent seasons?

We oft en get so used to having some things around that we keep repeating them even though styles change and decorating trends move on. Visual clutt er is another problem — we

tend to buy and pile too many accessories in one place. It’s important to move things, furniture, around from time to time and create space in our rooms. It feels good to have space to breathe and it’s calming to have less stuff to take in visually.

What is the trend in spring interior design at the moment?

The most popular themes in interior design for warmer seasons are soft colours, casual fabrics, wicker and lots of plants. Bring the long, sunny days of summer into your home

irrespective of whether it is traditional or modern. Add colour, texture and portable ac-cessories for that fresh, summer décor.

Accessories give any room individuality and breathe new life into it. You can also change the sett ing of your house by moving existing furniture to diff erent places. Geometric tex-tiles and rugs are also popular for the summer.

What are some of the aff ordable and sus-tainable ways in which one can decorate/design one’s home?

Try to create an environment that will best support the specifi c activity or activities in-tended for the space. Be creative and decorate sustainably by using vintage, second hand and recycled pieces in your home. Make sure there are fair trade and ethical processes with the products you use. Be mindful and take a “slow

decorating” approach so you can make the best choices. Good quality items are oft en items made in the past

and pieces with character and history. Going on a treasure hunt at a garage sale or antique shops can also be fun and exciting!

How important is it to have an interior architect/designer when decorating your home?

An interior designer will help you choose the right decor, lightning, paint colour, etc — depending on what you want, within the lim-its of your budget. If you know exactly what you need, you can do your home’s interior yourself and only ask for advice on things you’re unsure about.

What do you enjoy most about being an interior architect?

I get to be creative and do something I’m truly passionate about.

The sun is coming out, the days are getting longer, kids want to go outside and play. Build your kids a backyard swing and keep them entertained for hours this spring in these 14 simple steps:

Tools• 150mm (D) x 3m treated pine logs (5)• M12 galvanised threaded rod cut to 240

and 340mm lengths (with 12 washers and nuts to suit)

• 4 pigtail hooks and 2 nuts for each• Swings, as selected• 2 bags of coarse aggregate• Concrete (2-3 bags per pole)• Paint

Step 1: Mark 300 and 2450mm from the bot-tom of each pole. Cross the poles at about 60° so the two 2450mm marks coincide.

Step 2: Spread the poles so they’ll be 2000mm apart at the 300mm mark. Check the crossover at the top again to ensure it’s still correct.

Step 3: Run a pencil along both sides of the top pole where they cross over to draw in the notch to be cut out of the bottom pole. Tilt the pencil inwards slightly so the notch width will be about 140mm, as you are not housing the full diameter of the pole. Without moving the poles, repeat to mark the underside of the top pole.

Step 4: Cut along the 2 lines with a power saw set to cut to a depth of 50mm. Keep the saw level as you cut so the housings will be of equal depth. Then make a series of parallel cuts between the outer cuts.

Step 5: Chisel out the waste. To allow for the curve of the log that you’re fitting into the notches, use a chisel to bevel the hous-ing shoulders slightly.

Step 6: To join the 2 logs together, drill through both with a long 12mm auger bit. Cut a 240mm length of 12mm threaded rod with a hacksaw or angle grinder, put a wash-er and nut on 1 end, and hammer the rod through the hole. Fit a washer and the other

nut. Use 2 spanners to tighten. Repeat for the second frame.

Step 7: Set out for the swing on the ground. The 2 frames are 3m apart and the bottom of the poles in each frame 2400mm apart. Mark each corner with a peg, then check the diago-nals to make sure the frame will be square. Mark a 300 x 300mm square at each corner, allowing for the 100mm pole offset in each frame. Dig four 300 x 300 x 400mm-deep holes. On slight slopes, add extra depth to up-hill holes to compensate.

Step 8: Pour 50mm of coarse aggregate (blue metal) into each hole. To check the top of the gravel finishes at the same height in each hole, stand equal lengths of timber off-cuts in each and check with a level across the top. If you get someone to help, it’ll make this job a lot easier.

Step 9: With your helper, stand the two A-frames in position and prop them in place with temporary braces. Tilt in both frames 50mm at the top.

Step 10: Position the swing support beam across the top and check for level. Stand back and check by eye that everything is in align-ment. You may need to adjust the gravel levels slightly to adjust the levels.

Step 11: When everything is in place, pour 2-3 bags of concrete into each hole to hold the legs. We used rapid-setting concrete – but if you have the time, use ordinary concrete and let it set for 24 hours.

Step 12: Centre the crossbeam and drill through both leg and crossbeam. Cut 340mm of the threaded rod and drive through and se-cure with 2 washers and 2 nuts.

Step 13: Paint frame with 1 coat of primer un-dercoat, then with 2 coats of exterior acrylic. Choose a bright colour – the kids will love it. When dry, measure 500 and 900mm from the inside of each frame along top beam and drill 12mm holes.

Step 14: Tap in the pigtail hooks which al-ready have a flange to suit the round poles. Then add the flange- cum-washer to the top and secure with 2 nuts. The second nut acts as a locknut. Slip on the swing ropes and ad-just so the swing seat is about 350mm above the ground.

Pick your paint colours last, choose mis-matched seating and don’t forget the closet lighting. Make your home a wonder using these simple tricks and tips:

Pile On the PillowsOne pair of pillows always looks skimpy.

Use two pairs in contrasting patt erns, colors, and textures.

Buy a Bigger BedSmall-scale furniture only makes a small

bedroom look smaller. Try a high bed and a tall headboard. Your room will grow.

Leave Cabinets Open An open armoire is more interesting than a

closed one. Let people into your secret world.Go DarkDark walls do the opposite of what you’d

expect: They make a small room feel bigger.Large Collections Need OrderWall brackets can bring order to a large col-

lection or odd shapes.Use a Real Rug in the BathroomUse a rug instead of a bath mat. It was made

to withstand a lot more wear than the occa-sional wet foot.

It’s Okay to Skip the SofaThere’s no rule that a living room has to

have a sofa.White WorksYou’ll never get tired of a white living room.Mix StylesA four-poster bed will take the chill out of a

modern bedroom.Layer Your LightingFour lamps are bett er than two. You need

ambient light for mood and direct light for reading.

Tuck In Your ThrowsKeep throws under control. Fold them

lengthwise, then in half, then tuck them into cushions.

Kick Your Traditional Coff ee Table to the CurbThe most versatile coff ee table you’ll ever

own is an ott oman topped with a tray.Skirted Furniture Finishes a RoomToo many chair and table legs can make a

room “nervous.” A skirted piece or two will make it feel “grounded.

Gold Is GorgeousGold is back in a big

way. A few accents will warm up a room.

Plants Cheer Up a Lonely Corner

Nothing soft ens a lonely corner in a big room like a pot-ted tree.

Leather LastsThe most indestruct-

ible fabric for dining chairs is leather or vi-nyl, especially if you want whit.

Switch Up Your Seating

Mix up the seating at your dining table. You wouldn’t have eight identical chairs in your living area.

Don’t Forget the Closet Lighting

Love your closets. Paint them, paper them, hang pictures in them to inspire you. And defi nitely light them.

Refi nish Vintage Finds

Don’t be afraid to paint a vintage piece. Every piece of furni-ture can’t be brown.

• Use your windows to gain cool air and keep out heat- Install window coverings to prevent heat gain through

windows.• Operate your thermostat effi ciently- When it’s hot, set your thermostat as high as comfort-

ably possible. The smaller the diff erence between the in-door and outdoor temperatures, the lower your overall energy consumed.

- When you leave, keep your house warmer than nor-mal. Lower the sett ing to 26°C only when you are at home and need cooling. A programmable thermostat can make it easy to set back your temperature.

- Avoid sett ing the thermostat temperatures lower than normal when turning on the air conditioner. It will not cool your home any faster and could result in excessive cooling and unnecessary expense.

• Use fans and ventilation strategies to cool your home- A ceiling fan can allow you to raise the thermostat set-

ting about -15°C with no reduction in comfort.- Turn off ceiling fans when you leave the room. Re-

member that fans cool people, not rooms, by creating a wind chill eff ect.

- When you shower or take a bath, use the bathroom fan to remove the heat and humidity from your house. Your laundry room might also benefi t from spot ventilation. Make sure bathroom and kitchen fans are vented to the outside (not just to the att ic).

• Keep your cooling system running effi ciently- Schedule regular maintenance for your cooling

equipment.- Avoid placing lamps or TV sets near your room air-

conditioning thermostat. The thermostat senses heat from these appliances, which can cause the air condition-er to run longer than necessary.

- Vacuum registers regularly to remove any dust build-up. Ensure that furniture and other objects are not block-ing the airfl ow through your registers.

• Be careful not to heat your home with appliances and lighting

- On hot days, avoid using the oven; cook on the stove, use a m i -crowave oven or grill outside.

- Install effi cient lighting that runs cooler. Only about 10% to 15% energy consumed by incandescent lights results in light — the rest is turned into heat.

- Take advantage of daylight instead of ar-

tifi cial lighting, but avoid direct sunlight.- Wash only full loads of dishes and clothes. Consider

air drying both dishes and clothing.- Take short showers instead of baths.- Minimize activities that generate a lot of heat, such

as running a computer, burning open fl ames, running a dishwasher, and using hot devices such as curling irons or hair dryers. Even stereos and televisions will add some heat to your home.

• Keep hot air from leaking into your home- Seal cracks and openings to prevent warm air from

leaking into your home.- Add caulk or weather-stripping to seal air leaks around

leaky doors and windows.• Lower your water heating costs(Water heating can account for about 4% to 25% of en-

ergy consumption in your home.)- Turn down the temperature of your water heater to the

warm sett ing (49°C). In this way, you will not only save energy. You will also avoid scalding your hands.

Spring, the sweet spring, is the year’s pleasant king,Then blooms each thing, then maids dance in a ring,

Cold doth not sting, the pretty birds do sing: Cuckoo, jug-jug, pu-we, to-witta-woo!

The palm and may make country houses gay,Lambs frisk and play, the shepherds pipe all day,

And we hear aye birds tune this merry lay: Cuckoo, jug-jug, pu-we, to-witta-woo!

The fields breathe sweet, the daisies kiss our feet,

Young lovers meet, old wives a-sunning sit,In every street these tunes our ears do greet:

Cuckoo, jug-jug, pu-we, to witta-woo! Spring, the sweet spring!

Passion, skill and teamwork was the name of the game at the 2014 annual Farms Sports Farm Festival hosted at Mahela Farm, Letsitele, over the past weekend.

The event, hosted by Mopani District lived up to its expectations, as teams from the Greater Tzaneen Municipality put everything on the line to conquer the day and emerge victorious. The festival gave an

opportunity to more than ten

teams in Mopani to compete in both netball and soccer.

According to a senior manager for the department of sports, arts and culture, Mr Junior Ramashu, the main objective of the festival was to unearth sporting talents, assist participants in identifying their sporting capacity and ensuring that farm communities are empowered in taking part in the mainstream sporting codes.

He said, “the department aims to select players who will represent the province in national colours. The programme is run in every district in the province to select the best suitable teams”.

Ramashu emphasised that the other priority for this initiative is to develop skills and to keep most participants away from drugs and alcohol abuse. “Training will be provided to all the selected players and referees, in order to develop talent and skills. We are also aiming to combat the problem of drugs, alcohol and educating them on the importance of using condoms”, said Ramashu.

Finalists Unifruit beat APC Highlanders in the male soccer division while Letaba Citrus claimed victory over Rooikoppies in the fi nals of the female soccer division. Meanwhile, Laparisa from the Greater Tzaneen was crowned overall winner in netball.

“The season of failure is the best time for sowing the seeds of success.” — Paramahansa Yogananda

Seisoenale Studente!

Seisoenale

sal afsteek.
