We are pleased to welcome competitors, clubs and guests to the Thermenland Open 2013 in

Croatia. Croatia and Orienteering Club Međimurje will be hosting this event for the first time.

Thermenland Open 2013 will be held in Varaždin County which is located in the north part of the

Croatia with Varaždin and Varaždinske Toplice as the host cities.

We want to organize challenging Thermenland Open respecting the idea of orienteering without

borders. Only a few weeks before entering the European Union, we are happy to invite competitors

to our beautiful terains and new maps.

We follow both - the tradition of organizing the competition near spa and the tradition of our club

events – “Memorijal 7. gardijske brigade“ and “Orienteering Triangle“.

1. Varaždin County

Varaždin County is famous for its Baroque splendour, its music and art, and its unspoilt wild-life and unique scenery. In the region between the River Drava and the forested slopes of Ravna Gora, Kalnik and Ivanšćica, the highest Zagorje mountain, lies

a wealth of Croatia's historic and cultural heritage. The Varaždin area boasts so many tourist spots that it is one of the most attractive

destinations in Croatia. The region has been inhabited from time immemorial, as witness the world-famous Vindija cave, which contains the first traces of prehistoric man in Europe.

There are countless churches, from the small one in Lepoglava's Purga, decorated with Ranger's frescoes, to Varaždin's splendid Baroque cathedral, numerous manors, such as Maruševec, wonderful ornamental parks, like the Opeka Arboretum, and

many castles (Batthyany in Ludbreg, and the Old Castle of Varaždin, for instance). One of the most magnificent places to see, medieval Trakošćan, is the pearl of Hrvatsko

(Croatian) Zagorje, situated on a hill and surrounded by a forest-park and a lake, where a nature-trail provides peace and relaxation. An exhibition inside the castle documents the history of the area.

In the past, people built many settlements on the friendly edges of the Pannonian Plain where picturesque hills begin to rise. The largest and best-preserved of these,Varaždin,

was once the Croatian capital, the seat of the ban and the Croatian parliament,and is now the economic and cultural centre of the country. Also famous is Varaždinske Toplice, Croatia's oldest thermal spa, which for centuries attracted the cream of

European society and is still a famous watering-place and recreation-centre. Varaždin itself, 800 years old, has one of the best-preserved medieval town-centres in

Europe: a heritage proudly displayed in the city’s many museums and galleries.

5. Event Centre and Accommodation

During Competition we will provide official accommodation in Varaždinske Toplice and Varaždin in sport halls/schools (on hard floor), parking place for camper vans and camping place for tents. Informations about booking and fees will be published on competition web page. 7. Terrain Prologue stage: City streets and parks, the old city ramparts MTBO stage: Medium hilly area with roads and paths network. Forest, vineyards and open areas. WRE stage: Varied relief with rich contour details, holes and depresions. Forest is of good runability. The terrain has a rich road and path network. Medium hilly area, partly open. Night stage: City streets and parks, spa. Medium hilly, partly in forest. Chasing start stage: Hilly area, partly rocky and very steep. Forest is with good runability. The hills surround the beautiful Trakošćan lake. Above the lake rises the Trakošćan castle. TrailO stage: Terrain near the Trakošćan castle and the lake along the paths acceptable for wheel chair users.

10. Control punching system

The SPORTident electronic timing system will be used for all stages (except for TrailO stage). Additionally, punchers (manual punching pins) and papers with control number will also be used as back-up. You should put your SI number in online entry form. For trailO stage special control cards will be used. .

11. Prizes

Competitors will recive medals and special prizes for : - Prologue stage - MTBO stage - TrailO stage - Individual Thermenland ranking (Combined results of stages 2,3 and 4) - WRE ranking event (only Elite) - Croatian Long Distance Championship (only Croatian runners)

The best all-round compettitor will recive Orienteering Triangle Cup and special prize.

The best club will recive Memorijal 7.gbr „PUMA“ Cup and special prize.
