BULLDOG
NEWSLETTER A publication of the Edmond Memorial High School Parent Organization
April 2019 Edition
There is a feeling that occurs around a school building once spring break has come and gone; where
students and faculty look toward the end of the school year with a sense of both urgency and excitement for
what lies ahead. With graduation just around the corner, one chapter ends and another begins as we say
“goodbye” to the class of 2019 and “hello” to our future Bulldogs who will be joining us next school year. On
a personal note, it has been the greatest honor of my career in serving as the principal of Edmond Memorial.
I have enjoyed collaborating with the best faculty and staff in the state, and I have equally enjoyed getting to
know and work with your students you have shared with us. I look forward to the future as we continue to
work together to provide the best opportunities for your child and continue to follow our mission for “high
levels of learning for all”.
We had another great year for Swine Week! Our hard working students helped raise over $587,000 for Boys
and Girls Club of Oklahoma County and their plans for a new teen center to help serve the needs of their
kids. Swine Week is such an important time for our Bulldog Family when we are all able to come together to
support a very deserving cause. Thank you to all of our students, staff, families, and community partners for
supporting one of Edmond Memorial’s most important traditions. It really does take us all working together
each year to continue this important effort.
The Edmond Memorial Team would like to thank everyone for their patience as we continue to improve our
parking situation and navigate our construction projects. Although we are all excited about our new football
and track stadiums, we will need to deal with the reality of construction interference around the campus until
completion. We will be getting information out soon concerning parking for next school year.
Please continue to partner with us as we help your students stay focused and goal oriented as this school
year comes to an end. Infinite Campus is an excellent way to keep up-to-date on your child’s progress in
classes. Please feel free to contact us if you need help getting logged on to the system. The testing season
begins this month for juniors and AP students. We ask that you pay close attention to communication
through your email of testing dates. Thank you for your assistance in making sure our students remain
motivated to achieve to the best of their abilities.
Thank you again for a great year at EMHS. This school is a special
place for so many. We wish all of our Bulldog families a great end of the
school year and an exciting summer. August is just around the corner
and we look forward to the future in the 2019-2020 school year!
Sincerely,
Anthony Rose, Principal

All Chromebooks, protective cases and chargers must be turned in (dates to
be announced). The Chromebooks must be cleaned, cleared of user
profile . Any damage will be assessed at the time they are turned in.

Each year A Chance to Change comes to Memorial and runs their educational small group, called A Chance to SUCCEED. This group addresses topics such as strengthening communication skills, building positive relationships, and more. If your student is interested in participating in this group, please pick up a permission slip in the main counseling office and return it to Ms. Sharp, the Student Assistance Counselor.
If your child participates in the food pantry backpack program, please send any of the backpacks you may still have at home back to the counseling office, as we are currently out of backpacks to refill for weekly delivery. If your student does not currently receive a bag each week, but your family could benefit from the aide this program provides, please let Ms. Sharp in the counseling office know, so she may get your student on the list for weekly deliveries. We only ask that the bags we delivery get returned each Monday so we continue to have bags to pass out to students in need. Over spring break, members of Memorial's awarding winning newspaper traveled to Washington D.C. to take a class at the Newseum and tour the sights. Places visited included the Library of Congress, Arlington National Cemetery, The Kennedy Center, The Capitol, and many more. Favorites of the staff's included the Newseum where they learned about fake news and the importance of the press in history and the laying of the wreath and hearing Taps played at Arlington National Cemetery.
Congratulations to our honorable mention StudentCam winners! They were honored by C-SPAN!!
Hope Suttles, Alyvea Sloan and Grace Fox received $250 as honorable mention winners for their documentary, "Has America Changed? Obergefell v. Hodges."
Ford Burgess and Kaylynn Warren received $250 as honorable mention winners for their documentary, "Guns and America."

The EMHS Bands are knee-deep in contest season, but stopped to enjoy Spring Break at Disney! They were able to participate in an incredible evening of live movie scoring as part of the Disney Performing Arts program, and received the Mouse Ears to prove it. A good time was had by all! All three concert bands will be performing for OSSAA State Contest during the week of April 8th and the EMHS Jazz Collective and the JV Jazz Band will be performing at OSSAA Jazz Band Contest on April 24th. The students have worked hard all semester and we look forward to great performances all around. OSSAA State Solo & Ensemble Contest will be held at OSU on April 17th. 36 of our band students/ensembles earned a Superior or Excellent rating at the District contest level in March and 22 will advance to the State Contest. Reaching this performance level takes commitment and perseverance. We are very proud of all these students! The year will wrap with the Spring Jazz Bands in concert on May 7th, the Band Banquet on May 11th, and the Spring Concert Bands performing on May 14th. Oh, and the Annual Mattress Sale fundraiser will be on May 4th! It’s been another year of flexibility as our entire program has had to adapt yet again to the major construction challenges around the campus. But thanks to the tireless leadership and creativity of Director Jeff Jahnke and the rest of the band staff we will finish the year strong as we FINALLY MOVE INTO our new Bulldog Band facility! Great year, Bulldog Band!!

Quickly looming ahead are the last days of school for our 2018-2019 school year. We appreciate and thank
everyone who donated to our iCARE Matching Challenge. $6,348.00 went directly to Teacher/Staff Grants and
to the Principal's Fund (which helps pay for Professional Development).
We are so excited that we were able to give back to our school and it was only possible through the
generosity of our Bulldog Community - Thank you for caring and giving! We are currently raising funds for next
school year with our 2019 iCARE Challenge, (formerly the “Bulldog Campaign”) and our goal is $10,000.
Please see the last page of this newsletter for more information and details on how you can give and make a
difference today!
On Administrative Professionals’ Day, we treated our fabulous EMHS administrative assistants to lunch at
Charleston’s while MPO volunteers covered their positions. We want to recognize these wonderful ladies who
welcome you as you walk in our school and make sure that the school runs efficiently behind the
scenes. They also support the MPO in so many ways - we are grateful for all they do for us! To round out the
year, we will have our last Staff Appreciation lunch during Teacher Appreciation Week in May. We love being
able to boost the morale of our staff and bring smiles to their faces. They give so much of themselves to our
students and our school and it's a privilege to support them and let them know how much they are valued and
appreciated.
In July, we will begin recruiting volunteers for SPUD, which is scheduled for the second week of August, 9am -
1pm. What is SPUD? It's short for Schedule Pick Up Days and it is the biggest, most labor intensive activity that
the MPO does. SPUD stretches over 4 days and consists of 64 volunteer slots (8 volunteers/shift, 2 shifts/day, 4
days). In order for SPUD to run smoothly for the 2300+ students who will come to pick up their schedules, it is
essential to have all volunteer slots filled. Please make a note on your calendar and consider volunteering and
making a difference! The MPO will also provide a Back-to-School Lunch for teachers and staff just before the
first day of school.
Thank you again for supporting the efforts of the Memorial Parent
Organization. We are proud to be a partner with our school and
we appreciate the administration for their ongoing encouragement
and involvement in the MPO. We love that we can work together to
achieve more for our school!
The next and last MPO meeting for the year is on Thursday, April
11th at 12:30 p.m. in Counselor’s Conference room. Please come be
part of our very active parent organization and make a difference for
our school and kids!
Have a great summer!
