DKV100 Nirmana

The course provides three main skills for the students. The first thing they will learn is the understanding of dimensional shape and form, the second skill to be learned is their sensitivity to understand the presence of two dimensional and three-dimensional space that surrounds them in many shapes and forms, lastly the students will apply the basic understanding of the shape and -form they learned to apply those two dimensional and three dimensional elements into various materials to be presented as a design work.

INQF (Indonesian National Qualification Framework) Level: 6After completing this course, Science and Technology and Theory can be applied to the Visual Communication Designer profession at the primary level, where the Primary Competencies are:1. Students are able to analyze (C4) material, structure, strength, comfort, perception and function towards two-dimensional and three-dimensional forms.

1. Students understand (C1) basic knowledge of elements and basic principles of art and design that are closely related to ideas and creativity.2. Students are able to understand (C2) various terminologies regarding to the basic principles of art and design.3. Students are able to utilize (C3) constituents, elements, and basic visual principles in the realm of art and design.4. DKV101 History of Art and Design

This course studies the history of civilization development from pre-historic era to the modern times and its impact in design. This course examines how culture developed from nomadic ways of living, settling, and the growth of trading that penetrates into human life and how arts and design were applied in many of prehistoric aspects of life that slowly turn into a more complex form as it goes through the eras. by the end of this course, students are expected to understand and gain basic understanding of creative thinking as basic survival like their predecessors.

After completing the History of Art and Design course, science and technology and theory can be applied to the Visual Communication Design profession at the Basic level where the main competencies are:1. Students are able to apply (C3) the search for sources of inspiration from cultural works in their creation.

1. Students can describe (C2) the process of forming civilizations and cultures from the simple to the complex level.2. Students are able to explain (C2) the function of artwork from social, individual and physical needs.3. DKV102 Drawing Principles

This course provides basic understanding and skill in drawing shapes using the basic principles and techniques that serves into a drawing according to its function and objectives. In this course, students will learn to draw objects using basic shapes, applying perspective in their drawings, human and animal anatomy, and a complete drawing where all the basics are applied in one artwork. By the end of this course, students are required to make a full picture that applies the theory, principles, and techniques they have learned at the beginning of the lecture.

DKV103 Typography Principles

This course lean about typography as a medium to deliver information in visual communication design on the basic level with an understanding of the main use of letters in design. In this course, students will learn to understand the history of typography development, recognize the shape and characters of letters, choose and arrange the letters to use in their design. By the end of the course, students will be asked to make a visual works of typography on a measurable media.

After completing this course, Science and Technology and Theory can be applied to the Visual Communication Design profession at the basic level where the main competencies are:1. Students are able to arrange (C4) letters in designing design work effectively and efficiently.

DKV105 Photography Principles

This course studies the basics of photography as a whole process from the theory to the application in the field of work. In this course, students will study the use of cameras and their supporting devices and photo-taking techniques for products. At the end of the course, students will produce photos intended to convey advertising messages.

DKV105 Computer Graphic for Design

The Graphic Computer for Graphic Design course learns about the use of software in designing through tools in software in order to produce finalization of visual works or visual assets for further use according to the needs of visual communication design. In this course, students will learn to process images and text in vector and raster graphics, digital imaging, and digital painting. At the end of the course Graphic Computer for Graphic Design, students are required to create a portfolio containing works that have been designed and arranged their design neatly.

UM162 Pancasila

Student will learn about Pancasila as the basic values of philosophy (philosiphische grondslag), nation’s soul (volksgeist) or nation’s identity (innerself of nation), NKRI ideology and the real way of life from our people/nation.

Students holistically understand values in Pancasila as the character and nations’ identity that sets Indonesia apart from other nations/countries. This comprehension about Pancasila will be an excellent tools and the foundation to protect nationalism as we face various and greater challenges towards globalisation.

DKV200 Visual Communication Design 1

Visual Communication Design 1 course studies the design of visual works by applying the concept of visual literacy and visual storytelling in the scope of visual communication design. Through the process, students are expected to be able to apply and produce communicative works from the process of extracting ideas and meanings in accordance with the themes and concepts that are determined. In this course, students will learn to explore ideas and forms with stylization techniques, create visual works by exploring emotion themes, visual literacy, and visual storytelling. At the end of the course Visual Communication Design 1 students will make visual works on posters as the medium.

DKV201 Illustration

Illustration course provides understanding and skills in making illustrations that are applied through various visual communication media with principles, techniques, narratives, and theme elements at the basic level to be applied and adapted to their functions and objectives. In this course, students will learn about the theory of illustration, namely the concept of illustration, illustration function, and types of illustrations as well as the practice of illustration work in the form of visual style exploration, illustrations based on narratives, posters and visual journals. At the end of the Illustration course, students are required to design an illustration book as the final form of the material they have learned beforehand.

DKV202 Design and Culture

The Design and Culture course learns about the culture that are varies in Indonesia archipelago. In this course, student will learn all Indonesian culture that is rich in ethnic value that are influenced by Chinese and Indian culture. So, at the end of this course, students are expected to be able to analyze traditional art works of the archipelago as a source of inspiration for students in designing creative and innovative modern designs.

DKV203 Communication Theory

Communication Theory courses provide students with three abilities, namely the communication process, sender and receiver. The communication process material provides students with the ability to recognize the communication hierarchy between the one sends the message and who receives the message. Communication flow material provides students with the ability to recognize barriers to conduct effective communication. Material Channel provides students with the ability to identify appropriate and effective message delivery channels (mediums). Medium that explored more using B.

DKV204 Introduction to Creativity

Introduction to Creativity course trains students to apply the design process by understanding the creativity’s steps. In the process, students will learn about creating and imagining as process that is formed through memory that is based on their experience in order to get a solution. At the end of this course students will be tested for their understanding through the completion of a simple problem with visual solutions and written examinations where students are expected to be able to apply the creative process in every design of their creative works.

BD300 Visual Communication Design 2

This course studies three things, namely visual visualization, layout and print production. Visual narrative provides students with the ability to visualize design that has plot and plot. Layout or layout material provides students with the ability to compose graphic elements in accordance with the rules of print and digital media. Print and digital production materials equip students with knowledge about printed and digital production from the design work that has been designed. Design projects that are handled are no longer singlepage but multiple pages. At the end of the course, students will create a magazine project in which is a visual blend of narrative, layout and print production.

The term Creative Business is a phenomenon that occurs from combining the understanding of creative concepts and the design and economics of entrepreneurship in the design profession. This course introduces a basic theory of economics in a concise and concise manner, which is useful for creative people, especially designers, to be able to plunge into the world of entrepreneurial design and creative professions. The elements of economic knowledge that will refer to the market and analyze it, how the structure in the world of design, especially in advertising, and ethics in the design business are needed in the designer profession.

Visual Analysis courses provide students with the ability to analyze visual communication design work. Visual analysis performed using semiotics approach. The semiotics approach can equip students the ability to analyze the quality of the practice of signs and meanings of visual communication design work. The ability to analyze visual (decoding) can compensate for the ability of students who are accustomed to designing visual communication (encoding), so that afterwards have accuracy in making a sign. At the end of the lecture, students will analyze a message visualization which is then written in a scientific paper.

Introduction to Marketing courses learn about the economic basis for entrepreneurial development in the creative economy. In this course, students will learn the basic elements of economic theory in a simple and easy to understand manner, understand and analyze market segmentation, find out about matters that affect consumer behavior in purchasing a product or using a service, business research, marketing mix or marketing mix, after the introduction of the practical basis of economics, students learn the basics of branding a product or service. This 3D Digital Visualization course learns about the basic visualization of 3-dimensional digital objects. In this course, students learn 3D modeling techniques starting from basic understanding of objects in coordinate axis x, y, z so that they can produce 3-dimensional objects by applying textures and rendering with proper lighting and good camera composition. At the end of the 3D Digital Visualization course, students will be able to produce 3-dimensional objects that can be applied to various media.

This course studies the design of identity for a brand. In this course, students will solve visual

identity problems for a brand by determining their brand essence and personality which is the

basis for designing a visual identity for a brand. Stages of visual identity design will refer to

the method that has been put forward by experts, so that it can be applied to various media

and rules in their use. At the end of the lecture, students will handle the work of changing a

This course provides students with three abilities, namely Identity, Branding, Media Production. Brand material as an identity is expressed to various media as a form of communication between products and consumers, from this course students are provided with the ability to analyze product identity. Branding materials also train students' ability to be able to plan brand activation from the concept of visual ideas to applications in various media. Media production material provides students with the ability to produce branding media in various channels according to their needs.

Media Production Techniques are courses that discuss and teach how the production process is made. MPT discusses in terms of theory and practice, from a design concept to a real form or model of the design concept. The discussion revolved around print-media production; such as digital printing, offset printing. In 3D modeling media, students will learn how to make a miniature using a 3D printer. Making point of purchase, which is needed to branding a product or service.

This course study the application of elements and design principles to convey information to digital media. In this course, students will learn about the development of digital media and the characteristics of each media’s audience, the basic principles of animation, motion graphics and videography, so that they can produce and manage graphic animation works in the form of TV Bumpers, TVC, Credit Titles, Creative Ads, Superimpose Images, Superimpose Animation, Public Service Ads (PSA), Web and Fine Art Animation. Visual Communication Design 4 courses study the design of visual communication design for a brand communication. This course facilitates students to understand and to produce sounds that are applied in various form of visual communication design output. The student will study about foley, sound effect, making background music, and dubbing that later can be applied in many forms of media such as jingle, apps, games and commercials.

The Design Research course studies the types and methods of research based on visual communication design. In this course, student will study the methods and stages of the quantitative and quantitative research processes, data search techniques and analyze research data. The Design Project courses are applied courses and field practices where 70% are practiced and 30% are theory. In this course, students will learn how to get a design project from beginning to end. This course trains students to be involve in a face to face activity with clients, how to communicate with clients, and solve problems that occur in the field from various factors, such as anger management, conflict management, time management that leads to a tight dead line, expected design specifications clients, as well as techniques in presentation and ethics in the business world and creative world. At the end of the Design Project course students are required to produce a design work based on concepts and thoughts that are in accordance with the client's brief.

This course provides knowledge of the fundamentals of Intellectual Property Rights to UMN DKV students who do not have legal background. This subject approach is a combination of theory [normative-regulative IPR] with cases of [case studies IPR] as the basic concept. The substance of the material is adjusted to the field of concentration [Graphic Design, Animation and Digital Cinematography] UMN DKV itself. To be able to complete the understanding of the UMN DKV students towards IPR, they will also discuss the Industrial Design, Layout Design of Integrated Circuits, Patent Rights, Trademark Rights, Trade Secrets and Geographical Indications as a unit of IPR in Indonesia.

The visual communication design 5 course studies the design of visual communication design for a campaign. This course will study the process of creative and communicative campaign design stages starting from problem analysis, developing campaign strategies, designing campaign message strategies, visualizing campaign concepts and designing the right campaign media for the target audience. Experimental Design courses are courses that teach methods in contemporary art and design traditions that are experimental or trial. The experimental art method in its developmental reality in more than a decade has been widely used in the world of design to convey messages more implicitly, for example for the needs of commercial campaigns and social campaigns with the aim of building the depth of the emotional relations of the target audience. Referring to the meaning of the word 'experimental', in this course students are encouraged, challenged, and given ample space to create an art development in the design context through creative and new approaches both technically invisible and conceptually or an invisible system with cross-disciplinary references.

Final Project courses study the implementation of design in design methods. Students will make scientific assignments in the form of a study thesis or design thesis.
