    Within these 4 sectors, 28 high opportunity occupations will add

    more than 12,000 new jobs within the next ten years.

    These jobs require only two years or less of post-secondary

    education.

    They pay 25% more than the median annual wage for all jobs.

    They are expected to add at least 100 new jobs over the next

    decade.

    These occupations present important opportunities for people of

    color to increase wages and reach self sufficiency.

    Demographic Analysis of Health Care,

    Manufacturing, and Skilled Trades Occupations

  • A few definitions

    Region: Includes workers who work in the 7-county Portland metropolitan area.

    Employed workforce: people actively working in the region during the time the ACS was administered (2006-2010).

    Low- and mid-skill occupations: those with education requirements of 2 years of college or less according to the Employment Department.

    Low- and high-wage occupation: those with median annual wage below or above the median for all occupations in the region.

    High Opportunity Occupation: those requiring 2 or fewer years of post-high school education, paying a median wage of at least $48,303 (125% of median) and anticipated growth of 100 or more new openings over the ten year projection.

    English Language Learners: those who report speaking English less than “very well.”

    People of color includes anyone who identifies as any race other than white, including those identifying as Hispanic or Latino.
