BUILDING THE FUTUREAfter School Matters is building a bright

future for Chicago and its neighborhoods

by supporting our teens—those currently in

our programs, and those we hope to reach in

the future. Through transformative program

opportunities in the arts, communications

and leadership, STEM, and sports, Chicago’s

next generation of leaders is creating solid

foundations for their own futures.

This past year, we engaged more than 18,000

teens across Chicago through our nationally-

recognized programs that help them gain

critical skills for college, careers, and beyond.

Every day in our programs, teens are striving

to not only achieve success for themselves

but also strengthen their communities.

These teens are Chicago’s future leaders—

entrepreneurs, changemakers, artists, activists,

chefs, engineers, coaches, and more. With

the support of After School Matters’ devoted

community, we will realize our vision of

building a stronger Chicago. Because when

we invest in our teens, they reinvest in their

communities.

TOGETHER, WE ARE BUILDING THE FUTURE OF CHICAGO...TODAY.

Officials Break Ground on New Teen-Centric Facility at Gately Park

In August 2018, Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Chicago

Park District General Superintendent Michael Kelly

joined After School Matters, Exelon Corporation, local

and state officials and community members to break

ground on the Gately Indoor Track & Field, located at

744 E 103rd Street.

BUILDING THE FUTURE

Housed within this new, world-class athletic acility built by the Chicago Park District will be After School Matters’

state-of-the-art 24,000-square-foot space, exclusively dedicated to Chicago teens and After School Matters

programming.

This is new building represents our third dedicated neighborhood space for Chicago teens, building on the positive

impact we’ve seen Gallery37 downtown and the Lutz Center in Belmont Cragin have with our teens. This project is

crucial to After School Matters’ longer-term growth strategy of replicating our model of dedicated teen programming

spaces, particularly in underserved communities, to continue to build the future of Chicago through supporting our

city’s teens. It’s expected to open for programming in 2021.

“Chicago’s young people need and deserve the best

opportunities to help them explore their passions

and find their futures. Thanks to the leadership of

our entire community of supporters and partners—

especially the Chicago Park District, the Mayor’s

Office, and our Board Chair Mellody Hobson—After

School Matters will now have a dedicated space on

the South Side of Chicago intentionally designed for

teenagers to learn, grow, and discover their potential

in a safe and supportive environment.”

— Mary Ellen Caron, Chief Executive Officer of After School Matters

Chicago Bulls’ Zach LaVine and TheRoomPlace Surprise After School Matters Family with Home Makeover

The Chicago Bulls, Zach LaVine, and TheRoomPlace teamed up in December with

After School Matters teen Marquis Johnson to surprise his grandmother with new

furniture for every room in her home, and a Christmas tree with presents for the

family. Featured on ABC’s “Good Morning America,” LaVine and the Bulls, long-

time After School Matters supporters of After School Matters, coordinated with

teen Marquis Johnson to bring holiday joy to his grandmother and their family.

LaVine and Johnson shopped for furniture and gifts, wrapped presents, set up

the house and then brought in his grandmother for the grand reveal, making it

an unforgettable Christmas.

Lisa W. Wardell, President and CEO of Adtalem Global Education, Donates $1 Million to Chicago’s Teens

The highlight of After School Matters Annual Gala on September 24, 2018 was a generous

donation by Lisa W. Wardell, President and CEO of Adtalem Global Education. Wardell

donated $1 million to After School Matters toward the construction of our new facility

at Gately Park on Chicago’s South Side. Lisa made the announcement alongside After

School Matters Board Chair Mellody Hobson.

Wardell is the sole African American woman leader of a FORTUNE 1000 company. She

believes supporting programs like After School Matters will make a difference for our

youth and the future business world.

I was just like the kids in After School Matters and know

the life-changing value that one area of focus, one person

or group can make. We owe it to all teenagers to provide

opportunities that give them confidence and an ability to

envision where their lives may go,” said Wardell.
