Moana is destined to do it as the ocean chose her. Her father forbids her but her Gramma Tala encouraged her. Gramma Tala doesn’t have authority to let anyone from the village to sail beyond the reef, but her influence over Moana as her grandmother is strong enough to give her the courage to follow her heart because Moana trusts and loves her.

Moana, on the other hand, should not be mainly burdened by the problems of their tribe, to lead them and to try to survive with the current crisis; instead, it is his father’s responsibility as the tribe’s chieftain.


However, Moana decided that she can help and can do the task herself even if she doesn’t have authority. She just believes in her heart and her grandma that she can restore the heart of Te Fiti.

She went ahead and eventually succeeded in finding Maui and restoring the heart of Te Fiti despite challenges and life threatening experiences along her journey. And thus, help save the world and became everybody’s heroin.

The story tells us that we can make a difference even if we are ordinary. We may be in the middle or below the power spectrum, but with humility, enthusiasm, and belief in oneself, we can find our power within that can save our own life and the life of others.

R e s e a r c h e r s h a v e found fear as the core o f n e e d i n e s s . A n d this finding was also concluded by attachment researchers who, also examine needy behavior.

Based on the attachment theory, the assumption is that, all of us have a primary need to connect. This basic need to connect has been wired

into our core. Humans are social beings and inside our core, we need another human being to connect with for survival and well-being.

Because of this wiring, our brain identifies emotional isolation as a life and death situation when this registers at the most primitive areas of our brain the amygdala.

This is being called by scientist as the “primal panic”. Human beings who experience abandonment and neglect when they were just little children will have little faith at emotional closeness to endure.

And as they become adults, they will try their best to attempt to silence this “primal panic” in their brain by attempting to do anything they can to keep connection. And thus, they become needy.

Therefore, it is not need that forms neediness but fear. It is our fear that our own needs for connection won’t be met. This is what brings us into despair and neediness. And for us to overcome neediness is to disentangle this need for connection from fear.


How do you disentangle fear from the human’s primal need to connect?

The following simple steps are helpful.

1 . U s e s t r e s s management skills. Identify the cause of the problem. If you identify that the cause is fear and not loneliness or the desire for contact, one simple way to escape this feelings of neediness is to use stress management s k i l l s o f w h i c h

breathing is one of them. Other stress management activities include running, meditating, etc. These activities can reduce your anxiety as well as your desire to act out of neediness.

2. Get connected. This is a healthier version of dependency as this involves valuing of relationships. It is a n a c t i v e a n d direct way of getting connected. When you m a ke c l e a r y o u r requests and not just blindly reaching o u t t o someone without knowing what you are reaching for.


3. Practice emotional mindfulness. Before doing anything when feelings of neediness show its head, try to calm, sit down and write about the feelings you’re having.

Try to identify if you are just afraid of being alone. Acknowledge and understand that

feeling and do not attempt the first impulse of seeking contact. This will help you recognize and express your needs more clearly and eventually help you to tolerate them.

4. Make an inventory of your relationships. Do you attract people who reinforce your neediness? Do you fear that they will lose their interest if you do not call them often or if you’re n o t a l w a y s agreeable with them?

Once you recognize that, you will have clear vision of your behavior and try to remove the fears, which is the cause these feelings of neediness.


5. Take care of your self and try to meet your own needs. The key to overcoming neediness is to respect your needs for connection instead of fearing them.

This will create clarity of intimacy, which will benefit you and others.

6. Become more independent Most of us are co-dependent with our families, friends or the community we belong. If we lose sight of them, we feel weird and weary.

Sometimes our thoughts tell us that we are incomplete if we do not have these people or if we do not grasp these possessions.

And if we keep on clinging on them, then we are unable to compose our lives steadily without the presence of the external factors that we believe we always need to survive.

If we start to become independent, these anxieties will lessen. We must be self-aware and confident in our selves that we can stand up without always asking for help from others.


Being independent means, you know what you want, you know what you are doing, and you know where you are going. It needs self-love and trust so that we may not let others define who we are or dictate us on what we ought to do.

You cannot be self-reliant if you are not having a well relationship with yourself. It requires constant reflection and assessment about what happens to us every day—big or small.

Acknowledging our own needs and working on it alone does not mean we are selfish. It is also a form of self-love for we are communicating with ourselves.

The thing that makes us selfish is when we continue to depend on others to make us happy, fulfilled or provided without even thinking that we are stealing their time and efforts that is supposed to be spent also for their selves.

We can never be contented and actualized if we have never known ourselves well and be joyful because of our own.

Nowadays, people are afflicted with lack of courage. It ’s almost an epidemic going on around us.

This can be manifested in our failure to hold ourselves responsible for our actions and decisions, playing the victim, and failing to honor who we are and what we believe in.

We sometimes wonder, when was the last time that we’ve really been courageous? When we’re so frightened, so anxious and so uncertain about something in our life or a decision we’re about to make. This can rarely happen.

However, our everyday decisions can sometimes influence the course of our experience whether we’re going to face anxiety, stress, danger, pain, or hardships.

And despite all these, being able to move forward regardless of any obstacle we’re facing as well as the willingness to make decisions and live to face all its consequences is real courage. Only those who move beyond obstacles and hardships are considered courageous. Courage is the first human quality. Without it, all the other virtues are nothing because it takes courage to display passion, humility, honorability, integrity, strength, truth, confidence, compassion and all other virtues.

It takes a huge amount of courage to be the person you truly want to be. Before becoming the person you really want to be, you must first face fears, hardships, doubts, etc. Life therefore, needs a lot of courage to be able to live.


How do you develop courage?

1. Use courage often. L ike the musc les , courage gets stronger when it is often exercised. Practice it constantly in your everyday life like trying new things, be different, or face your fears head on. The more you use it, the

stronger it gets and you build more confidence face bigger challenges.

2. Accept the agony. Being courageous means being ready to accept whatever the outcome maybe. It is also taking a risk and acknowledging the fact that something may not go right. Just go ahead and muster the courage to move on. These are just temporary and things will go right once again.


3. Acknowledge and understand that it’s not the absence of fear. Being courageous does not mean absence of fear. Displaying courage while still h a v i n g fe a r s a n d doubts at the same t i m e i s a n o r m a l h u m a n b e i n g

experience. Be courageous anyway!

4. Start small but start somewhere. Taking risks and stepping out of your comfort zone is really daunting.

6. Develop faith and confidence. One of the most important parts of developing courage is “believing in your own self”. Having faith in yourself, faith in a higher power and faith that things will work out fine are great contributions to being courageous. This conf idence comes

from maintaining a positive attitude and visualizing a favorable outcome.

7. Self-control in Trials

Trials loosen the grip of our courage. They are stumbling blocks that tests your tires in the humps of your life and sees how far your courage shall stand.

By the way, where do you stand in the midst of trial?

Do you fight trials thru hatred, resentment, disapproval of self or discouragement? Sure, it’s the easier way! But yes, you’re at the correct place of failing.

Don’t ever welcome these vibes of negativities to worsen the struggling situation. Instead, wear the weapon called “self-control”. This is your protection. This weapon is another type of deeper courage. Courage is the resistance to fear and not the absence of fear as Mark Twain says, and resisting fear involves mind and bodily control.


Self-control is a virtue that only courageous persons possess. It is a process of choosing what is right beyond all false truths convincing around you. It is how we discipline ourselves from breakdowns and discouragements that tries to persuade us for defeat and when we have this special kind of courage to ‘control’ our emotions, we find our etheric place at the right center, at the right pacing.

Practice in your life the weapon called “self-control”. It is your way out. It’s not your careful escape from the realities of trials but it is your protection from all negative charges which will falsely lead your courage into the pit.

8. Practice positivity

This is hard but the harder way is always the right way! Nothing beats a mind full of optimism and positive energies. It always prepares us for victory and joyful relationship with ourselves and with others.

Same with our courage. Our courage is always attracted to positivity and it is needed with thoughts of hope, elevation and confidence. When we’re inspired enough by positive thoughts and drivers, our courage is added time by time and it grows a lot in our lives.

Whether we become courageous by the presence of fear or threat, but we still expect for positive results as outcomes for launching our courage to the next level, thus, looking at positivity is the key to achieve developed courage.


In your life, fill your spaces with positive lifestyle. Your room must be as alive as your soul shall be. Read articles full of hope, dreams, motivating principles or celestial inspirations that widen your ability to courageously see life. Depend on encouraging words and never be consumed by negativities (this doesn’t mean you need to excuse yourself from challenges, it only means being careful of what you should absorb in yourself). Face it!
