This weekend we gather to celebrate 55 years of God’s faithfulness to our University and to each one of us. We do not remember for nostalgia’s sake, but to equip ourselves for our common journey forward, through sharing our individual stories of laughter, heartbreak, faith and the occasional bit of tomfoolery, from the time we spent walking the hallowed paths of Trinity Western. Combined these stories give us a shared history that allows us to approach life’s problems together with a common language.

As you leave this weekend with fond memories of your time as a Trinity Western student, have a mind to take an active role in our community. Be encouraged by God’s steadfastness to the staff, faculty, students, and alumni who make up the Trinity Western family. Be inspired by His work through your fellow alums. Look for opportunities to help each other achieve the mission to be disciples of Jesus Christ, fulfilling the Great Commission, and serving God and people in our daily lives. As students, Trinity Western fostered the development of our hearts and minds. Now as alumni, we have the opportunity to join together alongside current and future students who will similarly be impacted by their time at twu and equipped to serve those who are in need.

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR REPORT

The Alumni Association is very excited about the progress made over the past year to deliver new programs that positively build into the lives of our alumni community. To ensure programs reflect the broader needs of the community, considerable time was spent working with the Board to articulate a clear value proposition for our community. Alumni across demographics were then engaged to test ideas, gather feedback, and garner insight. This equipped us with a clear vision, mission and set of priority issues, and a new strategic plan was developed.

BUILDING AN ECOSYSTEM

Alumni, students and the University are part of an ecosystem-an interconnected network comprised of alumni, students, faculty, families, churches, businesses, and surrounding communities. By fostering a Christ-centred community that generously Offers their time, talents, and treasure for the benefit of all we can THRIVE TOGETHER.

Thriving in the various marketplaces of life doesn’t happen in a vacuum

To help build this ecosystem, the Alumni Association identified three priority issues to tackle over the past year:

• Activate the Network • Improve Legacy Programming • Define, Track, and Measure Alumni Engagement

PRIORITY 1: ACTIVATE THE NETWORK

Currently a fragmented network exists in the shadows. Our goal is to bring visibility to the network and offer practical ways for our community to tap into it for personal and professional enrichment. Our success lies on a grassroots movement on behalf of the community and we are so encouraged to see so many alumni step forward to take ownership and be active participants over the past year. Three pillar programs, in various stages of development, work synergistically to help activate the network.

ALUMNI CHAPTERS

Alumni Chapters are networking groups intended for personal and professional enrichment that play a key role in “breathing life” into the network. Success hinges not on the Alumni Association but on chapter champions. The Alumni Association serves more as a facilitator, assisting with administration, marketing and communications while champions play a pivotal role in leading the chapter and cultivating community.

The Alumni Association is humbled by the willingness of alumni to step forward, launch and lead four chapters during 2016-2017. The Vancouver, Minnesota, Langley and Calgary Chapters have launched to serve the needs of our alumni in the surrounding areas. More than isolated communities, these chapters serve as regional community hubs in our broader network, providing value to the University as well.

MENTORSHIP

CAREER MEETUPS

The transition from university to life after university is arguably one of the most difficult transitions students will face up to this point in their lives. The “real world” confronts recent grads with a multitude of new challenges on various levels (spiritual, emotional, social, vocational, etc.). This is where perception collides with reality, with results that often bring more than a few bumps in the road.

The purpose of the Alumni Mentorship Program is to proactively prepare students for life beyond school. Students will be challenged to integrate their faith and academic learning with real-world experiences so that they will be equipped and ready for the transition from graduation to the workforce. Mentorship provides a key engagement opportunity for alumni to reconnect to the University. A small pilot project is in development for a fall 2017 launch. It will focus on non-businessstreams, although entrepreneurship will be included.

Career Meetups are informal gatherings where alumni, alumni led companies, and alumni friendly companies connect with students in meetups to help them explore career paths through internships, develop professional competencies, and cultivate personalized networks that shape their professional journey. These meetups help the Alumni Association build out a directory of alumni friendly companies willing to work together for the benefit of all. The goal is to identify companies across industries and bring visibility to the career aspect of the network, creating a two way funnel of talent and opportunity in the process.

During the spring of 2017, a TECHNOLOGY MEETUP took place in ALUMNI HALL, where 15 companies presented 24 internship opportunities across disciplines to students in a mixer-style networking event.

PRIORITY 2: IMPROVE LEGACY PROGRAMMING

The Alumni Association embraces the opportunity to improve upon some of the wonderful programs and events launched in years past. By engaging with our alumni on an ongoing basis to solicit feedback and ideas, we have sought to find ways in which we can better serve the needs of the community.

Alumni Weekend 2017 re-imagines the ALUMNI DISTINCTION AWARDS by opening it up to the broader community and presenting it as a signature red carpet gala. The Alumni Distinction Awards provides the community with the opportunity to come together for an elegant evening of celebration to honour those alumni who we see making an exceptional difference in the world and in their communities. The gala will take place at SKY HANGAR in Pitt Meadows, one of the most stunning contemporary venues in the Lower Mainland.

PRIORITY 3: DEFINE, TRACK & MEASURE ALUMNI ENGAGEMENT

To best understand how we can serve the alumni community with programs and services that add clear value, it’s important the Alumni Association has clarity around how we define, track, and measure engagement. This knowledge is critical as it provides valuable insight into how we can strategical plan for success. The Alumni Association took a big step forward this year with the deployment of a new Salesforce database. This database, once developed to meet our needs, will allow us to clearly define engagement and better identify opportunities to strategically engage alumni. Over the summer, we worked with Traction on Demand, a consulting firm with unparalleled expertise in using the Salesforce platform to improve business processes, to design a solution that will track and measure identified Key Performance Indicators (kpi’s) related to alumni engagement. With a solution design in hand, we are now equipped to proceed to the development phase.

Tremendous opportunities lie before us. As we venture forth, we continue to invite members of our alumni community to join us on the journey. By working together, we can truly can achieve great things.

Ecclesiastes 4:12And though a man might prevail against one who is alone, two will withstand him—a threefold cord is not quickly broken.

Blessings,
