Flexible Scheduling: A Way to Balance Work and Life

Allows balance of personal and family obligations with their work

Can also reduce your facilities footprint, as well as reducing traffic on the roads and demand on parking infrastructure.

“…(T)hese strategies are proven to empower employees to be productive, regardless of location and time…” – Executive Order 16-07

Presentation Notes
The U.S. Office of Personnel Management (2013) found that an employee’s decision to leave ends up costing the agency anywhere from 90% to 200% of the employee’s annual salary. The findings here suggest that family-friendly programs are not a panacea but that agencies can still reduce some of the costs associated with turnover by enhancing employee satisfaction with family-friendly programs in general and alternative work schedules, child care programs, and employee assistance programs in particular. – Source : https://doi.org/10.1177/0091026016652424

Telework: Changing how we think about “the workplace”

Increasing telework requires agency support and mutual trust. Equipment, training and connectivity are all important, but without addressing workplace culture, the benefits of telework won’t manifest

“…(U)sing technology to support a mobile workforce will allow us to be more adaptive and responsive to customers…” –Executive Order 16-07

Telework can increase responsiveness, productivity and employee engagement.

Infants at Work: Bringing babies into WA state workplaces since 2015 Parents bring infants to

work between the ages of 6 weeks and 6 - 9 months.

24 state agencies have an IAW policy

Now a recruitment tool

“…(T)o be an employer of choice and better support the needs of multiple generations, we must provide flexibility in how, when, and where work gets done so that employees can have work/life balance…” – Executive Order 16-07

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Agencies differ on: Whether the program allows for full-time or part-time use Whether employees must be in “good standing” for performance Whether the program allows for multiples (twins, triplets, etc.) How many caretakers are required and who those caretakers can be The level of safety review required to bring your infant to work Who approves the infant program The steps required to end the program early Where the baby can be within the workplace (public meetings, etc.) The supervisor’s role in the program What to do with the dirty diapers (this is the biggest concern!!)

IAW: Benefits for the Employer and Worker Employees may choose to return to

work sooner Increased retention Increased employee loyalty Morale booster Lower health care costs and less

sick leave used“This program supports a positive work/life balance, honors the employee’s contribution to the department, and shows that the department practices what we encourage in our communities; supporting parent and infant bonding, parental well-being, healthy infant development, and breastfeeding.”- Dept of Health website

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Compelling parental benefits: in an effort to be an employer of choice we had to face the hard reality that we don’t offer paid time off for baby bonding. A new parent can use their vacation or sick leave but FML and Washington’s FL acts only allow for unpaid time off. With businesses like Microsoft, Starbucks and others located in Washington and offering great parental leave options, we needed to offer something to try to compete. Infant health and wellbeing: studies show that the more time an infant spends with their parents and breastfeeding directly positively correlates with the health and wellbeing of the infant both in their first year as well as later in life. Shorter transition time: parents indicated they were returning to work sooner than they would have without the program and also indicated feeling more engaged in the work once they returned as they were not worrying about how their child was doing.
