Building engineering

The evacuated solar tubes, which create the building curves, generate up to 70% of the water heating requirements and provide solar shielding by absorbing 93% of solar energy for the Law, Business, and Design School on the Northumbria University city campus.

Atkins offers complete in-house services on site work activities, which facilitates effective coordination and management of all project elements. Our areas of expertise include, but are not limited to, land surveying, right-of-way surveys, biological surveys, detailed site plans, drainage planning and design, utilities planning and design, all regulatory approvals and permits, mitigation planning, environmental surveys, pavement and vehicle parking design, infrastructure budget cost estimates, contract bid analysis, and construction phase services.

Commissioning

Effective commissioning helps to ensure that buildings operate at optimal efficiency and that systems and equipment life, as well as occupant comfort, are maximized. For existing structures, Atkins offers energy audits and retro-commissioning services that can help to verify operating conditions and reduce operating costs. Our professionals have the technical expertise and skills to lead commissioning efforts and assist with the associated documentation and process requirements.

Building information modeling

Building information modeling (BIM) is the result of owner requests for optimized buildings with more cost-effective operations and maintenance. Atkins has been following the BIM movement since its inception and has proactively learned about and implemented BIM on our projects since 2005. BIM enables building data to be compiled and maintained in an intelligent, coordinated manner. Once created, the BIM model can be used for construction drawings, visualizations, analysis, coordination and collaboration, construction simulation, clash detection, cost estimating, and many other downstream processes including facilities and asset management.
