Dear Congregation,

On behalf of the City of Brandenburg and the City Council, I would like to take the opportu-nity to thank the members of Brandenburg United Methodist Church for their

work beautifying our town for both citizens and visi-tors. The corner of Broadway and Main Street, which your group undertook, looks remarkably better for any visitors headed to our Riverfront Park. With this type of community involvement, the City is abe to fo-cus on other areas in town which may need attention. We would also thank you on behalf of the Brandenburg Police Dept. for the cookies “Baked with Love” which were given in appreciation of their service to our community. Policing is often a thank-less job, so it is always nitce to be recognized for their service. As the Mayor, it is always a wonderful thing to see our churches, businesses, and citizens working together for the betterment of our community.

Thank you again,

Ronnie Joyner Scotty Singleton Mayor Chief of Police

Dear Church Family, My 19-year-old grandson, Jacob Wright, asked me to thank the members of our church for the cards and prayers which went his way during a difficult surgery and resulting complications. He is now recov-

ering, having been released to swing a golf club (his favorite thing to do). Al and I thank you on his behalf. Ara Lawrence

Dear BUMC Family,

Thank you so much for the meal after the service. I am grateful for your kindness.

We will continue Wacky Wednesdays through the end of summer with events July 5, 12, 26 and August 2. I am looking for individuals or classes to host one evening. You can chose the theme and have a blast playing with kids. Please see me ASAP. Bethel UMC will host VBS – Galactic Starvey-ors – July 17-20, 6-8:30 every night with dinner provided. We need a few adult and teen volunteers to help out our hosts. Partnering with Bethel allows both churches to impact more kids for Christ, and we are excited to host both weekly events (Wacky Wednesday) and VBS this summer! Thanks to our partners at Bethel UMC! Register for kids and vol-unteers at:https://vbsmate.com/events/BethelUMC-Brandenburg/14495 Sunday School is a little different this summer and it sure is fun! We are doing a big, combined class in children’s area and doing games and activi-

ties that reinforce the lesson in children’s church. We have snacks for kids and space to burn off energy. It is a different way to learn when it is hard to focus during summer. Please give us a try! Come for either service, and Sunday School is the perfect comple-ment. Looking forward to a great middle of summer and beginning of school!

Over several Sundays in late May and early June, Brandenburg United Methodist Church was delighted to welcome new members to the church family and celebrate baptisms. On Sunday, May 28, Gary and Peggy Wigner transferred their membership, Gary from Bethany Christian Church and Peggy from the Church of the Nazarene, both in Anderson, Ind. Gary is retired from the U.S. Air Force and worked for the Department of Defense as an information systems security office. He enjoys woodworking, marks-manship, golf and college basketball and baseball. Peggy is retired from the U.S. Navy and is a civil-ian government employee, management analyst and human resources. She is an avid reader and gardener and VP of the Doe Valley Homemakers. She loves IU basketball and Colts football and just began playing golf. On Sunday, June 4, Brian and April Sankey joined by transfer from the Main Post Chapel on Fort Knox. Brian retired from the U.S. Army after 28 years and is now working as a deputy inspec-tor general for the recruiting command at Fort Knox. In his spare time he enjoys fishing, boating and golf. April has spent 30 years as a military wife, living in seven different states and spending two years in Italy. She has a bachelor’s degree in psychology and enjoys cooking, hiking, traveling and reading in her spare time. Brian and April have four grown children, Daniel, Zachary, Nathaniel, and Amanda. Also on Sunday, June 4, Judie Wilson trans-ferred her membership from Memorial UMC in Elizabethtown. Judie is the mother of three grown daughters (including April Sankey). She was mar-ried in 1965 and lived in 27 different houses in six different states. Now widowed and retired, she worked in a variety of jobs, including accountant, church secretary, customer service, a layout artist for bronze markers and a stained glass artist. She can no longer do stained glass, so she quilts and researches genealogy.

We celebrate the following baptisms:

Caitlyn Calarco was baptized on Sunday, June 11. Caitlyn, an ac-tive member of our youth group, is the daughter of Tom and Sharon Ca-larcvo.

Bryce McCarthy was baptized on Sunday, June 11. Bryce is the

infant daughter of Sean and Jenny McCarthy.

On Sunday, June 11, Sean and Jenny McCa-rthy joined our church by transfer of member-ship, Sean from Resurrection Church in Louis-ville, Jenny from Kendallville United Methodist Church in Kendallville, Ind. Jenny is a teacher at West Point Independent School. Sean is a teacher at Meade County High School. They have two daughters, Quinn, age 5, and Bryce, 7 months.

Our communion offering for July will go to sup-port the The Lighthouse Academy at Newburg – A Conference Mission Agency of the Kentucky An-nual Conference of United Methodist Church. The Lighthouse Academy provides a free after school program for elementary and middle school students from the Newburg area in Louisville. During the school year, they focus on homework completion, reading, and math tutoring. After homework and tutoring, children may participate in a variety of free enrichment programs. They also offer a sum-mer program, youth mentoring programs and a GED program. For more information about Lighthouse Acade-my at Newburg, visit their website at www.thelight-housecenter.org.

Can you believe it? Half the year will be over at the end of June! In the blink of an eye, summer will soon be over and we will be preparing for fall and winter. It’s not a bad time to stop and think about the first half of the year. Do you even remember your New Year’s resolutions? Have you accom-plished what you were hoping to accomplish this year? How has your walk with Jesus been this year? How faithful have you been in the support of your church family in terms of attendance and the giving of your time and financial resources? All important questions. We all need time to reflect on such things, or we will just blindly keep trudging along, letting life’s circumstances drive us rather than hearing and responding to God’s leading. It’s a good time to take a half-time break and give thanks for all of the blessings of the first half of the year. I’m particu-larly thankful for the way our congregation came out in support of the Love Thy Neighbor Campaign

and day of serving the community. Additionally we are thankful for the baptisms and new members we have received. In addition to looking back, it’s a great time to look ahead. I believe we will be receiving even more new members and hope to celebrate more bap-tisms very soon. Many exciting things lie ahead for our church, including a confirmation class which will be held after school is in session. A travel op-portunity for adults to experience time together in Pigeon Forge, a fall sermon series based on the Gos-pel of John, an exciting mission-focused Christmas planned… and something really special for 2018! Having just returned from the KY Annual Confer-ence that means I’ve been your pastor for one com-plete year! I’m looking forward to our second year together as it’s a great pleasure to serve alongside you and to be partners in the gospel together, mak-ing disciples for the transformation of the world. Let’s have a great second half of 2017. Here we go!

Kentucky Annual Conference Lay Delegate Report The Kentucky Annual Conference of United Method-ist Churches opened on Monday, June 12, with separate clergy and lay sessions that morning. The focus of the laity session was Ordinary People Doing Extraordinary Things – this year’s conference theme. One of the highlights of Annual Conference is the service of commissioning and ordination on Monday evening. Bishop Leonard Fairley, in his first year as our bishop, presided over the service. One person was com-missioned as deacon, nine as elder; one was ordained as deacon, and nine as elder. Worshipful work on Tuesday included reports on New Church Development, Strengthening the Black Church for the 21st Century, the Children’s Home, Equitable Compensation, and Thailand Methodist Mission. Bishop Fairley spoke on the importance of our camping minis-tries, the focus of this year’s Mission Offering. Warren Hopper, Executive Director of Camp and Retreat Minis-tries, also shared information about Camping & Retreat ministries. A mission offering of $79,050 was received during the missions celebration on Tuesday evening. Two of our former district superintendents – Paul Brunstetter and Becki Curry – were recognized dur-ing the retirement service. Gary Gibson was appointed Heartland District Superintendent. During the Church Beyond Afternoon of Learning and Service, 643 folks participated at over 19 service sites including assembling 2,614 UMCOR Health Kits. Thanks for those hand towels, church family!

Worshipful work on Wednesday included voting on five Constitutional amendments and affirming to send to the 2019 Special Session of General Conference the delegates elected for the 2016 General Conference. An update on the Commission on a Way Forward was given. The conference approved a $7.2 million 2018 budget which includes $183,000 to provide funding for Bishop Fairley to create new initiatives. Wesley Manor discussed its needs for expansion for contin-ued ministry and thanked Bishop Fairley for donating $10,000 to kick off fundraising for the project. Ap-pointments were read (it’s official – Pastor Jeff and Denise are staying!), communion was shared, and conference was dismissed. The next Kentucky Annual Conference will take place in Covington June 11-13, 2018. Thank you for the privilege of representing our church.

Sandra Stone Lay Delegate to Annual Conference

From the Finance Chair By the grace of God, and through the faithfulness of this congregation, we have come through a difficult sea-son, and our finances have made a remarkable recovery over the past several years, increasing from just over $5,000 in our operating account, to now over $146,000 in the same account. Our designated funds account has also grown from very little, to now almost $172,000, largely due to a $100,000 gift designated for future building improvements. This has allowed us to place $150,000 into a CD which is drawing maximum interest in a low interest rate environment. Our operating account is also drawing interest, further helping our financial situation. Giving remains strong, with $238,485 given through 6/9/2017, toward an annual budget of approximately $530,000. We are

striving to be good stewards of the gifts we have been blessed with, insuring that our money is “working” for us through interest bearing accounts. Several members of the congregation are taking advantage of our online giving program whereby a member can have their checking account automati-cally debited monthly or weekly. A credit or debit card option is also available. Mid-year giving statements will soon be available. Please review your statement, and contact the church office with any questions. Our finance team thanks everyone for their faithful-ness in helping us accomplish our mission, vision and values through faithful stewardship.
