Program Summary:Accomplishing the client’s multi-pronged mission of offering a holistic, coordinated healthcare experience, this facility allows patients to access multiple specialties within a single building.
Program Statement:A medical office building, robust 10-bed micro hospital, and state-of-the-art surgical center support primary care, urgent care, and technology-infused clinics organized in a series of flexibly designed pods. At the core of each pod, a nurses’ station and provider workspaces foster a team approach to patient care. Cores are surrounded by exam rooms, treatment rooms and clinic access from the linear lobby.
This creative, growth-minded architectural approach allows clinical spaces to expand seamlessly without requiring renovation to patient areas. Exit stairs and mechanical, electrical, elevator and IT systems were located thoughtfully along the building’s perimeter to further facilitate expansion. To adhere to the desired 24-month schedule, the project was designed for rapid deployment and installation using curtainwalls and massive precast concrete wall panels. HVAC and plumbing systems were fabricated off-site, then lifted into place on-site. The innovative approach expedited installation of multiple stories of piping and systems in, keeping the project within budget and schedule.
The facility balances cutting-edge technology with interior and exterior spaces that create a uniquely low-stress patient and staff experience. The natural light-filled space features soft, organic textures and materials that continue throughout the co-located clinical, surgical, laboratory, pharmacy and dining spaces. This user-informed clustering of services allows staff to collaborate and thrive, while providing comfort, safety and accessibility for all users.
A-05.02The client requested an architecturally distinctivebeacon that would take full advantage of its primelocation along Baton Rouge’s I-10 corridor.
The design teamconducted a thorough site analysis to capitalize on traffic flow, and preliminary massing was completed to ensure optimal visibility from the interstate as well as integration with the site and surroundings.
Additional studies further improved the angle of the building to capitalize on exposure to I-10 East and to optimize north-northeast exposure.
This responsive design allows the lobby and expansive glass curtain wall to absorb natural light year-round.
A-05.03Angling the building along its knuckle provided even more northern exposure and lets sunbeams dance across the interior of the lobby throughout the morning.
The design team thoughtfully extended the campus along the creek to align and connect with an existing bike/walking trail.
Improving the patient healthcare experience begins upon guests’ approach to the campus. An easy-to-navigate traffic circle slows the pace and invites patients to relax as they arrive.
This begins a series of subtle decompression experiences as patients park or utilize the valet, enjoy the landscape, appreciate the wood-finished covered drop-off area and enter the spacious lobby.
A-05.04All exam and treatment room glazing is translucent, allowing for privacy as well as natural light. Glazing was also placed at the ends of corridors and throughout clinical areas, reducing the need for artificial light and creating a more pleasing workplace.
Locating the elevators, exit stairs, and restrooms along the front exterior of the building created an additional angulation. That angulation is enhanced by the contrasting insulated metal panels and precast exterior finish, inspiring a sense of movement along the facade.
The sleek wood-look soffit softens the covered lobby entrance and compliments the surrounding landscaping. It also continues the series of decompression experiences designed to reduce patient anxiety.
A-05.05The capacity to deliver
comprehensive, responsive
and tailored patient care is
a direct result of its
intentional, future-looking
design.
The client requested a one-
stop-shop facility to support
holistic, team-based care.
In this out-of-the-box
structure, patients can
easily and efficiently
connect with and receive
care from multiple
providers and specialists
within a single visit,
removing a significant
source of frustration and
anxiety from the healthcare
experience.

A-05.07The current and long-term flexibility of the clinical spaces is accomplished through a series of pods. The core of each pod includes a nurses’ station, support areas and provider work areas as well as restrooms.
The close physical relationship between the nurses’ stations and provider work areas further facilitates a team approach to patient care.
Each pod core is then surrounded by exam rooms, treatment rooms and clinic access from the linear lobby. This arrangement will allow clinics to grow and expand seamlessly into adjacent pods without the need to renovate the perimeter patient areas.
A-05.08Designed to reference contemporary hospitality settings, the lobby inspires a sense of calm.
The wood-look soffit carries over from the covered drop-off area and into the lobby interior, amplifying the aesthetics while enhancing wayfinding at the entrances to the clinical spaces.
A-05.09Upon entering, patients and guests have the option to check in at easy-to-locate reception desks or the semi-private digital kiosks.
The adjacent O-Bar offers medical monitoring devices and iPads to help patients test a fleet of company-approved health and wellness apps.
The thoughtfully arranged second floor linear lobby and high-quality furnishings create intimate, comfortable seating areas clustered around the clinic entrances.
A-05.10Spacious and well-equipped physical therapy space offers a separate entrance and parking area for ease of access.
Large windows and a high clerestory provide natural light and views to the surrounding landscaping.
A-05.11The modern fourth floor infusion suite looks out onto the city through a large north-facing glazing.
The nurses station sits in the core of the clinic pod. The pod design and floor plan further allow for modularity and elasticity, ensuring each area can easily adapt to current and future patient and provider needs.
A-05.12The micro-hospital surgery department lobby is tucked into the side of the clinic, allowing an expanse of glass and natural light into the lobby.
Pre/post-surgery suites, PACU and beyond are located along bright, colorful, texture-filled corridors with multiple nurses’ stations.
Expansive, adaptive and technology-ready operating rooms can support multiple types of surgeries and procedures. Integrated video monitoring systems enhance the function of the operating rooms and allow monitoring throughout the healthcare system.
