Jesus taught his friends that “man shall not live by bread alone.” Every
day we are given the opportunity to test this proposition. The people I meet are generally on a search for happiness and meaning. I believe that we are each searching for an “original blessedness” in our lives, and Jesus tells us that it will take more than “bread” to build a bridge into that “original blessedness.”
The messages of Jesus are consistent: anything not planted in the ground of God’s Kingdom will probably not satisfy the deeper search for meaning in our lives. From the beginning of time, human beings have sought the meaning of life in every philosophy, life-style, or political agenda imaginable; and yet the search goes on. However, the Bible illuminates that it is through God’s grace that we are given a compass to find that “original blessedness.”
Every human being is created imago dei – in the image of God. One implication is that a meaningful relationship with our Maker is eminently possible. In that God is a source of generosity and great-heartedness, giving ourselves away brings us closer to the image of God that we bear. Giving part of our day to prayer and listening to God deepens this relationship. Giving part of our day to reading scripture
deepens this relationship. Giving our time and concern to help those who are in need in the name of God’s love deepens this relationship. And giving part of our day to financially sustaining the life of God’s kingdom deepens this relationship.
At St. Mark’s we depend upon the financial gifts of our members to sustain the physical structure of this Cathedral,
and sustain the lives of faith that are lived within it. We cannot do the work of the Body of Christ, the Church, without the financial gifts that we each give. Without the pledges that we make, we cannot walk together on bridges toward an “original blessedness” and deeper relationship with God.
Making a financial commitment to the life of the Church is one step among others that will deepen our life of faith. When we give financially to the work that God is doing in our lives and the
world, there is the potential to find a new portion of inner-peace; especially if we have harbored the notion that we might edit how much of our lives God desires from us. God’s desire is unedited; God desires all of us, all of our life, all of our efforts, all that we have to give.
The path to meaning is not in finding and having more things in our own name, but rather in giving and surrendering all

things in God’s name; meaning is found in discovering how to make a gift of ourselves to God and to one another. This is the imago – image of what God has done for us in the life of his son, the one we call Jesus Christ.
If we would like our future to be in God’s hands, I imagine that our wallets should prayerfully be in God’s hands as well.

St. Mark’s EYC NewsSchool is out! But EYC is not!
EYC will meet three Sundays this month. Also, on June 30th, EYC are invited to come out to the
worship and bonfire at All Saints Chapel in Stonewall to celebrate the
recent Confirmation class’s completion of their courses.
Our EYC special event this month will be a trip to the Boardwalk. Dinner will be bought by the church. Bring money for shopping, the arcade, and whatever else!
Looking ahead, we have two EYC trips coming up in the late summer and fall. Also 2019 VBS To Mars and Beyond is around the corner, Fr. Drew is in need of some high schoolers and middle schoolers who want to lead activities at the various VBS stations. The dates for VBS are July 8th-12th, 9-Noon.
Volunteers will be needed for some additional hours the week beforehand. This is a fun way of serving the church and getting service hours.

June 1890 – St. Mark’s rector the Rev. Dr. W.T.D Dalzell preaches a sermon on Luke 16:19-21, the famous “easier for a rich man to pass through the eye of a needle” passage. Dalzell proclaims that a man or woman who has enough to be content is “often richer and happier than the man who counts his wealth by millions,” and that our love to God is to be certified “by our love to man; and that our love to man is to be
proven chiefly by charity and kindness to the poor and the suffering. Not allowing them to lie at our gate but…extending to them such a measure of relief as comes within our ability.”
June 1959 – St. Mark’s Day School faculty member Irene Struve proposes instituting a Vocal Music Program in the school with a permanent music curriculum on a graduated basis. She states, “Children must learn to read
and sing music just as they learn to read and write.”
June 1978 – Rev. Thomas Comstock Seitz is appointed as headmaster of St. Mark’s Day School. Rev. Seitz is a graduate of Kenyon College and holds a Master of Divinity from Bexley Hall Seminary and a Master of Education from Western Carolina University. He served in parish ministry, school chaplaincy, and admissions direction prior to his appointment at St. Mark’s.
June 1984 – Rev. Laurence Packard launches a program Voyage for Life for high school age youth where they become acquainted with people in different jobs and positions, shadowing them in their work, in order for them to learn about life beyond high school and the realities of adult life. A Times article from June, 1984 describes the visit of several youth to observe the work of police and fire dispatchers.

Music & Worship
Music Camp 2019St. Mark’s Music Camp 2019 is scheduled for June 24 – 28, 2019 from 9am to noon. The Music Camp, which is in its eighth year, gives children ages 6-14 an opportunity to enjoy learning about music in a fun and supportive environment. Music Camp 2019 is offered free of charge, and in addition to learning the fundamentals of music theory and having fun with music related arts and crafts, the participants spend the week preparing the music that they will use to lead worship at St. Mark’s on Sunday, June 30. A gala reception for the camp participants will follow the 10:30 service in the Parish Hall. St. Mark’s Music Camp has proven to be an excellent recruitment tool for St. Mark’s Boys and Girls Choir.
