Helping the HomelessLOCAL PASTORS GET THE HOMELESS THE HELP THAT THEY NEEDWe welcome Pastors Steve and Regina Weller of Venice Foursquare Church who have partnered with LAPD Pacific Division to affect positive change for our homeless population in Westchester.

For many years, the couple, both pastors and LAPD chaplains, have worked hard to address the issue of the homeless along Ocean Front Walk in Venice.

But recently, the pair have helped connect with the chronically homeless population in Westchester as well. Over the past several months, the Wellers helped Susanna, who used to reside in front of Office Depot; and Karen, who lived on the bus bench by Kohl’s; find the resources they needed to get off the streets. Most recently, they found another homeless individual, Ivan, a

safe place to live. He now has a permanent home, a new job and real hope for a future.

For many in the homeless community, it just takes connecting with someone like the Wellers who know how to connect them with the resources they need. Whether it’s finding an open bed in a shelter for one night, getting the funds necessary to enter a drug or alcohol rehabilitation program or even getting transportation to another city where they can be supported by their friends and family, the Wellers come through. The couple has often dipped into their own savings and retirement accounts to help fund their mission.

Outside of their own money, the pastors’ work is funded strictly through donations. So, instead of giving money

or feeding the homeless, which does little more than perpetuate their life of poverty, please send a donation to the Wellers and let them affect a real, positive change in the lives of Westchester’s homeless. Donations should be sent to:

TENANT ANNIVERSARIES

Deloris Davis is in the happiness business, and one look around her shop at 8709 La Tijera Boulevard, and you can’t help but smile.

The former educator began making hats for herself, but it wasn’t long before friends, and even strangers, were offering to buy her hats right off her head.

“I started making them at home and it grew from that to this,” she said looking around her Westchester shop where she has been for the past 12 years. “Before this, I was in another Drollinger building for 17 years.”

DDA Hats caters to women of all ages and budgets, Davis said.

“We outfit the total female for any occasion,” she said, adding that the shop not only sells a variety of designer hats, but also sells clothes and accessories. “All of our clients are special to us, so if they’re looking for a particular item, we will find it for them. We love to shop the designer shows in New York and Las Vegas. We love to provide great service. And we love to make our clients happy.”

Life Here & There

Community.

Someone asked me this week “What does community mean to you,” and as I pondered the question it became clear. A sense of community is so important, but not always present, especially in a metropolis like Los Angeles.

In Missoula, Montana, you can feel the community, especially in the downtown. The businesses support each other and the community makes it a point to support small businesses. They have loyal and dedicated relationships that have lasted for years.

In Westchester, we have built relationships throughout our community. From our wonderful Chamber of Commerce to incredible organizations like Rotary, Airport Marina Counseling and Westchester Playa Village, the long list of dedicated groups that make our community special includes the Westchester Family YMCA, L.A. Fire Station No. 5, Neighborhood Council, Westchester Vitalization Corp., Venice Four Square Church, Empowertech, LAPD Pacific Division and the Westchester Town Center BID. Through each and every one of these organizations (and many more), we strive to not just work together but to build relationships

that span both our work and personal lives because we truly care about our community.

We spend as much time with

our business family as we do with our personal families. Souls are bound by a common thread, a belief system, a focus. We need to create a safe, clean and inviting sense of community in downtown Westchester. Part of this goal includes working to help our homeless find mental health services, housing and a path to living a whole life. I hope you can find it in your sense of community to support Pastor Weller and his mission to enhance the lives of those less fortunate, not by feeding them for a moment, but rather by putting them on a journey to wellness and success.

Joga Chiropractic Center Works to Fix “Tech Necks” and MoreFor Dr. Viktorija Joga, pictured center with her staff, chiropractic care is evolving every day. With each new iPhone release and every creative office environment that eschews traditional desks for couches and laptops comes what Dr. Joga calls “tech necks.”

“We see lots of young professionals with upper back problems, neck problems,” she said. “Everyone is doing bad ergonomics. We see a lot of repetitive motion injuries, too.”

Joga, who recently opened her Westchester office at 8929 S. Sepulveda Boulevard, Suite 100, also has a Santa Monica office where she and her team specialize in pre- and post-natal chiropractic care as well as elderly patients (she accepts all insurances).

Joga said her philosophy is to create a warm, inviting environment where her patients can receive customized chiropractic care, not a “cookie-cutter” response to their symptoms. Joga lives in Redondo Beach with her husband, Donatas, an architect, and her two children, Matas and Aria; but Joga said she always wanted to locate in Westchester.

“I would drive through Westchester on my way to Santa Monica, and I would always say, ‘This is were I want to be,’” she said. “I like the small-town feel, and I love Westchester.”

Check out Westchester’s newest restaurant – Noodle World Jr., which is now open on the east side of Sepulveda Boulevard, just south of Manchester Avenue. The restaurant features a variety of great dishes, including Pho and Ramen soups, Pad Thai, Chow Mein, Fried Rice, Salads and much, much more. Stop by today or check out the complete menu online at www.noodleworld.com.

Local residents and business people had the opportunity to meet with the folks who protect them every day – our local police officers at a Coffee With A Cop event at Starbucks Coffee in Westchester Village. Officers talked about how to stay safe and how to learn more about programs like Neighborhood Watch.

Drollinger Family Charitable Foundation Expands Yoga ProgramKaren Dial has a dream to offer yoga in every school in Westchester. Yoga enables young people to honor their bodies, quiet their minds and invigorate their spirits. Working with the Westchester Family YMCA and Manduka, a company that manufactures yoga mats, the Drollinger Family Charitable Foundation began a pilot program two years ago at Kentwood Avenue Elementary School to teach children in grades 2-5 about the benefits of yoga. That effort was tremendously successful, and this year, the program will grow to three additional local schools: Cowan Avenue Elementary School, WISH Charter School and Orville Wright Middle School. The program has enabled hundred of students to learn about yoga as part of their physical education classes. Manduka donated 30 mats for the students to use and the YMCA is providing the instructor. “It is growing like wildfire, and I am so excited to see a whole new generation of children embrace their own mental and physical health,” Dial said.
