Huntly PeregrineWildwatch
The Forestry Commission award winning HuntlyPeregrine Wildwatch Centre (HPWW) gives awonderful opportunity to view one of our iconic andspectacular birds of prey close up and in theirnatural habitat. The site is an old quarry and is theresult of a volcanic magma chamber and is an Siteof Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) in its own right.Scottish Natural Heritage are now designing inter-pretation highlighting the geology of the quarry. The centre has been open every season since
2002 and has grown in stature every year, regularlybeing mentioned in local and national press andalso appearances on national TV. It has won several prestigious awards for tourism and customer care, including the highly acclaimed Scottish ThistleAward twice and the Northern Lights award. The centre is open daily from March to
September, with all ability access and toilets. Theinterpretative centre and hide are staffed by knowl-edgeable and friendly Forestry Commissionwardens and volunteers, ensuring the visitors’ ex-perience is a memorable one. We have excellent CCTV coverage giving close
up viewing of the nest site, peregrines, quarry andall its inhabitants. The fantastic viewing facilitieswithin the quarry offer the visitor a rare insight intoour wonderful NorthEast wildlife. Binoculars and tel-escopes are provided for visitors to use. Feedingstations at the visitor centre and our top hide give
visitors the opportunity to observe up close the redsquirrels as well as a huge array of woodland birds, all literally inches away from the viewing windows. The birds have also done well over the years.
Sixteen young peregrines (eyasses) have success-fully fledged over the past 7 years and of theseeyasses, fifteen have been rung.HPWW has so much to offer and not just for the
serious bird watcher, it provides a great destinationfor a family outing and even a new experience forthose not having had the opportunity or knowledgeto enjoy our wonderful countryside. We would love to hear from all school and non
school groups wishing to visit the centre anddiscover what we can offer. Please contact us sowe can tailor your visit. We also have a number of places for junior
volunteer wardens aged 12-16, which has been avery successful venture with many young peoplereturning year on year.We are always looking to encourage and
involve more volunteers, both the young, and theyoung at heart. If interested please visit our websiteat www.forestry.gov.uk/huntlyperegrinesA series of events are run throughout the
season and information on these can be found atour website, through the Forestry Commissionevents leaflet or by contacting the Peregrine Centreon 01466 760790 (between March and September).www.forestry.gov.uk/scotland
Culbin is ideal for walking, with miles of paths and tracks to explore, winding among the pine covered dunes and coastline.
The Hill 99 Trail is an ideal walk for first-time visitors and takes about2-3 hours starting from the main car park at Wellhill. Along the way,you will find the dragonfly pond, a pretty pond where you canadmire brilliantly-coloured dragonflies during the summer.
Huntly Peregrine Wildwatch Centre Home to the fastestliving creatures on earth – a visit to the multi award winning
Huntly Peregrine Wildwatch is a day out to remember.
Come and see us at the Bin Quarry, just off the A96 near Huntly, where our friendly wardens will keep you informed and

While in Israel I had the opportunity tobathe in the Dead Sea. After changinginto my swimwear and while walkingdown to the water I met two young mendragging a screaming friend towards awater tap where they began to spray hiseyes with fresh water. It was obvious thatthe unfortunate had managed to getsome of the heavy saline sea water intohis eyes. I approached the Dead Seawith great caution and enjoyed thesensation of being unsinkable as Ifloated on its salty surface. Although thesalt nipped I did have a feeling of clean-liness and wellbeing.
While on a night time fishing trip with twofriends in the Brazilian Amazon we had aquarter of a mile walk from the jeep tothe river along a difficult path which we litwith an efficient torch. On arriving at theriver the bulb in the torch gave up andwe were left in complete darkness underthe tree canopy. We stumbled blindlyback to the jeep through the under-growth getting jagged and scratched bythe unsympathetic forest before arrivingchastened by our lack of preparation.
They say a picture is worth a thousandwords, that is why Jesus used picturewords such as salt, city and light. ‘Youare the salt of the earth. But if the saltloses its saltiness, how can it be madesalty again? It is no longer good foranything, except to be thrown out andtrampled by men. You are the light of theworld. A city on a hill cannot be hidden.Neither do people light a lamp and put itunder a bowl. Instead they put it on itsstand, and it gives light to everyone inthe house. In the same way, let your lightshine before men, that they may seeyour good deeds and praise your Fatherin heaven.’ Matthew 5:13-16. The saltfrom the Dead Sea is graded and muchof it has lost its saltiness and is used onpaths and pavements. Anyone who isgoing to be a Christian and follow Christmust be willing to stand out.
In fishing communities along the Moraycoast, salt and light have always beenimportant. Salt to preserve fish and light-houses to guide the boats into harbour.More recently with the record snowlevels, salt has enabled the roads toremain open. When Jesus spoke again
to the people, he said, ‘I am the light ofthe world. Whoever follows me will neverwalk in darkness, but will have the lightof life.’ John 8:12. His life, teaching andsacrifice are light that give understand-ing so that we can have a meaningful re-lationship with God. There is right andwrong, good and evil, light anddarkness. When we follow Jesus andtrust in Him, we get His help to choosethe right and refuse the wrong, do goodand shun evil and to walk in the light andavoid moral darkness. We become thesalt of the earth. Our lives are tastier andpreserved from things that would decay.
When through faith in Christ we becomethe salt of the earth then we have healingqualities - salt heals. As Christ forgivesand heals us we can forgive other andenjoy healing in our human relation-ships. Salt creates thirst and gives us athrust and desire for God and spiritualthings. For those who trust in Christ Hehelps to make life bright and tasty.

APRIL 2010
This month we are going all Chinese with thisgreat recipe and it’s really easy. The reason we havegone Chinese this month is that I am going to Beijingin May to run the Great Wall of China Marathon. Some say it is the hardest marathon in the world andsome say if there is one marathon you have to runbefore you die it would be the great wall.
The Great Wall Marathon will be a tough, beautiful and definitely extraordinary experience. The 5164 steps of the Great Wall will put me to thetest, The Great Wall Marathon is the ideal way tocombine an unusual running event with exploring oneof the world’s most astonishing sights.
We have hooked up with Tom Chamberlain fromMarys Meals Charity to raise money. I would like tosay a big thanks to DC (Doug Cowie) and the Sundaymorning club for helping me get the miles in!!
For the sauce4 tbsp chicken stock2 tbsp tomato ketchup1 tbsp soy sauce2 tbsp rice wine vinegar2 tbsp caster sugar
For the batter1 egg yolkfreshly ground black pepper1½ tbsp cornflour1 tbsp milk
Ingredients200g white rice4 tbsp vegetable oil250g chicken breast, diced75g carrots, cut into thin 'matchsticks'60g baby sweetcorn, sliced60g green beans, trimmed2 tbsp sliced spring onions
MethodCook the rice according to the instructions on
the packet then make the sauce by mixing togetherall the sauce ingredients in a bowl.
Beat together the batter ingredients in anotherbowl.
Heat two tablespoons of oil in a saucepan. Dipthe chicken in the batter, then fry it carefully. Removefrom the pan and set aside. Next, stir fry the carrots, baby corn and green beans in the remaining two ta-blespoons of oil for four minutes.
Add the sauce and boil for one minute. Then addthe chicken and spring onions and heat through.Spoon a helping of sweet and sour chicken on top ofa bed of rice. Serve.
Climbing the Great Wall of China might not takeyour breath away but the scenery most certainly will.
Happy Cooking!
