1) Janet Hoult- L S Lowry 1887 –“ Market Scene Northern Town” and Childe Hassam- “At the florist” My first choice is L S Lowry 1887 – 1976, Market Scene Northern Town 1976. Lowry, I think many of you will know, lived in the Salford area most of his life & didn't receive real recognition for his painting until after his death. It looks now like art snobbery of the time, because he lived in a working- class area, worked as a rent collector, and attended art schools only in the evenings when he'd finished work. So, for London art critics & gallery owners he wasn't considered a real artist. But all that has changed & I only found this painting because it was being advertised in a catalogue as a decorative mug!

My first choice is L S Lowry 1887 – 1976, Market Scene Northern Town 1976.Lowry, I think many of you will know, lived in the Salford area most of his life & didn't receive real recognition for his painting until after his death.

My second one isChilde Hassam 1859 - 1935  At the florist 1889As  2 Childe Hassam paintings were shown last time in weather, I'm just adding that he was one of the American artists, together with artists like Mary Cassatt, who were born in America but moved to Paris to live &  paint & were influenced by the impressionists & they played a huge part in introducing Impressionism to  American galleries & public, who weren't familiar with the style at the time.

2) Lindsay Litton- Pisarro-: “La Charcutiere” and “The Poultry Market at Gisors” This was the first topic where no paintings came immediately to mind and I’ve been fascinated by the variety in the depictions of markets I’ve come across whilst browsing. Eventually I discovered Pissarro’s market paintings and have submitted two: La Charcutiere and The Poultry Market at Gisors. Interestingly, Pissarro used the vertical or even square format for the paintings to emphasis the composition of the figures rather than a general panoramic view. I really like the softness of his palette and brush strokes and, although the clothing is clearly from another time, I find the poultry market scene in particular very evocative of those lovely French village squares.

3) Alison Wilson- Eugene Boudin Petite poisonnerie à Honfleur, vers 1854

Honfleur is one of my favourite places in France. This was painted a short distance from one of our favourite cafes to sit, have a drink and watch the world go by.

Eugene Boudin (1824-1898)

This study, one of four in pastels on blue-grey paper, was painted by Eugene Boudin. He is considered (by the art historians of Honfleur at least) to be a key Pre-Impressionist, and Monet certainly considered him so. By pure fluke, when we were there last September, I took the photo below of the two women reading the tourist information notice about the fish market which Boudin painted. It moved when the harbour was improved at the end of the 19th century. It is now a marina for pleasure boats, with the fish quay being closer to the river.

(just) be seen on the information board, behind the woman on the left. The upstairs windows of the grey building on the left are one noticeable difference.
